[Jariah]

Trory was grazing in the distance when Jariah recieved word from her lord of the kingdom's ruler. He was dead. This provided massive opportunity for her people, and for her lord... and she knew that they had to strike while the iron was hot. No doubt other plots were underway for the crown.

Although the acquisition of the crown wasn't something Jariah wanted personally, she knew that Malak would be eager to move in and collect his treasure. She sent the messenger who had given her the news to rally her troops. Whistling for her steed, she mounted and rushed to her lord's tent.

Malak sat in his tent, leaning back upon the multitude of silken pillows. Luxury was something hard earned... something he relished and enjoyed in his more recent years.

He wondered where his son was briefly; a thought which was eradicated by the sounds of a heavy-footed Equidyne. Considering the timing, and the the heaviness of the beast, Jariah must be the one approaching. Malak let out a half-hearted sigh. He wished his son was half as attentive as that girl was.

He poured himself a mug of steaming ky'lath while waiting for the girl to enter. The aroma was heavy, and the smell of it's rough spices wafted up with the tendrils of steam. He could buy the more refined ky'lath of the city, but nothing was quite as good as waking him up in the mornings (or a sleepless night like last night) as well as his rougher, homemade version.

Jariah dismounted Trory and let him trot off to do his own thing. They had a very fluid relationship... Jariah allowed him his freedom, and he got her where she needed to go. He was a fiercely loyal Equidyne, and she always admired his spunk.

But back to the matter at hand. Jariah stepped into Malak's tent and bowed briefly. "My lord. I came as quickly as I heard. A messenger is rallying my troops. We are at your command."

Malak smiled as Jariah's loyal words were spoken. He wondered briefly if that loyalty would follow when his son took over... Then he backtracked. Loyalty would only be given if his son would prove worthy.

"Excellent," Malak's voice was hearty. "Send an order to the cooks tent that they are to provide a full breakfast this morning while I address the troops on our near-future conquest."

Malak peered through the tent flaps. Dawn had not yet approached them, but the morning twilight was quickly fading. "Tell the cooks and the troops that everyone is to be assembled in 2 hours."

"Jariah!" Malak's son entered Jariah's tent without warning or announcement. He was probably the only person in the camp who was arogant enough to do that. He walked right next her to, drawing her attention. He liked attention. He liked being in command. Those were two things that could be said about him without faulter.

"My father has ordered you to go meet with the Fironez Ambassadors who are leaving the castle this morning. He wants to secure them as allies against the Monarchy." He paced around the room. He was not known for sitting still. "They have a newly announced princess with them... Father also said that if they try to resist or turn us away, he wants them all killed making the Monarchy look like they are to blame. If they won't align with us, then we will pit them against the Monarchy. He said to take Setara with you. I'll go brief her. Saddle Up, they are setting out at Dawn." and with that, he strode out.

Returning home from the meeting with the embassadors, Jariah stopped at Malak's tent first. Setara had already headed to her family tent. Jariah was almost sad to part ways with her... she enjoyed Setara's company. Stopping just outside the tent Jariah cleared her throat, "My lord," she announced, "I have returned with a message from the Fironez Ambassadors. May I enter?"

"Fironez ambassadors...?" Malak looked up from the scroll he was reading with a perplexed look. He sat the scroll down next to his barely touched meal and already cold cup of Ky'lath.

"Yes... enter right away and give me the details."

Jariah entered and bowed her head in respect. "Setera and I embarked to intercept the princess and the Fironez ambassadors, as per your orders." She realized that he probably hadn't ordered it at all, but there was plenty of time to establish that later. "They have not sided with the monarchy yet, and humbly request a meeting when they return to Xanolonia to discuss where their loyalties lie. If I may so, my lord, it seems very possible that we can align with them against the monarchy."

Malak tilted his head a bit a she mentioned 'his order,' but then hearing the outcome of the whole thing, he gave a whole-hearted laugh. Interesting of his son to do something useful for once.

"Very good. It'll be very interesting getting to meet these Fironez ambassadors." He gave a nod of approval, then pulled out a sheet of paper. After quickly scrawling out a message, he rolled it up, tied it off, and placed it on the table. "That message is to be handed to one of our messangers to be taken to Fironez immediately. We have to start adding honey to the pot now if we want to ensure that Fironez leans to us when the time comes."

"I have another message for my son." He leaned back comforably in his pillows. "Tell him good work. We wouldn't have this opportunity at all if not for his quick thinking. That is all, Jariah"

"Of course my lord, right away." She had decided not to mention the whole "kill Jariah" plot that worthless son had really been trying to do. Might as well give a father a sense of pride for a son who had never done anything worth being proud of. But she was definitely going to find that a** and give him a piece of her mind.

Taking the message, she left Malak's tent and shoved it off on the first messenger she saw. "Give this to the Fironez ambassadors. They should be back in Fironez shortly. Now make haste!" She didn't even wait for a reply, instead she walked off in search of Malak's son to give him HIS message...

Malak's son, Nikal, sat in his own luxurious tent. Being an only child, he'd been quite lavished on. Being Malak's only heir, he was very used to having anyone and everyone falling over their own feet to do him a favor... Everyone except Jariah. He sneered at the name before deposting a handful of grapes into his mouth. His father held that girl in just too high of a respect, and Nikal hated it. Then his maidservant came to him, telling him Jariah had arrived at his tent. This irritated him even more as he waved to have her brought in.

Jariah briskly walked into the tent and stopped a few feet away from Nikal. She didn't bow. "Your father wishes to praise you for your brilliant plan of intercepting the ambassadors." Scowling a little bit, she added, "Sorry I'm not dead. I'm sure that put a damper on your evening. But don't worry. I'd sooner die then call you my lord and serve you faithfully." Ever so tempted to spit in his grapes, Jariah forced herself to just turn around and leave.

"Letting you serve me would be like shaking a snake in a jar and releasing it when it's upset." Nikal let out a sneering smile at her. "Women will have no place as my generals."

With that he turned his attention away from her, dismissing her with a wave. A sharp glance to his servants told them that she was not welcome back into his tent without invitation.

From the private logs of Jariah

I've been seriously considering what I will do when it comes time for Nikal to take over rule of our people... and I wonder if living under the monarchy would truly be so distasteful. Or perhaps with the church. It would be a different story if I had any family here, but I don't... and Nikal obviously wants me dead. Certainly it wouldn't be who of me to stick around. I'll have to cross that bridge when I get there.
