The two times I went into this with NO plans whatsoever I failed MISERABLY. I absolutely must have a plan. Or at least a starting point.

I'm semi-planning. I have a starting point for what happens, but I still haven't a resolution... I really need to make a resolution; I write until my brain hurts if I don't know where I'm headed.

I've done some preplanning, I have a vague outline since it primarily goes through several events in history and I have several characters.

The extent of my pre-planning was to decide on a character, a premise, and an idea of what's going to be inside the novel. I know myself, and if I made a plan, the perfectionist in me would kick in and writing NaNo would become impossible. A loose framework allows me to improvise, which is the best way to get me to write a lot. I also enjoy seeing the story unfold in front of me as I type away, so that's another plus, too.

I have a 10-page file of the character and location names, the storyline, and random stuff that I want to include somewhere. It might be a bit much, but hopefully it'll prevent me from writing myself into a corner.

I ususally get so caught up in pre-planning that I end up wanting to just write it out . . . so right now I'm restraining myself to just organizing the thoughts in my head. Although, mentally, I've already written several pages. I just pretty much memorize anything clever I've thought of and hope I don't forget.

I have a rough outline and my two MCs are pretty detailed, but I don't have that much else biggrin
Which is very nearly how I like it. I just want to come up with vague descriptions of my minor characters and I'm set.

I've got the basic plot, a detailed outline of the ending (don't ask why, I just always like planning out exactly how my stuff will end), and I've given my characters a little thought.
There's still a lot more I need to do though.

I've been using my journal on Gaia to hold ideas. Maybe later, I'll unlock it for public viewing, but it probably won't make sense. I use names without referencing them.
I have no plot, but I do have three characters, well, maybe four, if the fourth gets used.
I have a setting! My made up and previously abandoned world!
I have no antagonists or conflicts, except that somewhere, people are worried about the succession of leadership. Somehow, this is going to matter to the characters.
Well, that's all I got, though I keep thinking about it. Which means I'm working at it.

I have my story broken into four parts. The fourth part is a recaps and ending. The first part has been completely outlined. The second part has all of it's ideas but they need to be organized, and the third part mostly rotates around the third, but ideas are still needed.
That's where I currently stand all my character are made and have personalities, but I will make more characters if I need to.
I am somewhat worried that I'll finish the story and not reach 50k though. sad

I got all excited at the beginning of the month and did most of my planning then. I pretty much just sat down and brainstormed all in one Word document. Anything from character bios, to world building, to a plot breakdown. I think it went better than when I plan my regular stories. I came across the plot twists and turns so easily it surprised me.
Last year I didn't plan, because I didn't hear about NaNo until November 2nd, but it still turned out ok.

Just planning for plot, character/place names etc. Minimal character development, though. I'll let them write themselves biggrin

I've already done all of my pre-planning, and have had it done all October. The first few days of October were dedicated to doing my uber-detailed outline for my story, and since I discovered I was only working with half of an idea it took a few more days to figure out the second half of the story. sweatdrop
However, after the first week of October, I considered myself ready, and I worked out a few last-minute kinks in the characters in my free time for the rest of the month. As far as I'm concerned, I'm ready for one month of hell. mrgreen
