never ever ever stick your chopsticks straight into your food when you're not using them. this is how certain religous practicioners offer food offerings to their deceased ancestors. Instead, rest the chopsticks horizontally across the bowl. If you're eating off a plate, use a chopstick rest to keep the tips off the table.
When serving yourself from a communal plate, use the thick end of the chopsticks to grab your food and then turn them around the right way to eat. This is mostly in polite company and not around your family.

In connection to the death thing, you're also not supposed to take something from someone else's chopstick with your own. That's because that's how they take out the bones from cremated ashes.
Also, in many Japanese hospitals, there's no room 4, because death can be said shi, and no one wants to be thinking about death if they're in the hospital. >.<
Nihon seems to be kinda a deathophobic place, ne?

[Love Shine] Kirei Yosei And they find it rude to lick your fingers after eating, but a complement to burp. Its also not considered impolite to slup when you are eating noodles. I read this a while back. Actually I know pretty much all that's been posted here. smile

More 'bout the number 4: You should never give four gifts, flowers, etc. to a Japanese person. It's like wishing the person to whom you give the gifts to die. But if you're foreign I'm sure it's not that serious, then your four gifts bought with love cause only bad luck to the receaver ninja

Hi no Hikari Sae Todoka Nai Kono Basho De. . . You guys may have noticed, but it's fashionable to have really thin or shaved eye-brows, especially on teenage boys. You can even buy little razors just for that. xD; It's socially exceptable for men to pee in public. The cell phones in Japan click really loud when you take a picture. Apparentlly, it's to prevent people from, erm, taking pictures up girls' skirts. xD Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojiru, is a combination of the words for gorilla and whale. Karate means "empty hand." Japan's national anthem, Kimi Ga Yo, is the oldest in the world. The word "arigato" came from the Portugese word "oborigado." Portugul once had a strong trade bond with Japan. The slang word "bushusuru" came about when George H.W Bush threw up on Japan's prime minister. It literally translates into "to do the Bush thing." Sora O Miageta.

HAAADO GEEEEEI!
@Miyanaki: o.o Really? I thought anata was an intimate term used for lovers or the sort.
...I did not know about the peeing thing. D8
In Japan, they do not eat rice by shoveling it into their mouths, but rather by using their chopsticks and picking up a bit at a time.
Along with the gifts thing, they also don't give clocks because it's supposed to mean that your time's up.
