Phib furrowed his brow, and viewed the pup with a questioning stare. Now they were washing up? He supposed it didn't surprise him. It was only a matter of time before some drowned fool floated ashore. He had not, however, expected the drowned fool to still be alive. Rising, feeling a slight ache between his shoulder blades, he approached the child, crossing by Amelie on the left. She turned her head formally towards him, and arched her ears.

The pup looked thin with the dry salt weighing his fur down, and slightly grey from the sand. But there were a few dark patches across his face and chest which seemed to suggest further clarity in his fur. "Hello." he spoke somewhat precariously to the child, focusing in on the young eyes. Then, almost as if he was confused, he pulled back and scrunched his muzzle, looking around to be sure he wasn't still asleep. With a low yawn he stretched, pulling out the length of his long body across the rocks. He had a peculiar figure- he was somewhat longer then he was proportionately tall.

Amelie leaned towards Phib as he leaned, and he took that as a sign she was trying to say something. Curiously, he leaned forward, but his eyes were still trained on the child. "Hrm?"

"He doesn't speak like us." She spoke. "But I can understand him. He's looking for his home."

Phib scrunched his brow. "Is he from Hige's lands?" He mentioned. The other seaside pack- the one just south of them.

"I don't think so." Amelie whispered, and they both peered back at the child.

Phib sighed and shook his head. "Well, who are his parents?"

Amelie shut her eyes briefly. "Do you know the names of your parents?"

Quin was confused by the general speech between the two. He could not tell wether the female was telling the male the truth or that he was a tasty snack she'd found. He was especially unsure when the male fixed him in the eye and then yawned, jaws gaping. Quin stood perfectly still. His legs felt like jelly but he poured all of the willpower his small body could possess into standing rigidly, only a flicker of his eyes giving an indication externally of his apprehension.

Suddenly the question came into his mind. His parents? of course he did. "Se vadris Aquila na Banna" he answered "They were called Aquila and Banna". He wondered if the male knew his parents at all, if he knew the way Quin would be able to get home.

His milky blue eyes flicked from male to female and back, waiting for any sign of recognition.

Amélie frowned. She knew before Phib spoke that neither she, nor he knew those names. And they knew quite a few wolves. But she turned her head to Phib appreciatively anyways- sometimes she went through the motions, simply because it made her feel more normal. If Phib caught on, he didn’t say anything about it. But he told her just as simply as he would have had she not known.

“I don’t know those wolves.” Phib spoke, but was musing more on the pup’s strange language. “Banna and Aquila... were they alphas?” He was unlikely to know the subordinates of another pack. He gestured to Amélie, who reiterated the question to Quin.

But as she relayed it, Phib reposed, and settled himself down. “Ask him what side the beach was on.” He questioned, and peered towards the far shore. If it had come from the other side- well, half the wolves in the wood didn’t even believe there was another side! That would be of some interest to him.

The pup frowned for a moment as he was grilled by the pair. "Abara? kera resuna ha vadria Fordua." the pup replied to the grey female. "Alphas?... no They were the betas of our pack."

The second question gave him more f a pause for thought. Other side? What did the male mean by other side? Quin didn't really have a conception of the beach other than north and south. He had known all of the beach where he used to stay - there wasn't that much of it mostly it was cliffs that met the sea directly.

He tried to put this into words."Idria que na amara. Daraus... amara fereo contatum idara. Quena canara hastes friero tava." "Well, all I know is that this beach is not one that I know.. and these lands seem very different to those I knew. It's a lot colder here..."

He looked at the male, wondering if he understood.

He didn’t understand. The child’s words hit his ears in strange harmonic sounds that had no meaning to him. He had picked up a few languages from his days in the north- but even they were somewhat limited, and he could not even identify the origin of this one’s. It reminded him somewhat of Rio’s peculiar speech...but, they did not seem so familiar as to be one in the same. He kept an ear out for a familiar word, however, and privately noted that it was handy to have Amélie in a situation like this. It would open a lot of options in the future if the woods got more integrated. Politely he turned his head, waiting for Amélie to fill him in on what the child had said.

“He says his parents were the betas of his pack.” Amélie spoke, but her eyes did not leave the child. “He says the beach isn’t like the one he knew- and it’s colder here.”

Phib rose his head objectively and shifted his tail, thinking to himself. He knew Amélie probably put a bit more faith into his memory then he might have- but he honestly knew nothing about what this child had come from. He had had some belief that there was land on the other side of the water. But if it hadn’t come from there, then further south. If it was further south it was possible to return him- but it seemed unrealistic to just set out looking.

Phib swung his head back and forth, and snorted faintly. “I don’t know the land he speaks of. But I will see if anyone else does. Rio came from the south and knows some languages.” Rio could probably just ask the water from where she had carried him. “Until then, just keep him out of trouble.”

Amélie’s ears perked, and she addressed the child again. “He doesn’t know- but he is going to ask Rio if he knows anything. But you should get somewhere warmer and rest until then.”

Quin wasn't really sure to make of what the female was telling him. It did make sense that he should find somewhere warm and rest his cold body. He was shivering, hungry and would have given anything to be able to snuggle up beside his mother, his brother and sisters...

Who was Rio, though? Perhaps a wolf from far away? Quin decided that since the male had made the decision that this order had to be followed he should comply. He looked up at the grey female, scooting a little closer to her now that his audience with the male seemed to be over and spoke quietly.

"Idris ahrana sliovir?" Will you show me where I can rest? he did not know the land, did not know their ways and did not wish to intrude into someones packlands without a guide when he could not explain his being there without Amelie's assistance.

Yes,” Amélie ‘spoke’, projecting her thoughts loud enough so that Phib could hear them as well. He didn’t appreciate the non-vocal communication and showed this by slightly docking of his left ear. Amélie did not seem to notice. “Our den isn’t far, you can rest there for now.” There were quite a few new mothers on the lands- perhaps she could find one of them to look after the child until they found word of his kin. She could only imagine the wrought the mother was feeling. Just thinking about it brought a sickness to her stomach.

Sometimes she could locate a person by viewing the memories of another. But a child’s mind was so much more fragile then an adults- and what the child saw was an idealized image of his mother or father... it wasn’t enough for her to get a feel for. And as it were- the strange words were a barrier. She could translate them directly, but if she was confronted with them from a secondary source, she doubted she could read the mind as clearly. It would take some practice.

Here-“ She spoke, and gently picked the child up by the collar. She leaned back and took a peering in Phib’s direction, before scurrying off towards the small rocky den on the edge of the southern beach. He wasn’t sure what to make of the situation yet- but somewhat amiably, Phib trotted behind.

While she walked- she gently added; "Rio is a good friend. He can speak to water- but also, other wolf languages. He is from the south."

Quin found himself being carried once more, the odd female's words wriggling into his head again in that strange way. He was getting strangely used to this odd method of communication though - better to be understood in any way than not at all.

His mind conjured up images of warmth, a shelter, a wrm belly and wriggling forms all around. His mother, brothers and sisters. Cozy, contented, warm. Not cold, not confused and not amongst strange wolves. That was how life should be but not how it was and he tried to push those good memories away in the hope that the pain he associated with them would go away for the moment.

As she explained Rio to him, he only murmered a soft assent. Perhaps this other was his chance at getting home back to that warm...no he musnt think on it. If he was too far then it would only hurt to be told he could not get back to his people.

It was not that the pup was pessimistic but he had put the realities together and they made for grim conclusions. There was hope, always, but he tried not to let it rule him.

Amélie frowned as the thoughts passed across her own. She wished they were better wolves- maybe with a litter of fat puppies of her own to nestle the child in with to settle his nerves. But she did not have such children- and although they did have young mothers, it would take some time to convince them to add another larger boy with them. Where had he come from? It seemed so strange. But, Amélie noted- it sounded like something out of a story.

She reached the den at a slow pace, and did not hesitate to enter. It was small, as she had dug it herself, and fit just the small grey and the child. Phib didn’t seem too interested on entering, and he climbed up the mound to sit on top of the ground and ponder. Quietly, she set the boy down and let him be, giving him light touch with her nose before resting herself.

It is alright.” She said again, perhaps for the tenth time. “Sometimes stories are like this, you know. Good things can come from being lost. I am sure you will not be lost forever.”

It was warm, cosy and dark. Quin's tiredness seemed to overwhelm him now and he slumped against the grey female, nuzzling up against her flank almost instinctively, seeking out warmth and comfort. He trusted this female now. She had helped him, was looking after him - more than he could have hoped for in a strange land.

He heard her last words slipping into his mind just as he began to doze off and his dreams began to form from that one sentence - glimpses of hope, adventure and, eventually, being home again.

The little black and white pup nuzzled closer to Amelie, half dreaming that it was his mother.
