They did kill Gaara although he was revived. Asuma was such a cool guy, but I don't think Shika will smoke anymore quote "I knew I hated smoking" but now.. what will happen to Kurenai, will she want revenged like Hayate's girlfriend? and who's the king?? crying I was really shocked though.....next thing you know they'll kill Hinata, and Kakashi (I'd sue...)

I'm betting it's Naruto - it just makes sense. He's always been overlooked as something of an idiot and a half-rate ninja, but I think since he's returned from the time-skip journey his reputation of what he's really like is starting to get around with the rest of the village. Plus if you look at it in chess terms, when you lose the king it's simply game over.

If Akatsuki gets Naruto, it's game over.

Along the chess line of thinking, though, it could be Sasuke. I'm not quite sure at this point who Kishimoto is setting up for the bigger villain, Akatsuki or Orochimaru, or if they're of equal threat.

Back on track, though, I was pretty upset about Asuma. My friend was convinced that they wouldn't kill him, but lo and behold next chapter he was dead. Good for Kishimoto to show that he's still not afraid to kill off main characters, but like a lot of people I kind of worry for Kakashi.

I also think Naruto will be pretty angry at Akatsuki. First Gaara, now they're killing Konoha jounin... plus Asuma was someone he went to for help with the wind chakra. Even if he doesn't snap, it's another thing to add to his list of things to get even with them for.

I wonder, since Naruto is wind chakra also, if he'll inherit Asuma's knives?

Me neither - I think it'll be a Rasengan with razorblade wind swirls coming off of it instead of just the normal Rasengan...

And Akatsuki's plan is kind of lame, but face it... there's a really limited number of Villain Agendas. Destroy the World, Enslave/Dominate the World, and the scale narrows from there. Destroy one person. Destroy one group of people. Dominate one group of people. Then there's the Godhood plots, which Orochimaru is kind of using already.
