The wind had kicked up from the time he entered the shopping center had left. The crowd was surprisingly light for the Christmas shopping crowd but that was more a blessing in disguise to the likes of him. Penn paused in his journey to the parking garage to lean against the heavy wind. His large mulberry wings tightening their spines lest a stray breeze snag at the membrane and knock him off balance. He’d spent the better part of an afternoon picking just the right things and he wasn’t about to let some smarmy wind come mess it up.
He squinted out across the conjoined parking garage and blew a deep sigh. Though he had made the effort not to over shop, he still had quite a few bags to tote. As he walked along the sidewalk to the crossing corner, he eyeballed a particularly flashy pedestrian that stepped past. Not right now, he figured thinking halfway to just cross where he was, it’d be faster. Those bags were heavy.
He eyed the weak flow of traffic before stepping down off the curb. Seemly from nowhere, a car had begun to draw near. Had he been paying more attention, he would have remarked how he never saw it approach until just now, steadily cruising, not seeming as if it wanted to stop before he did. Not being the type to test the natures of people, Penn stopped to let the car roll by. This would have been fine, if it hadn’t stopped before him.
It was black car, not to large in size but big enough to draw the proper kind of attention to itself. The windows were tinted a glossy black all around. This brought dismay if only cause it showed Penn how positively wind-swept he looked. Other than that, Penn had to admit he was slightly impressed. But only slightly, there was so much money floating around Gaia it was a wonder that people weren’t driving shining beauties such as this everyday.
However, that didn’t change the fact that the car was now barring his way and for no good reason.
When the corner of his mouth twitched in an effort to keep his pleasant expression the rear window rolled down and he could just make out the lower half of a face. It was male, possibly a businessman. From what Penn could see, the man was dressed in a neatly pressed white coat with no awkward accoutrements other than a simple name tag sort of card hanging from the lapel. A corporate pet, how cute, was it out for a walk he wondered.
“Mr. Pennanik, correct,” Said the person from within the car. He was forcing a polite smile the man continued on without waiting for confirmation. Of course it was him, who else could it have been? “Mr. Pennanik, I would like a word with you. I would like to put forth an interesting proposition.”
A sly smirk played at the Concept’s lips as he regarded the man in the car with as much tact as one could in that situation. “I think you may have the wrong guy.”
“Don’t think that’s possible.” The man said, reaching for a clipboard at his side, flipping through some pages, “Tall—around 6’ or so, orange in complexion, ring studded horns, white to burgundy hair, spaded tail.” He clapped the paper down, “The list goes on, but I’d like for you to come with me.”
This only gave the Concept a moment of pause. “Well I’m sorry, I’m not only taken; I’m not that kind of man.”
“Of course you’re not, sir. But then you’re not really more than a few crash thoughts in a young man’s mind.” The venomous smirk was genuine and Penn felt his cheeks burn lightly at that.
“Well now I’m definitely not interested.” He said with a mirthless laugh as he attempted to round the car.
“I should note you are also responsible for hundreds upon thousands of dollars in theft. Some of which is on your person as we speak; charges that could have you and your lover in a lot of trouble for years to come?” This part was spoken just loud enough to make the devil Concept swallow the lump in his throat, turn slowly on his heels and walk back to the door.
The man lean just enough to pop the catch and let it swing open. Putting his bags inside, Penn slinked into the leather lined cage and stared icily ahead.
“Very good, now for an important question...”
Penn narrowed his eyes.
“Do you like coffee?” With that, the car merged into traffic and vanished among the populous.

It was the next day from the fateful chat that now had the pair of Concepts waiting in the air conditioned lobby of the D-Corp main building. Why were they waiting? They were the only ones there!! Bah, whatever… Penn was busy looking about at the simple furnishings, anything to keep his mind from running a million miles an hour in wonder. And yet, he had some much more to be worried with at that moment. With timid interest he would occasionally look to his partner who had remained sullen the entire trip there up to that point. Lips pursed tightly, brow knitted in thought as he rubbed at his chin with a claw.
It wasn’t often that Gotts was upset at Penn, but he did try to ignore it as much as it ate at him to do so. He didn’t like seeing Gotts upset and he hated arguing. He would usually just let his lover vent then temporarily placate him with a cuddle or so. That wasn’t happening today.
“Children, Penn, you were only going out shopping! How did you manage??” Gotts finally burst the silence with a barely even tone that made the devil concept twitter nervously.
“So I picked up something a little… mmhhgh extra! Besides, think of this as try number two.” Penn joked lightly onto to find glare to meet him.
“Try number two?! Penn, how are we going to take care of two kids?! We barely get by on what you do….! It’s a wonder we get by at all!”
Taking Gotts’ hand into his own, Penn looked him in the eyes with his most sincere smile. “Gotts? Sweetheart. It’s okay.” He said gently and comfortingly, the thinner hand grasping his firmly, almost angrily.
“I’ll take care of everything. I’ll take care of us all. I’ll come up with something. I always do! I’ll be a good dad, and you can be a good mom.”
“I don’t kn—HEY!! I am NOT a woman!” Gotts stammered, his cheeks flushed with embarrassment as Penn laughed. He had his Gotts back finally.
It wasn’t too long before the men were guided to a sort of secondary waiting room. This one seemed a little tighter in space with two doors on either side of the room, a small table with some toys and a big glass wall. They were accompanied by another man in a white coat. This one seemed far more professional than the person from yesterday.
“As I explained to Mr. Penn earlier, the reason you two had been chosen to care for these two children in particular is because we’ve had children raised by everything from humans to other worldly beings alike but never by thoughts.”
“Watch it, doctor; keep that up I might start getting offended.” Penn joked. Maybe. It’d been the second time in less than a 24 hour period that they’d been mentioned as if less than upright intelligent beings. The doctor regarded him idly.
“I meant no offense, now if I may continue… These two boys require a type of care that may benefit them from your—“A rustle of paperwork and a sideward glance, “Talents. You seemed the most suited pair. D-Corp will handle all the smaller thing things: schooling, starter kit, what have you. It’s up to you to raise them well.”
“And what is this for?” Gotts cut in randomly looking away from the glass wall he’d been staring at only finding his own reflection glaring back.
“We like to see people happy.” Another reflection smiled back at him over a shoulder. It made his primary feathers tingle horridly.
“Now, if you two don’t have any questions, I’ll have them bring the children out to greet you. I warn you, the elder one’s a bit of a spitfire.” After waiting just long enough to be courteous, the doctor left the room and the couple to their thoughts.
“So, this is it… Kind of like waiting at the maternity ward but you’re here with me.”
“Now suppose this isn’t for what they told us it was for and they’re going to cage us for studying.” Gotts said eyeing the glass wall with much uncomfortable distain.
“Don’t worry so much, it’ll be okay, if they try, we’ll just slip away. We may be big but we’re still Concepts.” Penn reminded putting himself into a seat.
“Right and my thinker is miles away and yours…” Gotts started then sighed reluctantly when he saw the smile fade from Penn’s face.
“I know, but I wanted to make it up to you for …you know, shooting our first kids into the stratosphere.” Penn muttered slightly fiddling with the tip of his tail. Gotts sighed and walked over to him to rest his hands on the devil’s shoulders.
He felt like a heel because for once Penn had tried to genuinely do something for him. This was the most outward (and publicly acceptable) form of affection that Penn ever had shown.
“Well, I do look cuter in an apron than you do.” Gotts sighed with a smirk.
“That’s the spirit, darling!”

“Momee, Dahdee! Momee, Dahdee!” Was the cheerful mantra of the little boy that skipped down the hallway ahead of his older brother and their temporary caretaker. His voice held a deep German accent. Bright yellow eyes glimmering happily as he skipped. Stopping now and then to look over his shoulder to make sure his brother was still there.
He was, but he didn’t share in his brother’s enthusiasm. For a long time they’d known they’d be adopted out and that meant leaving what they were used to. And that wasn’t something the blonde jaguar boy was looking forward to. What if their parents didn’t like them? What if they didn’t like their parents?
There were too many what ifs and not a lot of answers. With a yowl the boy was near yanked off his feet when his brother doubled back and grabbed his wrist while he was lost in thought.
“Momee and Dahdee, Bruder!” The darker complexioned boy sang trying to get his twin to join in. The blond however, wasn’t as interested in this banter as he was to pry his arm free lest it be yanked right off.
“Lass den Quatsch!” He growled trying to hold his twin still to better get his hand free. He only succeeded in getting jostled about in a crazy dance. Their temporary babysitter chuckled at the boys’ antics.
“Boyz, please behave. Und joo must use English, mein leetle vons. Be polite.” She said gently but firmly. Her accent was far stronger than either of the boys’. The darker twin nodded to her with another toothy grin, even at that age his fangs were very pronounced giving his face a more feral appearance. He barely noticed when his brother slipped free of his tight grasp and placed himself between him and the woman.
“Yis, ma’am,” He sang as they approached to door where their potential parents stood. When the door opened, they saw a man with red skin waiting inside the small room seemingly dressed in bizarre costume.
The stranger beamed brightly at them and rose from his chair. The blond boy couldn’t help but take a step back at the sight of the man’s large wings. His brother on the other hand cheered and burst into the room running up to the strange man. His curiosity and eagerness getting the best of him as he let himself be lifted up.
“Are joo our nyew Dahd?” He said leaning up as far as he could to grasp both of Penn’s horns in pudgy little hands, inspecting to see if they were just for show or really attached.
“Indeed I am!” Penn snickered and took the opportunity to give the boy a raspberry on his tummy.
Unfortunately from a distance, it looked like he was going to attack the boy. The blond reacted to his twin’s high peels of laughter by bolting into the room fully intent on sinking his blunt little claws in an unprotected thigh when only to catch sight of Gotts standing just aside the door. The boy’s eyes were as wide as dinner plates as he did a little wobbling half skitter on all fours, back arched as high as he could get it as he sputtered a hiss. His human features not allowing the full threat to be issued but just enough of it.
Gotts crinkled his nose at the boy with a dishearten sigh. “He gets hugs and I get hisses? That’s pleasant.” Getting his wits about him, the blond jaguar boy scampered back behind his caretaker peeking between the two in wide eyed confusion.
“Sorry about hees... behaviour.” She gave Gotts a gentle smile as she stepped from in front of her young charge and nudged him toward the purple skinned man. “He is jist a tad shy foor nyow.” The boy felt his cheeks grow hot with embarrassment a he brought himself to his full height and stepped over to Gotts. He was the big brother here; he had to show he was no push over.
His twin and the orange skinned man barely paid attention to the ruckus, giving them all a cursory glance before the boy in Penn’s arms peeked around curiously.
At a loss of just what was expected of him, he remained where he stood; the young boy getting closer but still remaining at a cautious distance from him. The pair looking at each other in an appraising manner for a long bout of uncomfortable silence before Gotts cleared his throat.
“Sorry about startling you earlier; I didn’t mean to.”
“Is okay.” The boy said shuffling his bare feet against the tile floor. He looked to his brother and the other man the back at the man before him. “So…are joo…” The boy trailed off slightly just barely making eye contact.
“Am I your new dad? Yes, seems so.” Gotts said rubbing at the back of his neck. This made the boy look to the labtec fearfully.
No one had said that they’d be split up; he was not going to let that happen! He didn’t want to be separated from his brother. Gotts caught the anger simmering in those coral colored eyes and pointed toward Penn.
“He is too.” He said before the ensuing tantrum that was coming. The anger dispersed from the boy’s features into confusion as he looked to the other man.
At that moment, the darker toned twin, when his curiosity couldn’t be held any longer leaned back to look at Penn innocently.
“Vere is Momee?”
With the largest grin, Penn snickered and pointed at Gotts.
Both boys looked from one another to their designated parent in confusion; the dark twin being the first to break the tense moment as he reached both arm arms at Gotts and cheered happily much to his brother and Gotts’ exasperation.
“Momee!”

"The time has come," the Walrus said, "To talk of many things: Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--Of cabbages--and kings--And why the sea is boiling hot--And whether pigs have wings." Came the lilting voice of the devil concept as he trimmed a few errant branches from his small Hinoki Cypress. He recited the poem from memory to the little plant as well as the two young boys working studiously on their worksheets.
It had been a good few days since Gotts and Penn were first found by the strange corporation to care for the pair of genetically altered children. Like the two concepts, the boys were an oddity of nature. Both creatures falling under the same categorization of bumblebee flight: shouldn't be possible. However, this was Gaia; it was made of the impossible.
"But wait a bit," the Oysters cried, "Before we have our chat; or some of us are out of breath, and all of us are fat!" "No hurry!" said the Carpenter. They thanked him much for that.” He said dramatically along with voices for each person in the rhyme. The tiny smiles creeping up along their faces made him smirk in turn. “Care to take it from there?” He said to the pair of boys. Both of which looked from him to each other silently.
"A...loaf of bread," ze Walrus said, "Is what ve chiefly need: Pepper und vinegar besides are very good indeed--Now if you're ready, Oysters dear, ve can begin to feed?" Aus piped up first carefully sounding out each sentence as he kept an eye on Penn’s expression. “Very good, Auslier, you’ve learned that pretty quickly.” Penn said carefully snipping at some errant branches. The boy swelled slightly, a proud smirk on his face as he went back to coloring. "But not on us!" za Oysters cried, Turning a little blue." After zuch kindness, that would be a dismal thing to do!" Sacha said dramatically, it was all a game to the young boy; like hot potato. "The night is fine," the Walrus said. "Do you admire the view?” Penn continued in a comedic gruff tone. Though it was part of the verse, he was truly asking the boys as he turned the bonsai to face them in the proper way. Reciting the poem was something he’d always done since it was a proven fact plants grow better when talked to; but it’d had proved to be a good bonding activity for him and the boys. He enjoyed being talked to at that age. And he’d read in some fancy woman’s literature that that’s what the young’uns were all about in this time of their lives. Sacha closed an eye and held his thumb up level with the tree, he twisted it this way and that before planting a loud kiss on the tips of his fingers. “Goot job, papa! It still looks just like a leetle tree!” At this, Aus glared at his brother in annoyance. He was so silly sometimes; almost too much. Penn laughed sheepishly and admired his handiwork. When it came down to it, there –was- only so much you could do with a bonsai. It was then his lover had walked in, a shopping bag in his arms as he stopped to glance over Penn’s shoulders. “Telling more of your bad jokes? I can hear you from the porch.” He chuckled coiling his tail momentarily about the devil concept’s affectionately. He walked around the table to kiss both children on the top of their heads and headed to the kitchen.
“Not just talking, we were reciting from memory!” Penn said proudly turning his cypress toward himself to finish up.
“Oh? What part of whatever were you reciting?” Gotts asked moving to put the groceries away.
"It was so kind of you to come! And you are very nice!" The Carpenter said nothing but "Cut us another slice: I wish you were not quite so deaf-- I've had to ask you twice!" Penn opted to continue as his answer to his life mate. This caused Gotts to screw his face up slightly sidling the milk into the fridge door. “Oh honestly, Penn… must you?” He groaned looking slightly green. The devil concept got the hint with a soft chuckle and a sigh. “Did you get the swatches?”
“I did, and you’ll never believe what a hassle it was to do either. Is it really that hard to tell the difference between cream, eggshell and beige? “Gotts sighed digging the strips of paper from a bag and handing them over.
“How are you guys doing on your worksheets?”
“Jus finished, mama.” Aus said, setting down his color pencil.
“Me, too!” Sacha chimed holding up his last sheet.
“Letters and numbers?” Gotts said raising a brow at them then looking to Penn. It was his job to make sure his mate did his, after all. Both boys wilted slightly with guilty expressions. Penn conveniently wasn’t looking up.
“No numbers jist yet… Papa said ve could do them after dinner vit you.” Aus confessed for the lot. “He said ve could watch History channel after we did letters ‘til dinner.”
Gotts frowned at Penn, who under the mental daggers being shot his way set his bonsai on its respective shelf and stood up.
“I’ll cook?” He offered, both he and Sacha gave the angel Concept big round puppy eyes until he caved.
“JUST until dinner.” Gotts sighed. No sooner had the words left his mouth, the twins thundered off to their room to turn on their television.

The year had passed quickly and the twins’ second Christmas had come and gone in their new home. It took some time but they finally had settled comfortably into their new home with their fathers.
Since their initial visit, Gotts made it a well known fact that he refused to return to the D-Corp facility unless he absolutely had to. Penn suggested they send a Christmas card to the twin's former caretaker, however. Without her, their boys could have been little ruffians when they were transported into the Concepts' care. Whether she received it or not they didn't know, but the thought was nice.
The discovery that another D-corp family lived in the neighborhood was a welcome surprise as also. The boys gained a friend and their parents gained a sympathetic ear. Or rather, they may when they actually get to talk with Canti’s guardian. Gotts thought it’d be a great way to break the ice by inviting them over or taking them a pie. Either way, it made the world seem a little more comfortable for them all.

01/02/08 Dear journal,
To be honest, you’re not my journal at all. You used to belong to my thinker. The former Takahashi Kazuhiro but better known to the rest of us as just ‘Oni’. It’s been two years since his passing and a lot has happened. We closed down the shop and it seems we all became parents!
Even me. That’s right, seems fate has deemed me worthy of being a parent. Me, of all people, now I’m a father, it’s almost too good to be true. It’s strange how having a family can change you. I feel a little bit older, a little bit wiser. But more complete. I guess this is what I was missing.
I know it’s crazy to believe but after our initial accident, I don’t think Gotts is up for a second try at creating spawn the quote unquote natural way. To tell the truth, I don’t think I am ready either. Hell, I don’t even know if I’m ready to raise these two lil angels I was blessed with.
Love em both, they’re just too cute to be mixed with wild animal genes. You look at those darling lil faces and you almost forget they’re checking you out to see if you’re good to eat or just to climb. But they’re still kids, you know?
They’re fast learners in an almost scary way. I started to read them Through The Looking Glass. Chapter A night, you know. Nothing fancy. It wasn’t long before they wanted to help me read it. They seem to have a fascination with the Walrus and the Carpenter poem. Had me read it several times over til they both memorized it. It makes Gotts uneasy. Can’t blame him, it is a poem about two guys eating lil clam-children.
Must be the predatory nature.
Little Auslier. He seems to be shy for a boy his age. I hope nothing has happened to him to make him react that way. I wonder if it’s because of his genetics. Normally I wouldn’t blame such things, but the paperwork we brought home seems to suggest otherwise. Either way, I’ll continue to work with him and hopefully get him out of his shell. He seems to realize that Gotts and I love him and his brother, that’s a good sign at least. All in all he’s a good child. Well behaved just very quiet.
Sascha on the other hand is quite a handful. He’s all over the house and thankfully it’s all in good nature. I see him try and coax his brother into play, which works some of the time. We’ve already gone through three boxes of bandages for the times when Aus isn’t so playful. Sascha doesn’t seem to take it personally, which is good. I admit shamefully to buying him a battery operated mouse to chase when he’s knocked the wind out of both our sails. It does the trick though.
Gotts seems to be getting long a lot better as well. He doesn’t even cringe when the kids call him ‘Mom’ anymore! He does when I do however. Hmph. Anyway, I’ve drug this out as long as possible but it was good venting space. -Pennanik

An Unexpected Call
It seems D-Corp has contacted you and told you to bring your child in for a check up immediately. Very little information was given to you over the phone other than the fact that it was critical that they be brought in as soon as possible.
Once at D-Corp you are directed to Dr. Acklin's office. He's running about writing things down and clicking away at some keyboards. Once he notices you he seats you and your child down immediately to take a blood sample.
The sample is run right away in the back of the office the doctors face in the computer screen the whole while. After almost an hour of being told to wait patiently the test results are finally done and you are told you are free to leave. No information is given as to why you were so urgently called in however you were assured that your child is perfectly healthy and that there is no reason for alarm.

Unexpected Call:
The weather was starting to take a turn for the cold again. The leaves on the trees just now starting to change. It was late afternoon and the boys were playing out in the yard as they usually were this time of day and the house was peaceful. Their parents on the other hand were busy with the typical rigors of family life, cleaning up after two rambunctious children. It had slowly become routine that to follow the same patterns were becoming second nature.
The loud ringing of the phone however startled them both. Getting a call in their household was a rare event, getting one from the offices of Dcorp was an entirely different matter. Usually they were left to their own devices with the occasional bit of paperwork mailed to them. Gotts balanced the phone on his shoulder as he rinsed the soap from the dish he had finished cleaning.
"Hello? Yes this is one of them. May I ask wh--..I see.. What's this fo-- Now?? You're sure we can not reshed--" His brow furrowing mildly as he returned short answers to the curt voice on the other end leaving Penn to stare at him curiously from his place at the dining table.
"Right. Yes. No. That's fine. Mm-hmm. Mm-hm. Goodbye." He hung up the phone, maybe a little sharper than he'd like but he did.
Penn was the first to break the uncomfortable silence. "...Let me guess, we better go catch it?" The look he was shot gave him a mild pause. "What happened?" All playfulness dropping from his tone.
"We have to take the boys in for a check up. Right now." He screwed up his face a tad and turned back around to take his frustration out on the egg bits stuck to the skillet.
"Now? It's almost five." Penn chuffed incredulously looking to his watch to confirm it. "What could they possibly want to do a check up for at this hour!?"
Gotts shook his head, tail flickering angrily as he scrubbed. "I have no idea, this is ridiculous! I mean I'd like to hope we are informed if something were wrong... I refuse to take part in this little experiment game of theirs! They're children, not...not..." Gotts faltered when he felt the arm wrap about his waist and draw him into a hug.
"I know, I know." Penn murmured comfortingly. "Look, I'll go. You stay here and cool off a bit, hm? I'm sure it's nothing." At this, Gotts sighed. Partially relieved to be free from going back and consideration of his partner. He nodded faintly but remained quiet as Penn went to gather the boys.

The drive to the facility wasn't too exciting. The boys were being fairly quiet as they watched the scenery go by from their booster seats. Auslier seeming less interested than his brother. The pale furred child leaning his head against the door half heartedly reading the signs on the buildings as they passed them by.
"Vhere are ve goink, papa?" Sascha asked bouncing in his seat a bit. He kicked his legs looking about the cab of the car. "This doesn't look like the vey to za store."
"We have to make a trip back to Dcorp." Penn answered honestly. He wasn't much for sugar coating things. Besides what harm could it do. At this Auslier perked up. Looking around in mile panic.
"Vhat.. V-vhy..?" He mewed as his ears docked back slightly. They weren't being taken back were they?? They didn't do anything wrong. Did he not want them after all?? "I don't vant to go back.."
Penn blinked and looked back for half a second. "T.. take you back what? No, honey. You have to get a check up. That's all." He reached back to take the boy's hand. He grasped at the older man's fingers in both hands. Not really convinced but happy to hear otherwise. Penn gave the boy's hands a gentle squeeze before taking his hand back as he pulled into a parking spot.
Getting the two boys from their seats, they all entered the building and were immediately directed to where they needed to be. The man who awaited them seemed to have about a million things going at once. From there everything else was a flurry of motion and it seemed to be all over. The man assured the boys father that everything should be in order and sent them on their way.
