Wasn't she the last Ancient? Being such an important person would probably make her the Lead if Cloud wasn't

i think it would be tifa since she's there most of the time during the whole game, it would be cool if zack more in it too though. 4laugh

Considering How closely everything ties in with Cloud.... Tifa more than likely. She was more closely tied in with all the events the Cloud was involved in. The thing is the story revolves around Cloud and what in the end pushed the story out of Midgar was Cloud going to save Aeris and finding that Sephiroth was still around.
If Tifa were the main character and she didn't get crushed by the plate the story would have continued as Tifa being a fugitive from Midgar. Same goes for Barret.
Also, without Cloud, Aeris would either still be hiding in the slums or imprisoned with Red XIII in ShinRa.
Cid would be in Rocket Town sulking over his lost dream. Vincent would be sleeping in ShinRa manor. Yuffie thieving in woods (no offense to Vincent or Yuffie fans but the were OPTIONAL characters). And Reeve's would only have Cait Sith for maybe tracking the fugitives if at all. And unless Zack were brought back to life I doubt it.
Simply do to her connection with Cloud and her hate for Sephiroth would Tifa be the most suitable. And she would have to discover Sephiroth through an alternate means and and more than likely... Aeris and Red XIII would be completely excluded from the story.

They Probably would have kept Zack alive and made him the man character (like in the upcoming PSP release) or it would be Vincent like in D.o.C.
