Well, I think Bella has justification for saying that she didn't know yet.

After all, her parents divorced, which could make her wary of marriage. Also, she's only eighteen years old, and even though she is in complete love with Edward, it's the thought of the actual marriage. A lot of people think of marriage as more than just a union of two people, because in some ways it also signifies that you are an adult - your parents are giving you away, and you have to make it on your own (with your partner). Not only that, but Bella still has her whole life ahead of her, and maybe soon an eternity. Before getting married, she might want to live life just simply being Edward's girlfriend and enjoy it. (When I asked my mom if she liked being my dad's girlfriend, fiancee, or wife better, she said girlfriend, though I don't know if this counts for anything). Finally, even though Bella can be impulsive at times, I think she is a cautious person, too, and doesn't want to jump into any decisions until she has no more doubts or has her mind made up.

Some of that could be way off, but that's how I would see it, since Bella never really gave much reason to her response.

I know what you mean! I re-read that part today and through my head all I could say was Bella you IDIOT! I think Bella really brought down her public approval during New moon in Twilight I though she was reall ygood but now I'm almost intolarent of her! If I had been her I would have said yes even before he finished asking screw my parents past!

Anneh
This will be discussed in Eclipse. ^^ Bella has very good reasons, but Stephenie isn't telling us because then it would be a spoiler.

Exactly what I'm thinking about..,

I personally think marriage is a big thing...Think about the Charlie & Renee...Charlie having to be alone again (Please Don't Tell me that he's lived alone before, why not live alone again?) Yes eventually she would move out blah blah blah...But she would never be able to see him again. Renee....I'm sure y'all know how much she misses her daughter already while Bella is in Forks.

She has her reasons to be unsure of what she doesn't want to do...

If I were Bella I'd tell my beloved Edward I'd marry him AFTER he turned me. Because if I were in Bella's position where the man I was in love with had just left me for months, and then refused to turn me when we were reunited, I wouldn't feel secure accepting a proposal from him.

I don't really blame Bella.

I think Bella should be more worried about being changed than being married. She could still see her parents if they were married. Once she's changed though, the time she can spend with her parents (expecially her mother) would be pretty limited. Due to weather, and ageing.. Her dad will prolly refuse to let her get married to Edward anytime soon though.

I wasn't all that upset with Bella's response to Edwards proposal. I was perfectly content with Edward at least asking Bella to marry him, since usually he is the one is all about protecting her by telling her to leave him or something like that. And just beacuse she said to no to marrying him while she's still in high school doesn't mean its never gonna happen.

Gawd, I was shocked when she didn't immediately say know. But she probably would after he changed her.. Even though they would be together eternally anyway..

I can see why she would be hesitant, so I'm not mad at her about that. HOWEVER, if she decides on no, I'm am going to jump into the book and kick her.

Hard.

In the face.

Well, as some people have said, I don't think she really said no. I mean how would she tell her parents? I mean Ranae is against early marriages and Charlie thinks Edward is a horrible downright mean jerk so it's kinda hard for her.
She never really said no she just didn't say yes. I'm sure Eclipse (as others say) is going to explain whatever needs to be explained. (I hope lol)

I know that she didn't say outright "no", but I WAS hoping that the proposal, when it came, would be a bit more romantic than that. Ah well, it was kind of funny.

EDIT
AHH! Never mind, she DID say no! This is from a post of Stephenie's at the Lexiocn:

Bella said no. Bella does not want to get married. Bella's reasons will be explained early in Eclipse.

Ah!
