Concern colored Covet's eyes and she glanced up at Mecca at Marx's words. At his decision to let his friend sleep first before explaining, she smiled and looked back to Marx.
"Mecca is right. Rest easy tonight. The morning will be here soon enough," she smiled and rose from his side. With another glance to Mecca, she looked back to Marx. "Sleep well Marx," she smiled warmly at him, then reached out for her mandolin to return it to its case and the chest at the end of their bed.

Back in their bedroom Mecca slipped off his robe and hung it on the back of the door. There was one thing that Marx would have found him for and he didn't like it one bit.
Sighing he slipped back between and covers and lay down as yet another clap of thunder shook the house.

Waking up early the next morning, Covet dressed and slipped down the stairs to the kitchen. Lighting the fire in the hearth, she sang softly to herself as she began getting breakfast ready. Smiling as Meepo came out from his basket with a sleepy yawn, she scooped him up to his resting place on her shoulder. As she cooked, she found her mind wandering to the night before.

Mecca had never mentioned having a friend before. As a matter of fact, he had been quite adament that he had no use for them. But it had been more than obvious that the two knew each other well, and what on all of shutensa could have happened that would bring Marx all the way to their doorstep. Blinking a little, she realized she wasn't paying attention to her cooking and managed to flip the eggs over in time before they got too brown.

Mecca woke after Covet, dressed and made his way down to the warm kitchen. Outside it still rained, though the storm had passed.
"I don't like this." He confided as Scim came running to him, his little tail wagging excitedly. "Something isn't right."

Covet smiled as Mecca joined her, but frowned a little at her cooking at his words. Putting some of the food on plates, she stirred a pot of sweetened porridge, then glanced back up at him.
"Do you know what happened to him?" she asked softly, her green eyes flicking towards the stairs then back up to his.

"I do." He said slipping an arm around her and nipping her shoulder with his teeth. "How would you like to go for a walk after breakfast and I'll explain to you." He said softly, resting his chin on her shoulder. "I don't want to discuss it here."

Now her interest was beyond piqued. Why couldn't they talk about it now? Was he afraid of Marx overhearing them discuss it? Smiling a little at the n** to her shoulder, she leaned back into him and turned her head to press a quick kiss to his cheek.
"Okay," she agreed with a smile, though the anticipation was already killing her. "In that case, breakfast is ready. Do you think I should take some up to him or let him sleep?" she asked.

"I'll take it up and tell him we're going into town." He said picking up a bowl and handing it to her to spoon the porridge into.

After they had cleaned up their breakfast they took a walk along the cliff path towards the town. The sky remained dark and forboding and to avoid getting wet he suggested they go into the tea house.

"Sorry for all the secrecy." He said as he picked a table with soft leather chairs by a roaring fire. "I did not want to discuss it where he could hear."

"Do not apologize," she smiled and leaned forward on the table. "It's just... I find the whole thing strange. I did not think that you had any friends. How come you never told me about him before? And if he truly is your friend, why do you feel the need to keep secrets from him?" she asked, searching his steel blue eyes.

Mecca looked up at her and gave her a cold smirk.
"He's not my friend." He said holding her eyes. "Well, not any more." He shook his head and looked off into the dancing flames.

"We grew up together in Sagrees. Before I even discovered Crescent City. When I went back two years ago he told me he had found something. An object of great worth and power."

Mecca smirked and raised an eyebrow. She would know how attractive that would have sounded to him.
"I was to help him discover its secrets and sell it. That was before I discovered that it was stolen. He had stolen it and the owner was a powerful mage. I told him to return it. He refused and now must be paying for the concequences of his dishonesty."

Covet frowned a little and turned her eyes to the flames of the fire they sat beside, a small knot of nerves beginning to twist in her stomach.
"If... he is no longer your friend, why would he come to you? Why did he think you would help him?" she asked, looking back at him. "Do you think... that his coming here will be a danger to us?" she asked, searching his eyes.

"I don't know." Mecca said honestly as their drinks were brought over. "I can only imagine he wishes for me to bail him out of whatever trouble he has got himself into."

he frowned again and traced his finger over the design on the mug.
"If the owner of that onject is after him, he may well be a danger. To all of us."

Covet reached out and lifted her mug to take a sip of her tea. Returning it to the table, she cupped her hands around it as she thought about what Mecca was telling her.
"But we cannot turn him out. He won't be strong enough yet for a few days," she commented, then looked up at Mecca, trying to read his thoughts through his eyes.
"What are you thinking you will do?" she asked finally.

Mecca sighed and nodded.
"Find out what he wants for starters." Mecca said taking his mug and blowing lightly on the warm tea. "Then, when I know I will decide. I do not want our life put in danger."

he smiled at her and leaned back in his chair.
"Hopefully we can get him to give up his quest for power."

"Easier said than done I would imagine," she smirked a little and sipped her tea again. She was intrigued though. Here was a window into Mecca's past and it had so unexepectedly dropped right onto their doorstep in the middle of the night.

"Assuming no one knows where he would go, he should be safe long enough to regain his health," she mused, watching the flames dance in the fireplace again. "Though I suppose the sooner you speak with him the better. I do not wish for our home to be destroyed," she said, looking back at him.
