It was strange to think about, the way that emotions and feelings could so shift in such a short amount of time. Obviously that was part of the magic of...what had just happened; you're riding high one moment, and the next you're smacked in the face with a cold hard dose of reality. And apparently...Inali had just had the same reaction that he had, albeit on a slightly different vein.
As soon as he heard the word 'pregnant' Safi felt his heart take a dive. Pregnant? As in...foals? Good lord, that wouldn't prove anything! How could he be responsible for foals when he couldn't even handle himself? This hadn't worked out the way he had planned at all...
Listening to Inali's panicked words, Safi started to see faces; faces of the friends he'd left behind because of his own personal problems, the faces of those he'd met on his journey so far, Inali's own face; how it had looked when he first encountered her, how she had looked a few moments ago, and how she was looking at him now in fear...
In the back of his mind, that voice was back; and worse, it was laughing at him. ~I told you that you were going the wrong way...do you feel proud of what you've done? Do you feel...superior?~
No...no....no! Nothing was going the way it was supposed to...the world was spinning around him and giving way into nothing. All was black...black....
With that, Safi's eyes rolled slightly upward and he crashed down to the ground in a dead faint.

Shock was really the last emotion to flicker across Inali's face as Safi collapsed into a neat bundle, wings and legs a blue jumble. Oh dear... What was wrong? Was he ill? Despite the fact that Inali's life had suddenly turned so suddenly, drastically wrong, she was worried for him.
"Safi?" She nuzzled his prone form, trying to wake him up. "Please wake up. I'm sure I'm not pregnant Safi. Please wake up. We need to talk about this... Rationally. I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I shouldn't have had such an outburst.... I'm sorry!"
A sob choked the mare's voice as she spoke. She needed him to be awake... she couldn't deal with this on her own, and she knew deep in her heart that Safi was the only one to make it better. She would have to do the same to him- he was obviously feeling some similar emotions. Though the foals won't rest in his belly, thought Inali bitterly for a moment, then instantly feeling bad for it.
"Please Safi.." Her voice grew softer... Inali folded her red legs neatly to lie down next to Safi's side, still nuzzling him. "Please wake up." She closed her silver eyes, determined to sleep only for a moment...

~He was running; running as fast as his legs could move through a field of blackness. Occassionally, he would glance back over his shoulder as he ran, his golden eyes wide with fright as he struggled to put more space between himself and that from which he fled. As he ran, he flapped his wings in an attempt to get airborne, the knowledge that he could move faster through the air motivating him to even greater attempts.
But he couldn't rise up off the ground, no matter how hard he tried. And as he ran, he found himself starting to slow, to stumble...
And then suddenly his hooves were disapearing into the blackness beneath him; he was sinking, sinking...~
Gasping, Safi's head shot bolt upright and he was looking around wildly, eyes wide and frantic. He couldn't get away from the nightmares; no matter where he went or what he did, they would always follow him.
~You deserve it, you know; it's no more than you have coming to you, given what you're trying to do. You can't fight who you are...or what you are. Why do you keep running from what you know to be the truth?~
Cringing, Safi closed his eyes against the nagging voice, that voice that still chattered at him from the back of his mind where he couldn't ignore it. It wasn't true...he knew at least that much...but it had become as much a part of his life as the nightmares. It wasn't the truth he was running from, it was the...the...
Well, he had a good reason, whatever it was.
Taking a deep, calming breath, Safi glanced around the small thicket that he was lying in, then glanced at the still red form next to him. He could see from her relaxed, regular breathing that she was asleep...no doubt worn out by all that had just transpired. All that HE had just caused to transpire. Of all that he had ever done, this was perhaps the worst; yet another thing to weigh on his conscience.
At least it wasn't too late to make something out of this situation, at least for Inali's sake.
Carefully, cautiously, he edged himself away from her, rising to his feet with a lightness of bearing that had not yet deserted him. Closing his eyes briefly, he opened them to look down at the mare that had gone through so much and that he had brought through so much more. She definitely deserved something better than what he had done to her.
Leaning down, he gave her the lightest, most delicate of nuzzles, a single tear running down his cheek as he did so. Raising his head back up, he folded back his wings and turned towards the gap in the shrubs, gingerly walking over to it with the silence of a cat. Just before he stepped through it, he turned back one last time to the sleeping mare and whispered, "Good-bye, Inali..."
And with that...he was gone.
