aren't the custodians supposed to have been early versions of the space marine but they were much harder to create than the normal marine (but much stronger, psychically active etc) so they were used only as the elite guard while the normal marines were used as troops. Don't ask me where i heard this but i have seen many mentions to the custodes on a lot of forums so i guess they're surrounded by a bit of mystery. I know they were funded like a chapter though and the chapter master is strong as primarch(.... this may be speculation as all of this is). Plus if they were formed like all other chapters whos there primarch....... i mean if they were prototypes they should have a primarch who would be incredibly powerfull. Think about it the clone of the emperor but a super clone closer to the skills of the emperor than any of the other primarches.
please be aware that was pure speculation with a small amount of info i have heard thrown in

I've not heard that, but it does make some sense.
Before I got into 40k, I always thought that the Custodes were what retired Force Commanders went to or something.

Yeah, well as per my knowledge, they seem to be each as powerful as a particularily skilled Force Commander.

The custodes are much like the grey knights in many ways. One: They used the stormbolter integrated on a halberd that look alot like the ones the early grey knight termie models used and two: It is believed that the custodes were made from the flesh of the emperor, meaning they did not have a primarch in a way, they were THE Emperors personal bodyguard. I believe they had this stuff written in the horus heresy books..... i added in the grey knight speculation for two reasons, one: the halberds the custodes use do look alot like the ones the early grey knight models used, and two: i had heard that much of the grey knights equiptment are hand me downs from the custodes somewhere, cant remember it for the life of me though..... The only difference i can think of between a grey knight and a custodes really is who trained and raised them. The emperor raise his custodes and trained them and the grey knights are trained by.... well, im guessing senior grey knights, but im sure it isnt the emperor since hes kinda on the throne at the moment.

I don't think the actual Space Marines come in different versions, just their armor...
They are just spawn of their Primarch's geneseed and whatnot. Also, another question. Space Marines are incredibly protective of their geneseed. What do they do with it, and how is it used to create new marines? Do they use the genetics of dead Marines to create new ones?

Much to my surprise the third Horus Heresy novel features an Imperial timeline, counting the millennia and their designations. This dear readers, is OFFICIAL FLUFF.
M 1-15: Age of Terra. Humanity dominates Earth. Civilisations come and go. The Solar system is colonised. Mankind lives on Mars and the moons of Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune.
M 15-18: Age of Technology. Mankind begins to colonise the stars using sub-light spacecraft. At first only nearby systems can be reached and the colonies established on them must survive as independant states since they are seperated from Earth by up to ten generations of travel.
M 18-22: Age of Technology. Invention of the warp-drive accelerates the colonisation of the galaxy. Federations and Empires are founded. First aliens encountered and first Alien Wars are fought. First human psykers begin to appear throughout human worlds.
M 22-25: Age of Technology. First Navigators are born allowing human spaceships to make even longer, quicker warp-jumps. Mankind enters a golden age of enlightenment as scientific and idealogical progress accelerates. Human worlds unite and non-aggression pacts are secured with dozens of alien races.
M 25-26: Age of Strife. Terrible warp-storm interrupt interstellar travel. Sporadic at first, the storms eventually prevent any warp jumps being made. The incidence of human mutation increases rapidly. Mankind enters a dark period of anarchy and despair.
M 26-30: Age of Strife. Human worlds ripped apart by civil wars, revolt, alien predation and invasion. Human psykers and other mutants dominate some worlds and these rapidly fall prey to warp-creatures. Humanity is on the brink of destruction.
M 30-present: Age of the Imperium. Earth is conquered by the Emperor and enters an alliance with the Mechanicum of Mars. Finally the warp-storms abate and interstellar travel is possible again. The Emperor builds the Astrinomican and creates the Space Marine Legions. Human worlds reunited in a Great Crusade that lasts for two hundred years.

I thought the Astronomican was a choir of psykers on Earth. Helped the Navigators on space vessels to communicate back and forth and such.

Faeruithir88 I thought the Astronomican was a choir of psykers on Earth. Helped the Navigators on space vessels to communicate back and forth and such. It is and its also a huge building as well i think. I'm sure i read in some fluff that was powered by the Emperor only.
