He settled onto the couch, keeping his feet on the floor instead of propping them up as he watched Beckett move back towards him. Scooping his own mug off of the table, he fiddled with the ceramic absently as he spoke. "Really? I've been around maybe a week or so I suppose. Glad to know I'm not the only one that's new around here." It certainly didn't really seem like the place anyone would purposefully move to, unless they were trying to geta way like him. He didn't mind the size of this place - it wasn't small enough that everyone knew you or large enough that you could too easily slip through the cracks. He wanted to comment about the area not exactly seeming big enough for the wolf's tastes, but he got the strong impression that it was best to keep his mouth shut on that one.

"Where did you live before you came here?" Cutler inquired, taking a seat in a chair nearby, crossing his legs and taking another small sip of his tea. Nothing like what he was used to, but it was good enough. It'd have to do. He regarded Kieran calmly.

He crossed his ankles, tail tip fidgeting a bit as he mulled over a reply. "A smaller town a ways away." Having settled on being vague, Kieran shrugged his shoulders. He wasn't excited about answering anything that had to do with too far back. He was here, now, after all - that's what mattered to him. "It's not a place anyone would know of," he added before tipping his own mug to take a gulp of the luke-warm coffee. It really would be better to go warm it up again, but third time around wasn't usually the highlight of the day for the same batch of coffee.

"Ah, I see." The wolf didn't press any farther, cupping his hands around the styrafoam to feel the warmth, smile curling a little farther in the corners as it seeped through his hands. "That's a great deal closer than where I came from." He mused.

Curiosity perked with that reply and Kieran's ears pricked up. "Oh? Where are you from then?" The expanding smile on the wolf's face seemed as if he was relaxing, which made his smile grow a little as well. It was hard to be nonchalant if someone else was too absorbed in their own actions and appearance, or were too high-strung to actually relax. "I haven't traveled, honestly, but maybe I've heard of it."

"Ah. It's not anywhere on Gaia." He was looking down at his cup, a gentle smile on his lips now as he thought about dear old England, about the life he lead there. "Another world, one might say..." He shook his a moment later, looking up. "As one can imagine, it's been quite a change."

The strange look that crossed the other's face brought up the fact that perhaps he had gone too far with his questions. Sympathy darted across his eyes, feeling the same span of uncrossable distance between him and what was once his own home. Yet the wolf didn't seem offended by his curiosity, which confused Kieran considering the man's attention to detail. He didn't need to say that it was indeed a far ways away to be outside of Gaia - that would be redundant and probably would make him upset.

"How long have you been here?" He tried to shift the subject a little, tail tip still unconsciously flicking at times.

"3 weeks at most, not much more." The wolf responded evenly. His hadn't been a look of self-pity, nor pain. Just...this was a bit unfamiliar, all of this, and he so did dislike being out of his depth. But he wouldn't be, not for long. As soon as he could get his bearings, he could begin again. Perhaps not in the same business, no - from watching the comings and goings of the population, he sensed that Gaia hardly needed a sea-based trading company - cars and the like served a much better purpose, not to mention those strange machines; airplanes, ah yes. They were magnificent and wonderous. - but...something.

He'd manage just fine.

"That's actually longer than I've been around," he smiled good-naturedly as he spoke, keeping at bay the bit of his own negative emotions that threatened to come forward. Unfamiliar wasn't even half of his problems, and he was best at just shoving things aside right now. "I guess I was lucky to stumble into this job, and my apartment. How have you fared, Mr. Beckett?" He sipped his coffee, eyes resting on the other man in their conversation, waiting a bit on response as he considered his own thoughts. At least it wasn't an awkward one.

Mr. Beckett, mark. Ah well. It was a pity, losing one's title again. He had worked so hard to gain it, though..."I've yet to find a job, but I was similarly lucky in that I was offered a place to stay - even a small allowance, so that I don't necessarily have to work. I will, of course, I'm not particularly keen on living off the charity of others..." He frowned just slightly. "Though I am not entirely sure what that occupation will be."

If Kieran knew that the title he had prescribed to Cutler Beckett had somehow offended or hurt him, he made no note of it as he continued on. He nodded lightly to acknowledge the other's sentiments about charity - it made sense, though it really wasn't anything he had thought about before. If someone was willing to offer him help, he was probably going to take it without muhc reluctance. He smiled a little crookedly, ignoring the fact that he'd been just as ignorant when he got here to his own occupation. He'd always been that way with life, he'd always needed Maka to hold his hand with it all.

"You could always work at a coffee shop!" He chuckled as he said his peace, hiding his own problems behind his laughter.

Although, there was no way for the cat to know, as the wolf had chosen not to use his title when they had exchanged names. It honestly didn't bother him...much.

Much. >>

"I could, at that. Although, I must say I'm used to something more...hmm...grand. No offense meant." He shot a friendly - although...somewhat mischevious - look at Kieran. "Where I am from, I was one of the heads of rather large shipping company, you see." Rather large. What an understatement. The East India Trading Company had been...an empire in and of itself.

Kieran's chuckle veered more towards a giggle as he balanced his mug with one hand while the other covered his mouth. There was certainly no offense taken at Beckett's statement, though there was the keen implication that he had already assumed as much about the other's tastes.

"Ah, but it's rather homey here. That's why I liked it to begin with." The smile that settled back on his face was a little brighter, grazing the corners of his eyes though not yet resting purposefully within them. "A shipping company? So you worked with foreign relationships then. Is that how you ended up here in Gaia?" The tips of his ears flickered a little with interest, and his tail didn't seem to want to sit still very well any more.

"I can see how it would suit." The wolf conceeded with a nod, looking around the place. "It is...quaint. Cozy, if one likes that sort of thing." With the undertone of 'I don't'. He turned back to Kieran with that polite smile. "Seems like pleasent enough work. There are far worse jobs." An eyebrow, however, was raised at the hand that came up to cover the mouth. He was...amusing?

"Ah...no, interestingly enough. Or rather - if it has, then I was not aware. No, my coming here was much more...puzzling. In addition to my memory being...a bit fuzzy on the details."

Kieran heaved a sigh, his whole chest rising and falling with the action. "You know what your problem is?" he set his coffee mug down on the wooden table with a loud clack, "You're far too serious about things." Pulling his legs up, finally breaking that little bit of manner he had shown, he tucked them under himself in a frog position. "You need to relax some. I'm not here to judge you or anything like that." He offered a true smile this time, which tug at the corners of his mouth before finally turning them up.

"You're just so uptight, you need to loosen up!" He broke into a chuckle, a taint of color rising into his cheeks for his forwardness. Certainly, a little bit of chat had drug this one out of his shell.

(( Yes, he's very... oblivious. XP ))
