I disagree with 'Mai'.
I know that everyone spells it that way, but I believe it is wrong.
'Mai' is pronounced
'My', when her name is pronounced
'May'.
I think that it's supposed to be spelled 'Mei', only because the pronounciation (sp?) is correct...
no that is how it is spelled. even the closed caption set for hearing impaired spell it that way. so the spelling is right.
Okay...
One: I disagree with the entire ATLA crew when they say that it is spelled 'Mai' (I will explain why here in a sec).
Two: Closed Captioning doesn't always work. I've used them, and it spells the names completely wrong. It says that 'Hakoda' is 'Koda', etc.
Okay...now I will explain why 'Mai' is wrong.
In Japanese (which is where most of the names are from), the 'a' sound isn't pronounced the way it is in America. It is pronounced like the 'a' in 'father', and the vowel is pronounced like the 'i' in 'machine'.
So, if you put 'a' and 'i' together, they make a 'y' sound. So, put an 'm' in front of that, and it sounds like 'my'...which is NOT how her name is said.
Now, the 'e' voewl in Japanese is pronounced like the 'e' in 'prey'. If you add it all up...'M', 'e', and 'i' together sound like 'May' (listen close when you say it), which IS how her name is pronounced.

And I'd like to say one thing...
