RyuKlN Clayra It would be cool if some japanese people liked me. What do japanese people think about Europeans? Depending what country your in.. If you can at least speak Japanese, they will NoT like you, but Love you heart well, no not necessarily. japanese peoples brains work like this: japanese+white face= does not compute!!!!!!!! you have to be fluent or somepeople will be like "what a wannabe"

Aiko_589 you have to be fluent or somepeople will be like "what a wannabe" Really? I've also heard that people are friendlier to foreigners who don't speak Japanese very well, and that when you get very good, people feel uncomfortable with you. (My professor said this.) Maybe this was the older generation? Even so, it seems like American guys who don't know any Japanese, or refuse to speak Japanese, get dates in Japan much easier than guys who do... Is it because they look like idiots that girls want to take advantage of? xd

My dream is to move to Japan to live and work there. However, seeing the comments here, I begin to wonder how silly a dream it is sad
Obviously I would be sure to learn Japanese before I went. I would do my best to be fluent. Even if I tried my hardest, would I have serious problems being a foreigner? Would it stop me getting jobs, making friends, etc.?

Its would stop you getting a job definately. and getting a place to live is even harder. my friend, a girl from india, was going to get this place in an apartment in Chiba. she looks really japanese so noone oculd tell she wasnt. but someone called the apartment and told them, and she couldnt live there because 50% of the vacant apartment building mysteriously filled up. she lives with me until she can find someplace. you shouldnt have a problem finding friends thats a different story.

Even a translating job or a teacher or something? Darn it, I may still be doomed :-S I wonder whether I should just give up . . . It's annoying because I'd try to be the best-behaved foreigner ever crying Also, I read somewhere that people with disabilities have a hard time as well. Is that true? I'm partially sighted (cannot see well) so would that just make things even worse?

What if you speak so so japanese just so you can communicate with others. Move yourself around town. Not every foreigner that speaks japanese is a wannabe. They just want to communicate.

There are thousands upon thousands of English teacher jobs, and many of them require absolutely no experience beyond just having gone to college. (Personally, I think it's ridiculous, considering the work so many other teachers have to put into their jobs.) There also might be translating jobs, but "fun" ones are going to be rare. You'll probably end up translating legal documents if you go that route. You can try to be a tour guide for tourists. That might be more fun. Also, I don't know if a disability like that would make much of a difference. Up until recently, people with mental disabilities or facial deformities wouldn't even leave their houses, but that seems to be changing recently, and people are becoming more accepting. If the problem is just that you don't see well, I doubt it will make much of a difference. Yes, it's frustrating when you try so hard, and you're still not accepted. I guess that's life.

But that's just a little tidbit.
