The Journal Begins...

Yes! Yes! YES!

The orb was hers! The Goblin King had been most difficult in his demands of her, asking her to obtain one of her stepmother's favoured possessions in return for the pixie essence. That ring had been given her stepmother, her wedding ring, a symbol of unity. The young girl scoffed & went back to coveting the precious thing before her, stroking a hand over the orb as though it were the most wonderful thing in the world.

It would be! She would see to it!

She feigned ignorance when she was asked time and again as to where the ring had gone, each time her performance perfect down to each and every detail. Her father loved her too dearly to think of her as a thief, and her stepmother had always been so indifferent of her presence that neither could possibly think of her as the one who had taken the beloved bauble. But to her that was all it was, a bauble, a thing, something that had no great value in the great scheme of things. Not compared to what she had now.

She placed the orb in the woven basket which previously had kept all of her most favoured things. But that's all they were now that she had her orb. Things. Objects. Pointless. So she had placed them in a box in her wardrobe and decided not to hang onto them. The orb shone with opalescent brilliance as she saw to it that the rest of her room was tidy and in order, she'd of course polished it beforehand, making sure it took center stage above all other things in the room with it's mere presence. She was proud, proud, prouder than ever a parent could be she dared say. This orb had so much potential, was beautiful regardless of it's basic form and kept her enthralled for hour after hour as she gazed into it's surface watching the mists swirl within, treating it with as much reverence as a gypsy would her crystal ball.

The thought of work crossed her mind and she scowled somewhat, taking a distinct dislike to the idea of leaving the orb at home where her parents could prod at it, paw over it, mar it's perfect surface with their grubby hands. No, no, no! That was not amicable in the least! She would take it away, take it with her and make sure no one but herself touched it. Working as a mere shop assistant, the hours were hardly long and hard, but they were long enough for her parents to have a good mooch about her room. She knew that they did so, rifling through her things and disturbing her tidy haven with their careless, nosey attitudes. Well, they would not disturb her orb not ever. It would go with her everywhere and would travel in the most comfortable conditions that she could afford it.

But she would worry about that tomorrow, for that is when such things would be afoot. She placed the velveteen cover over the orb and whispered a fond goodnight before lazing languidly on her bed, falling into a light slumber and dreaming of opalescent hues.

Work was dull as dishwater, stood there at the counter looking pretty and smiling every so often to potential paying customers. So fickle and two faced given that she cared nothing for these people at all, only for the fact that she was earning extra every time she managed to goad them into spending more money than they perhaps would have in the first off. It was quiet now though, the afternoon rolling into evening. It would be time for her to retreat home soon, away from the need to deceive constantly. A little of it now and then was quite alright, but all the time? It was tiring holding a mask up for too long.

Her supervisor informed her that it was time for her to leave, and she did so quickly, walking as quickly as she could without seeming too eager to get away. She found her orb glistening in her shoulder bag, surrounded by the velveteen and satin scarves that she had chosen especially to line the orb's protective, temporary cradle. Her shoes clattering, emitting a hollow sound as she descended the steps outside the rear entrance of the store and skittered out onto the pavement, hair billowing in the wind and satchel cradled protectively against her. Thankfully only a strong wind was blowing and the dark clouds overhead had seen fit not to let loose the rain they no doubt contained. She was thankful for this given that her work uniform with it's delicate weave suffered greatly in adverse weather conditions like rain and she did not like the thought of having to press it too often. Though to be honest it wasn't the uniform that was at the forefront of her mind as she quickly made her way home keeping an even pace against the wind.

She offered a humm rather than a hello as she made her way upstairs, opening her satchel to steal a fleeting glance at the orb in the dark before bringing it out into the light and turning it over in her procelain white hands.
"You will be great..."
She purred, cooing to the orb before setting it lovingly back in it's basket, surrounding it with soft satins, silks and fabrics with sheen, happy to dote on the object of her affection and encircle it with opulence. She would have fed it the finest of things if it had a mouth to feast upon her offerings, but alas, not a thing. Still, it could not hurt to offer it everything it wanted. After all, she would do anything for the orb anything at all that would make it content in her company.

Her dear orb.

The wind howled against the windows outside, a veritable gale billowing around the house and causing the old trees next to window to scrape along the glass with thin, finger like branches. She huddled under her blankets, orb held protectively against her as the storm began to rage outside to it's full extent, rain, lightning, thunder. There was something about storms that always made her feel uneasy, as though there was something about them that she should fear. It was probably all those wives tales that her father used to spin to her in order to get her to go to bed on time, tales of monsters that lurked in the shadows caused by the blanket of dark clouds. Curse him for placing such paranoia into her mind!

The orb was warm to the touch, smooth and comforting to the touch as she ran her hand over it's opalescent surface in an attempt to make herself calm and collected once more. It was just a storm and there was no way that she would let the weather get the better of her usually level head. It would help her little to panic over such things, so she let herself drift along the curves of the orb, soothing herself almost to the point of slumber before a loud creak interrupted her transition into the sleeping world. Those damn trees! It was little wonder that her father and stepmother hand't chopped them all down for comforts sake, the amount of noise that they made during the frequent storms was near unbearable.

The lightning outside reflected in her eyes, she lay awake in bed staring at the ceiling whilst the tumult outside continued on it's violent course. The orb lay by her head, warm as ever and nestled gently between her shoulder and her neck. A greater comfort to her than anything in the world could be at this moment in time, as it eased her troubled mind and chased away the stories told to her as a child. She was glad of it's company at times like these, it meant that she need not lay abed, tossing and turning frantically. She had no need to feel alone when she had her orb with her.

Going away for the weekend? Left home alone? She couldn't think of anything better that had happened to her! They'd left all the necessary things for her to look after herself, and some money in case she needed to keep herself occupied over the coming days. The first thing she did was to sweep up her orb and take it downstairs to the sitting room, where she laid it on the couch in it's woven basket before pattering over to the small sound system in the corner of the room. Delicately removing one CD from the machine and placing it back in it's case, she grinned wickedly and placed in another, pressing the play button insistently and waiting tensely. The house flooded with gentle, classical melodies all afternoon, and she danced round and round in circles as the music lifted her usually sour spirit.

Finally she settled on the small two seater couch and placed the orb in her lap. She wondered if playing classical music to the orb would have the same effect as it was rumored to have on young children. She wanted the orb to be cultured, refined, and to have only the best. She had a great dislike for things and people that showed a lack of cultural knowledge and the inability to appreciate fine music and fine arts like painting, sculpture, and dance. Rising in a fluid and refined motion, she made her way to the bookcase nearby and ran her finger along the spines of her father's many leather volumes, all of them classical literature. She picked out one carefully and brought it to the orb with a smile, sitting down once more and opening the book before turning pages with her delicate porcelain white hands. In her usual melodic tone she began to read to the orb, putting every once of effort into reading so that the orb would benefit fully from the experience.

Having read a few chapters, she took the book back to the bookcase and placed it back in it's rightful space. After having done do she went to her orb and took it up, walking into the kitchen and setting it a little way from the stove on the kitchen counter. Taking various ingredients from the cupboards above the counter and stove, she set them down and talked the orb through what exactly it was that she was doing as she mixed and turned on the stove. Soon two pans were bubbling away merrily, and in the oven, a few small, choice pieces of meat were browning. Still she talked, looking every so often to her dear orb and smiling. Having the orb to talk to was rather relaxing, as it didn't need to apply any opinions or logic, and all it did was sit there silently and, she hoped, listen.

She sat back and patted her stomach, sated and pleased with her meal. Taking the napkin from her lap, she cleared things away and then went to her orb, gazing down at it as she contemplated just what it was that they should do next. Then it hit her. A Film! She took the basket in her arms and once again entered the sitting room, taking the television remote and turning on the box in front of the couch, searching through channels to find something decent. News, talk shows, reality shows, all of it boring and about as enjoyable as watching paint dry.

"This is where the VCR comes in handy...."
