I would call Tool alternative. They're unlike the ordinary. They're different, no one else is like them.

I'd say they're generally alternative rock with metal and progressive influences. They're becoming more of a progressive band, though. Along the lines of YES, producing complex but accessible albums.

CrimsonThanatos Particle Wad I always thought of them as Art Metal. That's the best I've got at describing them. No, you know what I think? I think they shouldn't be labeled! Tool is Tool they are their own genre because they're that awesome! They're my favorite band ^^ Unfortunately, any fan of any band would say that... i dont think there has ever been a band like Tool the way the 4 of them come together so perfectly...I dont see it in other band groups.

I think Tool have always been really ahead of their time, they are incomparable to anyone, and therefore should be considered stand alone

I sincerely believe that Tool falls under the Progressive Rock category for a few reasons: 1) Their music is ever changing, yet recognizable. They try to branch out and experiment with new effects and sounds. 2) Another band that really had some great progressive quality was The Who. Their style reflects The Who because they pick scrape alot of their songs, power chords (Of course), and their songs are all like miniature stories. 3) Just because they drop D doesn't mean they are metal. I can drop D on a lot of songs, and still create a lighter sound. My opinion, for these reasons, is that Tool is Progressive Rock, much like NIN, but that is another story, another day. biggrin

Sacred_Guardian Honestly, I can't see them being grunge. I own all of their albums, none of which are grunge. But, they are progressive metal I would say. I agree with you. >.<

Well TOOL definatly isn't grunge. They're far too cleanand sophisticated for that. I'd have to say they're heavy *white* prog rock. For sure.

Genres are bullshit anyway. Tool is rock/metal. I wouldn't try to classify them further because they don't limit themselves by conforming to any one pattern. They have an incredibly unique style. Plenty of bands just do their own thing or pioneer a whole new style, but some say "we like black/death/heavy/nu/polka/green/smooth/faceblasting metal, so that's what we'll play." Genres...maybe they're not bullshit (disregard where I said they were), but they can limit the potential of good musicians if said musicians are too interested in any one, predefined, specific category.
