Another one of those, then. Raven drummed her fingers on the table, pleased to be asked as an authority on the subject and not wanting to show it. "He is kept inside, yes. Anoki Kenelm insisted on creating a space in his room, so the two are always together. I understand this is the case with most dragons and their partners. D-Corp, correct?"
Anoki didn't even notice Donat's distress, or anything else until he was about halfway through his sundae. It was too good to notice anything else, like Raven's talking or the dull ache that was spreading through his head. It was only when it siezed with sharp cold pain that he stopped, dropped his spoon, and grabbed his head. "Owwww!"

Kumoru nodded slowly, taking in the information with a pang of worry. He certainly had no space for a dragon in his home, especially not with three children, and a fourth coming soon. The place was crowded as it was.
Still, he had agreed, if somewhat reluctantly at first, to take care of Donat and raise him as per D-corp's requirements. And if that meant taking a dragon into the home as well, then he would have to follow his duties to the letter.
Kumoru silently cursed the code of ethics with which he had been brought up in his magic school.
After a moment, Donat felt better. Then he took another spoonful of ice cream - small this time; he thought he had learned his lesson - and ate it carefully. A little tingling, but not too bad.
Then the goat ventured to take a bigger bite. And there was the brainfreeze again.
"Oww," he half-whimpered and half-giggled. Why did ice cream do that?
Hearing Donat, Kumoru glanced over at him and laughed a little, prodding the goat's leg under the table with his toe. "Sounds like you should slow down there."

"I see," Raven murmured. They really did get people from all walks of life there. Unless this gentleman was also a thief or a crook. It was entirely possible, but for some reason Raven had a hard time believing it. He could have been someone who just jumped at the chance. Or like her, and in it for the money. "If you don't mind my asking, how did they get you?"
Still holding his head, eyes screwed shut from pain, Anoki nodded. Whoever said that, he would follow the directions and hope the headache would go away. It was stopping it from eating his ice cream!

Kumoru maneuvered the cone so he could get at a drip that was oozing slowly down the side towards his hand. He slurped a little at the top of the ice cream after that, then licked around the edge to be sure there were no more drips for the moment.
At Raven's question, though, he narrowed his eyes a little and glanced around at the other tables in the ice cream parlor. They were largely unoccupied, but there were still more people than Kumoru felt comfortable with if he was going to talk about his forbidden magic.
After a moment, he settled for telling her, "Let's just say that D-corp was the one place that offered to support my studies, so long as I take care of Donat."
One eye still half-shut at the dull ache of his ice cream headache, Donat cut off a little piece of banana with his spoon and ate that. It did not really help too much, but it did not make the headache any worse, either, giving it a bit more time to fade away.
When the brainfreeze went away after a few more minutes, Donat settled for taking very small scoops. It would take longer to eat the banana split, but he could do it painlessly.

Raven watched this display with some distaste. Ice cream cones were so messy. It was precicely why she had ordered hers in a cup. It was neater, less sticky, and far easier to manage. Still, hers was melting too, so she spooned out a gooey bit and quickly ate it before any could fall off her utensil, ears attentive.
Studies? The man didn't look particularly scholarly, but appearances could be decieving. She related somewhat to the sentiment he expressed. Not all places were willing to support brilliance, as she had been forced to find out. Maybe this man would be useful in her own research. "I see. What is your field, if I may ask?"
Taking a smaller spoonful of his own ice cream, Anoki ate that apprehensively. Nothing, good or bad, happened. He took another bite, to the same result. Encouraged by this, he swallowed three more bites in quick succession. This was working, things were finally going well, and-
"Owwww!" he yelped, putting his hands back on his head. That really hurt!

"It's too good to eat it slowly," Donat giggled to Anoki as he heard the other boy moan in pain again. "My tongue's all cold, too."
He forced himself to set the spoon aside for a moment, and kept his mouth shut to give it a chance to warm up inside again. After about twenty seconds, though, he stuck a finger in the bowl to mop up some chocolate syrup, then put that finger into his mouth.
"Soul magic, that sort of thing," Kumoru told her with a nonchalant shrug. He had had a while to come up with euphemisms for necromancy.
"How about you?" he asked after another lick of cherry-vanilla. If she was asking so many questions, maybe she would be willing to answer some, too. Kumoru kind of wanted to direct the conversation away from himself for the moment.

Anoki nodded slowly. Even that little bit of motion was painful, and he kept his eyes squinched shut. Now that it was mentioned, his tongue was cold too. Usually eating ice cream wasn't so painful, but usually Raven was watching him like a hawk, scolding him if he ate too quickly. This time her attention was off him, so pain aside, he picked up his spoon and starting eating again. He would finish if it was the last thing he did!
Soul magic. It was a term Raven had never heard before, and she frowned, but the question back to her put her in better spirits. She was curious, but talking about herself was one of her favorite things to do, provided she wasn't asked anything truly pressing. And talking about magic with someone who had a grasp of what she was saying was even better.
"I teach, actually, at that... establishment," she said importantly, patting her mouth with a paper napkin. "Mostly elementary spell basics thus far. My specialty is ritualistic magic, but none of the students have reached diversification yet."

A magic instructor? Interesting; Kumoru had always thought such a job might be entertaining, but he never really thought himself to be cut out for that kind of work. "Do you have very large classes?" he inquired, then nibbled at the edge of his ice cream cone a little.
Donat finished the last of one of the banana pieces, then reached in with two fingers to grab the cherry by the stem. He picked it out and sucked the chocolate syrup off before eating the cherry. So sweet and tasty.
And not cold, either. By the time he was done, his mouth had warmed up a little, so the goat went back to his ice cream, and made sure to eat it slowly. He peeked over the back of the facing bench so he could see Anoki and grinned.
"It's so tasty, I think I might want another one when I'm done with this one," he said with a giggle.

Raven let out a dry laugh at the next question. "Lords, of course not. If I set a room full of magic students loose on the world, the world would never forgive me." Then again, she didn't really care if the world forgave her, but it would be inconvenient either way. "About a half dozen at a time. That includes dragons, note."
Eating the fruit first looked like a good idea, so Anoki plucked a chunk of frozen banana from the side of the sundae and popped it into his mouth. Now that was good, sweet and flavorful. It helped his headache a little too, enough for him to have a couple more spoonfuls of ice cream. Alternating bites of ice cream with bites of fruit seemed to be the way to go.
When Donat spoke, Anoki shuddered. He couldn't possibly eat a whole other split by himself. It would make him sick! But it was so good. "I c-couldn't f-finish one," he admitted. "B-but maybe p-p-part of one."
