Though Rin-ji's reaction time wasn't quite as good, he had decided to lash out in return before he hit the ground... at least as soon as he realzed what was going on. Her words just convinced him more. There was no way he would be made to look weak by a girl, so once he regained his breath, rather than speak he made a strong thrust of his arm upwards towards his target. Flames materialized and nipped at her knees and the hem of her tunic as he spun around into a sitting position. His movements were a little rough around the edges, but having real lessons was paying off. For instance, he hadn't caught anything on fire. That was a step in the right direction.
"I'm not some nobody underfoot you can step on anymore, you know," he sniffed, still clinging to his wounded pride as he ungracefully gathered his scattered goods into his basket again. "You might not believe it, but I do have a very important teacher. You might have to talk nice to me."

Li Ren flinched away instinctively as the flames appeared, but she wasn't fast enough and small singes were left behind as evidence of the argument. "What do you think you're doing," she huffed in outrage as she looked down at her clothes. Unlike the dress from the first time they had met, she was actually fond of this outfit. What an insolent servant.
She was about to take another swing at him when she stopped herself, narrowing her eyes, "No, I don't believe it. Who would be stupid enough to take you in?"

Rin-ji took his time replying, making sure he was standing first. He checked his basket, confirming that he hadn't lost anything, and finally faced Li Ren with the faintest self-satisfied smile.
"My teacher is Razuten of the Fire Nation military," and as he spoke the smile grew more genuine. It was still one of those fresh happy events that tickled him to think about, and he barely managed not to grin when he said it. Perhaps if anyone's name could hush Li Ren's attacks on his credibility, it would be Razuten's. Rin-ji liked to think Razuten wouldn't have taken him in if he were hopeless. He was just a little... disorganized.

Razuten.
Li Ren cared little about firebending, but she cared a lot about the military. Razuten's name was definitely one she recognized.
Her father had complained frequently about the young firebending master when he had joined the military. He said he was lazy and spent all his time womanizing, wasting his talents. Since then he had grudgingly come to respect him, as it seemed much of the military had. Li Ren definitely knew who Razuten was.
Li Ren suddenly burst into laughter, "You had me going there for a second. If you're going to make up a firebending teacher to impress people, I suggest someone other than Razuten."

"I bet you'd wish I were lying," he said, remaining somewhat confident in the face of her laughter. Though it was the harshest disbelief he'd been faced with, Li Ren was not the first to call his bluff when he insisted he was associated with the firebending master. Generally the arguments were mostly just exasperating. "Don't think he'd bother with some hopeless servant? Especially not one that spilled the Lady Yeng."

"You're delusional," Li Ren stated simply, giving him a lofty look. "Razuten is a respected member of the military. You're a servant and not a very good one at that. How could you ever be his firebending student?" It made no sense at all. Certainly this servant hadn't been accepted into the military, had he? No, that wasn't possible. None of it was. After all, she had heard a rather delicious rumor that she suspected this boy might know something about.
"I heard that young lord Heshen was in a firebending accident and now he's practically bald," she commented slyly, "I don't suppose you know anything about that?"

Rin-ji's lips quirked in an undeniable half smile before he gained control of his emotions again. As cooly as he could manage, he shrugged. "Well," he started in a falsely polite tone, "he never was very good at it. Probably did it to himself."

"They say he might never get his eyebrows back," she added, watching Rin-ji's reaction carefully. "I heard someone say that when they find the culprit, they're going to let young lord Heshen do the same to him," she took a step past him and reached up for his topknot, tugging on it as she whispered near his ear, "Bald."

Rin-ji waved his arm awkwardly to try and get the girl off of him. "The kid will probably just kill whoever he thinks did it to him," he scoffed. "Violent spoiled brat. You'd get along with him better than his sister."

"What? You think that after you got done with me that the lord just kind of let me slide with a slap on the wrist?" He scoffed, putting down his basket to quickly undo and then retie his hair. Let down, it was clear how very poorly cut it had been but once it was out of his face again it became less obvious. He held the hairtie in his mouth as he continued to speak. "My life goes on even after you leave."

"Congratulations. I'm thrilled to hear you're such an independent woman," she said dismissively. "Don't be simple. I was talking about knocking you on your a**. I can do it again if you need a reminder." Smiling as if this was all a game, she took a step back and fell easily into a ready stance.
"Well?"

Li Ren's easy smile quickly turned into disgust as she caught him by the arm, jerking him back towards her. He was a servant, someone far below her. How dare he try to dismiss her?
"Not if I break your arm," she replied in an overly sweet tone that wasn't in the slightest bit believable. Tightening her hold on him, her voice took on a more serious tone, "Don't take me lightly."

Instinctively Rin-ji pulled at his arm to free it, her grip uncomfortably strong, and his eyebrows furrowed to conceal any fear. He made a point of not letting on that he was intimidated and focused on his anger. "I told you," he hissed, "you can't kick me around anymore. You might not believe it but I'm telling the truth about whose student I am. I'm no servant and I've got no lord you can get to whip me so let go."
