I'm disappointed, my library doesn't have this book... so I don't know how I can get my hands on it short of buying it

The book is not that expensive. Don't pay more than eight bucks for it. Check your local used bookstores.

I read the book a while back and I bought it at Walmart for 8 dollars.

I was wondering the same thing reading it about why the dad couldn't do anything and why the mom only singled out him. I heard there were three other books after this one. Maybe one of them is by the other brother.

I'm a substitute teacher taking courses for reading endorsment and this was one of the books that the teacher was saying always gets read by students. Then they get their friends to read it. While it's a horrible thing to happen to a person I'm glad to know of a book that will get other students to read. Hopefully they can learn from it, besides the reading practice, and recongnize things in their friends and motivate themselves to do something about it. That's what I found most awful about it was that there were several people that knew but couldn't or wouldn't do anything about it.

I mean, I would have called the police. But then again, maybe there wasn't enough evidence. It pained me to read that the boy stole stuff from the supermarket, went to school wearing the same clothes.

The worst part was what happened with the diaper. That got me crying my eyes out. There are probably mothers or fathers who do this to their kids now. It must be some kind of psychological thing. But I am so glad the boy grew up and wrote books about it some people could be aware that this kind of thing actually happens.

There is a book or two written by one of his brothers, but I don't remember which one. "A Child Called 'It'" is the first book in a trilogy, all written by Dave. I don't know if that cleared anything up or not. My understanding is that once Dave was removed from the house, the mother began focusing her attention on the other children, but mostly the older 2.

I guess I'm not sure what to contribute on this book... it was awful... I think most everyone would agree that the mother was horrible, that the neighbors should have done something, etc, etc.

The only thing that I keep thinking of when I read stories like this concerns teachers. What are the laws that make it so hard for a teacher to confront parents? I don't see why we think they help our children, because often a teacher will know somthing is wrong, but without huge bruises and wounds in open areas it is hard to get people to pay attention to a problem, and even then a social worker may not get around to the kid's home for a month. That just seems wrong, there should be ways to get kids out of bad homes sooner.

All three books are incredible, every time I run a foster parenting class, I suggest that they go out and pick up these books. The first obviously, but I stress The Lost Boy as it really sheds light on the behavior issues many foster kids have.
Meeting Dave was an incredible experience. The first time was before A Man Named Dave had been published, and although Dave was well adjusted, especially considering his life, you could tell after only a few minutes how incredibly angry he was about what had happened. Having read AMND a few years later, and spoken to him again, I get the feeling that I first met him before the "big meeting" with his mother as an adult.

This is one of the best, most moving books I have ever read. I was crying through half of it. It horrifies me that a mother could do that to her child though.

I read this book a few years back and recently re-read it.

It was gripping and also very, very disturbing. For me the ammonia in the bathroom parts were the hardest. I agree though, it's something everyone should read. Shed's light on a subject that needs it. And yeah.

I need to get my hands on the other two in the series one of these days

Dave Pelzer put child abuse in perspective for readers. Most have not suffered to his extent, and it definelty raises awareness. I shed a few tears in this book and others of his series, and I would recommend it to any living soul who can read.
