If your going to play death metal you have to get a 5 string.
OR, you could just tune a fifth lower on a four string.

A 5 string is good for lots of things. However, there are certain sounds that are better on a 4 string.

guys you don't seem to know a lot about bass if you think that any body who plays any form of metal with a bass and is a pro just slams E. The bassist for children of bodom is a mad man. Deth Klok's murderface gets his crazy fingers on in every song. ect. every one who plays metal is tallented if they are signed. most of the time the bass is playing the same riffs as the guitar is that's why you cant hear it. and five string is the way to go with metal because diversity is the key. maybe even a six.

I think it was already laid out that people recognize the good technique and theory put into a few good dm bands. Im not a fan of dm because I feel that the lines may seem technical, but if you break em down they are just playing simple scales and modifications of. Its all patterns. Not saying that the dexterity and ability isnt impressive, but the theory most of the time isnt that amazing... But this is all situational. Not all bands are this way, and there are a few impressive ones.

That makes it easyr to slap I think...So it can matter some times.

I have tried slapping on basses from 4-6 and its best on 4, can work fine on a 5, and for me is hard as hell on my 6. Slap tone is created by your strings and your pickups though. It really requires a specific setup to create that perfect sound.

You want wide spacings on a five string? Look for Brawley's. They're about 500 dollars, good thick tone, solid construction. And incredibly wide, flat necks. I have more space between the strings on my Brawley 5 than on my Yamaha 4. And you do not need a five string for diversity. Burton anyone?
