I think that sometimes, a character needs to die, no matter how big a part they have. But I also think that just killing off a beloved character for no good reason is a bit sadistic.

I don't mind some main characters. accualy. i sometimes pray that the author would kill of this certain character. that cheats death, is to save the world. Destroy it. save it all over again, and so on. while getting laid, supported, cocky, and everything else that is bad under the book. i HATE the character. and he deserves to die. yet he doesn't and it pisses me off. then he goes out and kills one of my favorite characters in a way that ,makes you expect that she will appear out of no where. like step in and ask. "so... what's new?". i usualy get ticked off is some main characters die. i cry sometimes when some die, and other times i laugh and say "serves him right, being the a** he is!!" twisted

You know, really, I think they just do that because they need to add... mm... something. Spice, I guess, to a book. Or it's just convenient to the time. It's funny, because I HATE it when my favorite character dies, but when I write a book (or really, a story) I think that it adds a heartbreaking flare that I personally like. Huh.

It really depends on how the death affects the plot. A death can completely ruin a story or make the plot increasingly realistic to its reader. Then again, it really depends on the individual.

Dr.Speth In alot of books I read I have noticed that the author will just kill off some of the main characters and it really irks me. Do you have the same feelings or are you ok with the loss? It makes me mad. I was reading a terry Brooks novel, and a main character died. (I forgot his name, so I feel bad.) But of course, as in all fantasy novels, he died while trying to save the masses.

I haven't read many books where a main character died, but one was "the elfstones of Shannara" it really surprised me and afterwards I felt kinda sad... I didn't expect that and thought " this is a surprising ending, good but a bit sad" sweatdrop

It depends, sometimes, I find it extremely hilarious, other times I find it extremely stupid. I don't know why sometimes I like it and sometimes I don't, I guess that I'm just weird like that.

it's love/hate situation. i love the character and hate that they have to die. i cry whenever i read it...but sometimes i must agree, it's good for the book...even if i wanted to hunt down the author and shoot em'.

Personally I feel that sometimes it's impossible for the character not to die. The main character dies to further the plot, or it may just be the only way to fully end the story. I don't particularly like it, but death is a natural part of life, even for a character.

i cry when a main character dies unless someone spoils it for me. but sometimes its better when the character dies. it makes the book better. i mean sometimes happy endings just get boring.

Its almost like a favorite pet dies when a man character dies for me. I could be sobbing. I get very attached to book characters. sad
But I do agree that happy endings get boring. I always like a hapy ending though.

When the main character dies for some just cause or something, like saving everyone it doesn't bug me as much for some strange reason. But when the main character dies of some disease, or something they can't stop, its bugs me terribly! I have no idea why. And what's interesting is A LOT of people are doing it now.
