They may not be able to get a Wii, due to a season rush. I wouldn't be surprised if they sold out on their shipment dates from now until Christmas. A DS would be much easier to get.
DS - 1
Wii looks like a lot of fun and innovative with some decent games out on the moment, including Wii Sports packaged with the system that could use internet.
Wii - 1
The DS has a wider selection of games.
DS - 2
Wii has Twilight Princess plus, as mentioned beforehand, Wii Sports packaged with the system.
Wii - 2
Really, it's up to you. I'd go with the Wii because it looks really fun.

I'd say DS. They have networking (or something like that) capability, more games, cheaper . . . availability . . . even Wal-Mart's out of Wii. Sigh.
