"That would be good, a quiet place." Pteryx answered the adult, watching them. They were so large, they towered over Pteryx's head and to her they were slightly frightening. But nothing they were doing was threatening. They were closer now, and she could see how they were all different shades and marks. The lighter coloured ones were much easier for Pteryx to make out, she could see a number of lighter coloured bodies scattered around amongst the moving dark shadows.

A very strange feeling started to build in Pteryx's middle, one that she ignored as she looked around at the pack curiously. But soon it had intensified so much that Pteryx found herself dropping onto her knees and gasping. The pain really took over then, and she fell onto her side in the middle of the legs, crying out as a intense pain that burnt and stabbed at Pteryx's small limbs, coupled with a blinding light that surrounded her and blinded Pteryx even with her eyes squeezed shut.

When it was over and the light had faded, a petite limbed teenage girl that looked not much larger than what she had been as a child, was left curled up and whimpering on the ground, head burrowed into her arms and wings.

Pteryx looked so small next to the wolves. He watched them, and watched Comus glaring around at the rest to make sure they weren't crowded too much. But then the child fell to her knees and he started, moving toward her and looking around for a threat. A moment later, the light came, and he recognized what was happening in time to look away. The wolves turned away too, confused at the child suddenly becoming blinding light.

As the light died down and he saw the huddled form on the ground--he'd almost think she hadn't grown with how small she still was-- he thought of how she'd been hurt by the other growings she'd seen, and winced. How much worse was it when it was your own light, one you couldn't even turn away from? And that on top of the usual pain of growing.

One of the wolves nudged her with it's nose; he waved it away and knelt on the ground next to her. "Pteryx-- are you all right? You don't have to move yet if it still hurts."

Slowly, as the throbbing in her limbs died down and left Pteryx feeling tired and drained, she tried to uncurl again. Pteryx sat up with her knees to her chest. Tears were still falling down her cheeks, dispite the pain now being gone. While Pteryx waited for the throbbing in her eyes to go, she managed, "Was that it?"

While she spoke, Pteryx looked down at her hands and legs through half opened eyes as if she'd be able to see any changes clearly in them. The outline that she got wasn't much different from before. But she had grown, right? The pain, and the light, and a feeling of growing...

Pteryx twisted slightly in the direction Lupinus's voice had come from and asked,"Di...did I grow?"

One of the lighter coloured wolves had started to edge forward closer, glowing blue eyes focused on the new teenager. Once only a foot or so away, she lay down on her stomach nearby and watched.

Lupinus sat patiently as the girl managed to sit up. "That was it," he said. She was fine, then. Good. "Yes, you grew. Though, you're still about the size of a little one from what I can see," he added, amused. Well, it was dark, too. He turned to look as a blue-eyed wolf approached and lay down. "You're a pretty one, aren't you," he said to the wolf; she looked to be taking an interest in the teen.

He'd feel better if Pteryx had a wolf mount, especially with the recent prisoner issues. Sitting back on his heels, he leaned against the large dark wolf sitting behind him. To Pteryx, he said "When you're feeling better, you should learn to ride."

"I feel all numb." Pteryx muttered, but it was more to herself than to him. She crossed her legs slowly, examining herself. He was right, she had grown. She'd even grown outward slightly in places, places Pteryx had never really cared about before. An image of what Lupinus had been before the curse flashed in Pteryx's weary mind and she grinned weakly at him. "I'm catching up to you in age anyway, even if I am still small. ...and I am too old for the little girls now. Now I'm just stuck in the middle."

She followed his gaze to the wolf, interested as well. It was one of the ones Pteryx could see easier, silhouetted against the darkness and the darker coats of some of the other wolves nearby.

"Ride? They would let us ride them?"

The she-wolf didn't answer Lupinus, but she did crawl foward till she was right up against Pteryx as if she was giving her own silent answer.

Hah. She was catching up in age, strangely enough. He remembered how diorienting it had been to go through the sudden change in age and size and was glad he was done with that sort of thing. He hadn't felt like he was stuck in the middle as a teen, but then, there had been fewer children- and fewer adults as well, just Nox, really.

"You were almost too old for the little girls before anyway, you said." He added as the wolf moved closer to her, "I think it's clear that she would let you; why don't you ask her? That's what they came for, their agreement, to be mounts."

"I know. They were very little." Pteryx answered, and turned to look at the wolf. The giant head made her a bit hesitant, especially with how huge the eyes were and the smell of the wolf's breath.

"Would I be allowed to ride you?" Pteryx asked, and was a bit startled when she heard a voice in her mind.

"Of course. I'm Amyntas to you."

Pteryx, with a glance back at Lupinus, somehow stood on her tired muscles and tried to climb onto the Amyntas's back. It was strange, a little slippery but the fur was soft and warm. She had a fleeting thought that she might be even able to stay there and sleep for a while.

Amyntas stood up slowly.

Lupinus got to his feet, watching Pteryx just long enough to make sure she did still have the strength to climb onto the she-wolf's back. She didn't look as nervous now, he thought. He climbed onto Comus' back.

Comus growled at the wolves that circled them and they began to disperse, backing farther into the forest until only hints of glowing eyes still watching could be seen.

He looked back at Pteryx and her wolf. "Don't go too fast yet," he said, to both of them.

Pteryx looked back at Lupinus as she arranged herself on the back, the soft fur and feeling of something warm, strong and living underneath her a strange sensation. The warmth seemed to cause the aches she had to be less noticeable, or perhaps Pteryx was able to ignore it for this, she couldn't figure it out.

"Okay." Pteryx answered, and she heard the same voice of the wolf reply in a similar manner.

Amyntas waited for Comus, standing perfectly still. She could sense that the fey-girl was still very inexperienced.

Lupinus waited for Pteryx to make herself comfortable before telling Comus they were ready to go.

Comus' ears pricked up as he waited, and the dire wolf leaped forward before belately remembering to slow his pace. He slowed to a quick walk.

Lupinus looked back to make sure Amyntas was following and that they were all right, though he wasn't very worried. As long as they didn't start off trying to run, she'd catch on quickly enough.

((I suppose they should head back to the castle. XD))

Amyntas's pace was a good deal lazier than Comus for the first bit, but she picked up. Pteryx was glad it was slow at first... she had to get used to this strange rocking pace. She caught onto it quickly though.

"Is it always so... so..." Pteryx called, but she wasn't sure of the right word to use. So she ended up using, "Fun?" Not the right word exactly, but Pteryx was tired and explaining it would have taken up more energy than what was worth.
