Board breaking teaches you how to commit to the strike. That's about it.

The main thing to focus on wood breaking is the center, where the two sides are weakest, just add a little force and it'll break. I dislike the concept of wood breaking; yeah it teaches you where and how to apply an attack to do some damage. But in a fight you won't need all of that to win.

You don't need that to win? So you're saying that I could punch a guy in the shoulder, and win a fight? And again, it teaches a commitment to the strike. It's not supposed to demonstrate power, and technique but rather that you will hit and not pull punches.

why do i feel were going around in circles here?why do we keep arguing the point, breaking has its advantages and disadvantages like anything else. it alone will not make you a better martial artist, but it will train your hands and mind to be harder and more resiliant. if you want to brag about your breaking skills your not going to impress anyone, and only embarass yourself. if you ablolutely deny that it has any worth then your're only showing how little you know, and are no better than the people who mindlessly brag on themselves.
thats my opinion anyway.

I think really the only thing it can do is to teach you to strike more accurately and it 'breaks' whatever body part your using. I would never go into a fight and use full blast elbow strikes or uppercuts. Beating or breaking something hard toughens then body part. Or literally breaking the bone over and over again would toughen it up although that would probably make for a costly medicals bill lolz. But you could get basically the same effect training on a punching bag or just a pole. So its a toss up, whatever your opinion is of it.

ive read that in the old days some ninja/samuri would break there fingures on perpose to to enlarge them. im not that insane or stupid. but i have to disagree. a punching bag is a nice soft bag you can pound on a skull isnt.

what about iron body training, ive heard many people compare it to breaking. my instructor says that your blocks should be thrown as hard as your punches so you hurt them even when youre blocking. i think its a good idea, and i know i can break a thin board with my side block. pluss if you can take a crack to the shins its one less thing they can use against you.

I wouldnt exactly say punching bags are soft. Well I guess it depends what type you train with.
