Btw, yesterday I went to this Jewish thing where Jewish girls my age are allowed to go and you learn about religion for an hour. It was kinda interesting, we discussed the philosophy of prayer.

That's quiet same to my Judicial Ethics class, but I talking about a subject that I'm studying broadly at high-school. However, I've never heard of such a thing...
Well, I live in Canada and it's much easier for Jewish kids to assimilate to goy culture and leave Judaism forever here (and it happens quite a lot crying ). So there are many programs, camps, and other things organized by Orthodox Jews to teach secular Jewish kids about Jewish religion and culture.

The Orthodox Jews in Israel should do the same, considering the fact that most of the people I know considers themselves "Atheists". eek

I don't think people would like that. I'd never send my child (if I had a child) to such a camp... I think most secular teenagers in Israel have secular parents who wouldn't want their kids to participate.

I do think some parents wouldn't mind if we knew a bit more about religion (that couldn't hurt in my view; I'm just quite scared of people brainwashing children). When I was in Canada I went with my aunt to the Easter mass to see what it's like. She asked me if it's similar to what I'm used to and I kind of admitted that that was the first religious service I've ever attended (she was all, "Oh, is that so? Don't you even pray in school?").

She talked to my dad about it and he said, "Well, maybe you SHOULD go to the synagogue across the street just once in your life". I said ok and haven't done that since. 0.0

I was kidding, since personally I would not like to be in such a camp as well. I think there should be an emphasis of Judicial Ethics, because at the bottom line that's what truly important.
But don't listen to me. My opinions are bribed. surprised

Including my brother's Bar-Mitzvah, I went only twice in my whole life to a synagogue.

xd I think I've done a bad job of explaining what those camps/programs/etc are all about.

Basically, they teach you a bit about religion but more in a 'this is just for you to know more about your own heritage' kind of way. The food they give you is always kosher and most programs finish earlier than usual Friday evenings but the Orthodox people are fully aware that most of the kids there are secular in the extreme (girls come to camp wearing shorts, etc) and other than not letting you eat non-kosher food under their supervision, they don't force any religion on you.

I actually went to a summer camp for Jewish girls for 2 summers in a row when I was 10 and 11. Most of what we did had nothing to do with religion; we played sports, tyed-dyed t-shirts, did arts & crafts, walked to the corner store to get slushies (paid for by the camp counsellor), and went to the swimming pool once a week (the entire program was 4 weeks long). Ocassionally (2-3 times per week I think, for about an hour each time) they would talk to us about religion but not in a forcing it on us kind of way. They told us about why Jewish people put mezuzot on their doors, about the Pesach story, about shabbat, etc.

Sounds like fun.

@Stav - I actually think that's true. Some people here, including a few religious people, need a lesson of Jewish ethics. confused Just the Ten Commandments will do (that's me in my 'erhh people are bastards' time of the day). XP

Are there any good Israeli movies that you guys can recommend?

I'm mostly into action/fantasy/sci-fi but I'll watch almost anything that doesn't have corny acting.

"Bourekas Films".
Third rate movies, yet they're much more sensible than must of the contemporary Israeli series. "Giv'at Halfom eina ona" (גבעת חלפון אינה עונה) is one of the best. eek

The only good Israeli movie I can think of right now is "Mivtza Savta". It's a comedy, and I know it wasn't in the list, but it's great.

I'm pretty sure we're not. 0.0 The whole movie was set somewhere down south and there aren't any mine fields over there. Plus, I don't remember such a scene at all. Maybe it was something else?
