The Homecoming.

The blonde haired child stared, but politely, at the baby beside her. The awkward space inbetween them seemed to evaporate, making the two young beings feel cramped and uncomfortable. Despite their youngness, especially the Soul's, both children could detect the tension in the air, and if they knew the saying, would have said it could have been cut with a knife. The Tale was older than Ophelia, the Soul, but she was the newcomer. Almond shaped eyes gazed at her eerily, two feline ears twitching nervously at her presence. This was not good.

"Phee, this is Lyra. She's your.." Jamie's voice trailed off uneasily. Okay, so maybe Ophelia was too young to understand what a sister was, but the mother was not any more comfortable using the term. And plus, Lyra would understand and that may make her even more tensed, the poor girl was already in a completely strange situation. Without more hesitation, she continued. "Lyra will be living with us now, at home. Lyra, this is Ophelia."

A small smile emerged from Lyra's mouth, the corners only just raising. Blonde strands of hair escaped from behind her ears, falling gently and softly into her eyes, and were presently tucked back.

Jamie sighed lightly, closing the car door and moving to the driver's seat. The journey home was silent and strange, with Ophelia continuing to stare with reflective eyes at Lyra, and Lyra sitting quietly huddled up in the corner of the car.

Fitting In.

Crystal eyes firmly glazed over, shiny yet dull, a single tear forming reluctantly to fall down one soft cheek. Lyra glared somberly at her new surroundings, this odd, large house full of doors and corridors and snaking passages that led to.. heck knows where they led to. There were shiny things, though, and that was atleast a distraction to take her thoughts away from this horrible place she had come to live in. Paintings and ornaments, photos. But Lyra didn't look at the photos, alot of them contained images of her. That horrible little feline, slightly younger than Lyra, but with the most irritating.. everything. In her opinion, anyway. Her friend wasn't too high on the Tale's friendship list either, his scary little wings flapping violently.. Lyra cut off. Jamie was nice though. That was a relief, and following her around seemed like the safest idea, then the brat or her friend couldn't torment her as easily, for mummy would give them a row. Mummy, yes.

"Lyra, it's time for lunch. Anything particular you'd like, sweetie?" The reassuring voice sliced through the child's thoughts, not that she mined. It was actually quite welcome. But.. lunch. That means they'd all be at the table. Images of Ophelia and Cole flashed through her mind, conjuring up horrible circumstances that could happen. "Narnarnars.." She whispered, more to herself than her mother. Lyra was not known for her speaking, and preferred to let other's do it for her, despite Jamie's attempts to get her to have short and 'sweet' conversations with Ophelia, not that the Soul knew many words anyway. So, it was all pointless according to the Tale. Speaking was useless.

"Bananas, sweetie? Not narnars. I don't think we have any left, Ophelia had the last for breakfast."

Surprise surprise. The child shrugged loosly, pattering ever so lightly into the kitchen after the woman. Hoisting herself up on one of the wooden dining chairs, Lyra sighed loudly and rested her head on the placemat. Faint screams and squeals lingered on the floor above, soon accompanied by the annoying sound of tiny feet storming around, and then as usual slowed down for the rampage to make their way down the stairs. Lyra had perfected the stairs, but then again she was a child and not a little toddler. Feather boy or feline brat, who first? Hair swished as the Tale turned to answer her question, but it was neither of the Souls. Marissa, mummy's friend who lived with her. Marissa was nice, but also had a liking for the tormentors.

"Hey Jams, be a doll and make lunch for Coley too? I need to pop out, the little monsters scribbled on Ophelia's door and we're clean out of that cleaning spray." The purple-haired woman chirruped, shaking her head comically at Lyra. "Hey there sweets, how's my little blondey doing?"

Lyra winced uneasily, managing a faint hearted smile, only just upturning the corners of her mouth. Jamie shook her head too, listening for the pattering feet of the two toddlers. "Sure thing, does he eat soup?" She said in reply to her flatmate's question. Marissa nodded and scoffed. "He'll eat almost anything, greedy little thing." So she left, and for a split second the kitchen was once again quiet apart from the rhythmic sound of Jamie stirring soup in a pan. But then they came. The child closed her eyes as the screaming got louder. Soon enough, the toddlers were in the kitchen and.. everywhere. Ophelia went straight for Jamie, catapulting into her legs and wrapping chubby arms around them, to squeeze them tightly and giggle stupidly. Cole went for Lyra, waddling up to the edge of her chair and giving a toothy smile, making grabby hands at her scarf. Lyra edged away, hastily pulling her scarf out of the Soul's reach. No mucky fingerprints on her precious scarf.

"Heyyyy sweeties! Ready for lunchums, I see. SIT." Jamie commanded playfully, ruffling Ophelia's defined and shining auburn locks. Cole understood and peeled away from Lyra, making his way to the seat opposite her. For the kitten, it wasn't as simple for she didn't know the word.. sit? Lyra rolled and lowered her eyes, hoping to not catch the attention of her sister. Ophelia soon caught on and toddled to the table to copy Cole. "Pheely, why don't you sit beside Lyra today?" The woman said, giving the soup one last stirring. The Soul stared blankly and proceeded to make her way to the seat next to Cole.

Great, now both of them are opposite.

The clattering of bowls and spoons soon welcomly filled the air, so the little 'uns were distracted and once again Lyra was safe. Jamie collected two smaller bowls for the Souls, and a normal sized one for Lyra. Same with the utensils. The soup was poured and it was all quiet. Everyone sipped peacefully, and Jamie made herself a sandwich.

Lyra stared and sighed sadly. So this was what it was like to live in the Painted Souls HQ.
