I think the longer a game goes on the more excited you get to win. That being said, I hate the lock decks that just make you sit there until you deck yourself....
I love close games too, all the adrenaline pumping through your veins. Combo decks are really fun as well, but often the combo either wastes someone or loses badly...

Combo decks with one combo are cheap, yes it is a sign of skill, but they are cheap.
Seeing them can be fun though, but after a while they will just get boring because they play exactly the same way. And it suck for other people because they usually don't have a chance unless they do something cheapass too. The game becomes tedious.
And yet decks without combos (vanilla decks) are also boring because their is no real suprise to them, (unless a combo discovered unintentionally, which does happen. 3nodding )
My favorite decks are ones with a single strategy, but has several combos. And several means to an end. (i.e. deck with 15 mana loops. 3nodding )

metaljesse I think it depends on the combo deck, to be honest. I've played Yawgmoth's Bargain, Pros-Bloom, Trix, Kiki-Jiki/Intruder Alarm, High Tide, Worldgorger Dragon/Animate Dead, Replenish, etc. Decks that rely on skill, not just the random win, those are decks that are very very VERY good shows of skill. Now, some combo decks just don't show any skill whatsoever. tooth and nail, in my opinion, is a very good example of a combo that takes no skill to pilot. Ok, accelerate to 9 mana, Tooth and Nail, win. Not much to that deck other than laying lands and searching for the right land. I, personally, think that it's too easy to play. A combo deck, if it's worth it's salt, takes some freakin skill to pilot, and someone shouldn't be able to just randomly pick it up and play it. Wow... Someone I agree with. Any deck that is painfully easy to play/win with is just not a skill-based deck. If you really want to show skill, win with an obscure deck (Try a Fox deck, for example) or something of that sort. Combo decks can be shows of skill. I built a milling deck that actually takes skill to understand and play out well. 4 Urza's Mine 4 Urza's Power Plant 4 Urza's Tower 3 Sol Ring 2 Planar Portal 2 Mishra's Factory 4 Junk Diver 4 Blinkmoth Urn 4 Myr Retriever 4 Sunbeam Spellbomb 4 Ancient Den 2 Genesis Chamber 2 Blinkmoth Nexus 4 Grinding Station 4 Mycosynth Golem 4 Myr Servitor 1 Bringer of the White Dawn 4 Sensei's Divining Top Once you figure it out, there's an infinite combo in it. It actually took me a while to see it, but once I realized it could be done, the deck was easy to finish building. There are a couple cards that are just for fun, like the Bringer, but everything else just fits. With the Sol Rings in there, you can quite easily get out the golem quickly enough to get the combo off turn 5 or 6, but it rarely happens. You're often left with very little defense, barring the little creatures in the deck. Even with that being the case, the deck can still pull off a consistant stream of wins, if you know how it works, that is. Other decks, like Reanimator, just don't deserve to see play. Anything that can have a Platinum Angel AND and Akroma on turn 1 just aren't right, or fair. They take no skill to play, really. Just bury a platty, and anything else you want in the grave, and keep the reanimation flowing. Boring, and simpleminded.

Sign of skill to think up something original anyway. As I've said before, every deck has it's weakness, even ones that are seemingly invincible. Once you do find it, exploit it to every extent. 3nodding
