..The Beginning..

((Unfortunately, part of this has been lost to the mists of time.))

Brenner
Awed, Brenner watched the "stars" descend. The tome bursting into flame startled her out of her stupor and she leapt aside with a cry. She stood pressed against the wall, shocked, wondering if she should try to run and get help.

But as suddenly as it had started, the fire vanished. The lights came back on, and the study seemed exactly as it had before... except for one tiny difference. Not quite believing her eyes, Brenner stepped forward.

A strange child, part snake and part human, lay on the table top, clutching a pillow in his arms. She looked at him, transfixed. It did not even occur to her to be afraid.

"Hey there, little guy," she said softly, reaching out a hand.

The snake boy reached up a chubby hand and patted her wrist. It was hard to tell, but it looked like he was smiling. Brenner smiled back, charmed. She gently scooped him up, holding him against her chest. He snuggled into her, tightly clutching his pillow. It was only then that she noticed the new book on the table.

_Tall_Tales_
Coincidences, or just plain old perfect timing, the Study's door unlocked and opened. In came Huni, carrying a tray of coal that she tried to pass off as brownies. She blinked at the sight of Brenner, then shot the original Tome on the floor a nasty glare.

"Oh sure, let other people write in you but not me." she growled at the leather bound book lying innocently at the foot of the writing table. Her expression softened as she turned her gaze to Brenner and the snake-like child. "Don't tell me, the book asked you a question and you answered it." she observed with a grin.

Brenner
Brenner was so absorbed with the baby in her arms that she didn't even notice the door opening. She turned with a start when Huni spoke.

"Looks like it," she said, smiling down at the child. "Has this happened before?"

The child blinked owlishly at Huni and reached a hand towards her... or towards the scorched brownies?

Lemonlime
Lemonlime absolutely, positively was beaming. She advanced forward to congratulate Brenner, and that was her intention, really it was, but was a little preoccupied when Nalira latched onto her leg and started gnawing. She let out a wail, grabbing her by the scruff and placing her on the ground. She raised an eyebrow, moving over to Brenner.

"Congratulations. He is absolutely wonderful, and so adorable."

Nalira was excited to see a new Tale, and started jumping up and down with glee. She moved forward to Brenner, tugging gently on her leg, looking up at her, beaming. She watched as the dull light cascaded down Brenner's features, grinning and falling onto her back, giggling uncontrollably.

_Tall_Tales_
At Lemon's arrival, Huni just grinned as she turned back to Brenner, "Yep, and I doubt you'll be the last. This room has a mind of its own, sometimes it even locks me out." she laughed. "Let's move out of the Study though, and into the shop's front." she suggested.

Nyxa
Nyxa wandered into the shop, Olivia attached to her hip. The orange-haired baby was having a conversation with herself, babbling incessantly about something serious according to her facial expression.

Peering around, she noticed that there seemed to be a group of folks grouped in the study so she naturally went in. Olivia continued her conversation; it even sounded as if she was answering herself.

Brenner
Brenner grinned down at Nalira. "She's so sweet! Thanks Lemon." Holding the baby tightly, she picked up the tome and nodded towards Huni. "Alright, let's go before anything else strange happens..."

Seeing Nyxa enter, she beamed. "Hey, Nyxa! I can't believe all of you have gotten babies from here as well."

The baby in Brenner's arms lost interest in Huni's brownies and stared down at Nalira. Her sharp teeth looked scary. He wasn't sure whether he should be frightened or curious. Oh well, she was pretty far away... and this big person was protecting him. "Wa," he said firmly, sticking his tongue out.

_Tall_Tales_
"If this keeps up, I think Syrie and I will have to renovate the shop." Huni chuckled, escorting everyone out of the Study. She lowered the tray of burnt brownies onto a table and beaming proudly "Help yourselves." she instructed as she went upstairs to check on Linneas.

Nyxa
Nyxa beamed at Brenner, rushing over to look at the newest addition to the Tale family. "Oh, he's precious, Bren!" Grinning at Lemon, she waved before turning her grin to Nalira. "Hey, cutie!"

Olivia caught sight of Ezra first, her babbling ceasing for a moment. She wiggled her eyebrows thoughtfully before screeching a random jumble of words, none of which made sense. Extending a chubby hand she wiggled her fingers at the snake baby in a wave.

Soon after, Liv noticed Nala on the floor. Bouncing excitedly in Nyxa's arms, Olivia wanted down! Her best pal was on the floor!

Lemonlime
Nalira grinned, crawling foward towards Nyxa. She tugged on her leg, trying to climb up to greet her Best Friend. She whined, falling onto her back, tears streaking her face as she kicked and threw her fists around.

"L'yvia, L'yvia!"

Brenner
Brenner pulled up a chair and sat by the table, the baby on her lap. "He's so weird... but so adorable!" She propped up the new tome on the table and flipped through it. The baby gurgled interestedly, looking at the tome that had appeared with him. It was blank but for a name written on the first page in elegant black script.

"Ezra. Is that your name?" Bren asked.

The snake child opened his mouth in a funny almost-smile. "Wa," he said agreeably.

Brenner smiled, hugging him. "I don't know what just happened back there, but I think I'm glad it did."

Ezra snuggled up with the woman he had decided was his new mommy. The other big people in the room didn't seem very interesting, but there were two more babies. He vaguely sensed that they were like him. The scary one on the floor wasn't paying attention to him anymore, so he looked up at the one being held. She was loud, and a little bit alarming as well. He curled around his pillow and watched anxiously.

Nyxa
Nyxa nodded, "I was frightened at first, but well. Olivia's grown on me." That being said, Nyxa grinned once more down at Nalira, promptly plopping Olivia down on the floor.

Olivia cooed at Nalira, concerned by the other baby's cries. She was visibly torn between the snake baby and Nalira. "Nalaaaa." Olivia's face was straigh at she lifted a finger up to her lips, "Shhhh!" This was, no doubt, something Olivia had seen Nyxa do before.

Lemonlime
"Yes, as was I. But Nalira is wonderful, despite the constant gnawing, and biting." Lemon smiled, wrapping an arm around Nyxa.

Nalira stopped immediatly, grinning and leaping upon Olivia, grinning and nibbling on her ear. She looked up at the other Tale, tilting her head. It was rather strange, elongated and multicoloured. She frowned, moving from Olivia and staring up at the creature.

"Oooo." She exclaimed, pointing at the Snake infant

Brenner
Brenner chuckled. "I hope this one doesn't chew on me... it looks like he might have some pretty sharp teeth."

Ezra peered down at the two Tales. Suddenly, the toothy one looked at him. He put his hands over his eyes, burying his face in the pillow. One of the two Tales made a noise. He risked a look. She had moved even closer!

Trusting his new mom to save him, Ezra raised his head to look at the Tale. "Whuh!" he said loudly, coiling his long tail tightly around him.

Lemonlime
Lemon beamed, shaking her head softly. "Just watch it, she'd more likely gnaw on your leg. It doesn't hurt, that much .." She said, smiling down at her little one.

Nalira let out a little sound, taken aback. She'd never had anyone afraid of her, not at all. She moved away, her lip wobbeling softly. She looked at her toes, waving them rom side to side slowly, sighing heavily.

Sniff.

Nyxa
Olivia gurgled happily, her attention once more captured by the interesting looking Tale that the lady held. Scooting over to Brenner, Olivia tugged on the woman's pants with a little questioning croon. "Liv'ya, Liv'ya!"

Brenner
Brenner smiled down at Nalira and Olivia. "You're such cuties!"

Ezra eyed the scary Tale suspiciously. Somehow she didn't seem so frightening anymore. "Woog?" he inquired.

He pulled back a little, startled, when the loud Tale scooted over to him and began tugging at his mom's pantleg. "Eee!" he scolded.

Lemonlime
Nalira looked up, grinning toothily at her, clapping her hands together and moving cautiously towards the Snake-like infant, tilting her head.

"Bah?"

Nyxa
Nyxa yawned and glanced at her watch, eyes widening in surprise as she noticed the time. Swooping Olivia up, much to the baby's dismay, she offered a hurried farewell to the other women. "It's been fun but I've got to get home. Both of you call me sometime and we'll have a playdate for sure!" Olivia screeched her goodbye and the duo was soon on their way home.

Brenner
Ezra, throwing caution to the winds, leaned over from Brenner's lap to look at Nalira. She wasn't really that scary looking. She did have funny ears, though. He pointed at her ears. "Boo?"

Brenner waved at the departing couple. "See you!"

Ezra mimicked her wave and returned to studying Nalira.

Lemonlime
She grinned, moving closer still and pawing at Brenner's leg, tilting her head softly. She looked up at Ezra, beaming and mimicking his wave, falling onto her back to have a clear view of him, bubbling up inside.

A new person to meet. Wonderful!

Brenner
Brenner, glancing at her watch, gasped. "Wow, it's late. I've got to get home! We'll be seeing you, Lemon!" She stood, gathering up Ezra and his Tome, and hurried out of the shop.

Ezra let out an annoyed wail as he was scooped up. Just when he'd decided he liked the funny Tale! He waved back at her over Brenner's shoulder, sticking out his tongue again. Oh well, maybe they could play later.

Lemonlime
Lemon waved softly, grinning. "Yes, we definatly will be seeing eachother." She smiled, gently gathering Nalira up in her arms and sitting on the ground, hugging her close.

Nalira waved too, and felt herself being held close to her Guardian, sighing heavily and pouting. She had really wanted to make friends tonight. She let out an annoyed groan, crossing her arms over her chest.

..Meet and Greet..

((Olivia = Good, Tybalt = Not so good.))

The door to the Stationary Shop opened with a tinkle, and Brenner slipped inside. She yawned widely, casting about for a place to set down her packages. Spotting a convenient table, she shuffled over quickly and set down a pile of books and a bag of... groceries? with a thump. Her last, most important package wriggled impatiently, snorting. With a weary smile, Brenner set the tightly bundled baby on the floor. She collapsed into a chair, looking around for company, as Ezra crawled around her legs happily.

Moments later, the door opened again, this time revealing a woman carrying a dark object with a brightly colored head. In reality, Tybalt was just wrapped in his flag; he hadn't let the damn thing go since he came from the book not a few days prior. His hat was perched precariously on his head, his large blue eyes peeking out from over Inle's shoulder. Inle sat him down near the other baby, and his clawed feet clenched and unclenched out of lack of anything better to do. Tybalt just kind of stared at the other baby, not having seen a creature like it before. As he pointed at Ezra and said, "Wha?" Inle sat down in a chair across from Brenner.

Brenner smiled faintly at Inle, waving. "Hey, haven't seen you in a while." Her eyes widened as she noticed the funny creature Inle was carrying. "Whoa. That's an... interesting looking little dude! Did you get him from here, too?"

Ezra looked up at the two strangers, curious. One was another big person, not very interesting... but there was someone like him, too! He was wearing some funny blanket and had funny big feet. Ezra slithered closer to the strange baby and settled down a short distance away. " 'ho!" he said cheerfully, waving at the new baby.

Inle nodded. "Apparently I can't leave the house anymore without acquiring a new child. I think I'm just gonna stay at home from now on and have some of the older kids run my errands for me, just to be safe. Pavel says hi, by the way. Is that a snake?" she rushed out, her thought patterns seeming more erratic than normal.

Tybalt continued staring, unconcerned about whether or not it was rude. Ezra confused him; where were his feet? "'Hoy," he said after a moment before pointing once more. "Wha?" he said again.

Brenner smiled at the mention of Pavel. "Say hi to them all for me." She yawned again and covered her mouth. "Sorry, long day. I have that problem with pets... I accumulate them."

Ezra made a face at the brightly colored baby, sticking his tongue out. "Ezzy," he said proudly, patting his chest. He pointed at the other baby, making an inquisitive noise.

Inle made a noise of what might've been assent or agreement, or a mix of the two; in any case, she was certainly in the same boat.

Tybalt blinked in nigh-astonishment. Did that...whatever it was just make a face at him?! He couldn't be sure, but in any case he certainly wasn't going to drop his guard around a relative stranger. "Capn Tybo," he replied, his tone borderline haughty.

Ezra waved at "Capn Tybo", sitting back on his tail. For some reason, he was getting the feeling that the strange baby was a little ... cold towards him. Hmmmf. Not quite sure what to do, he idly thumped the tip of his tail against the floor. Tybo's feet were fascinating... but he wasn't going to let the standoffish stranger see him get all distracted and silly. Ezra stared back at Tybo, sticking out his tongue once more.

How DID the other boy get around? Did it have something to do with his tail-and-no-legs? Ezzy didn't seem to mind not having legs...and why did that boy keep sticking his tongue out at him? Was it some strange form of communication? With sapphire eyes focused on Ezzy, he stuck his black tongue out as well.

Adrienne had promised Nyxa that she'd try to get Olivia into the Tall Tale shop, and it looked as if today was that day. Slipping inside, she held the babbling baby close to her, catching sight of Inle. "Inleee! I hoped you would be here. I promised Nyxa I'd bring Liv by here." She grinned and plopped Olivia down on the floor near the other babies.

Olivia instantly caught sight of Tybalt and Ezra, gleefully clapping her chubby hands together. Scooting closer on her bum, she instantly reached out grabby hands for Tybo's pretty feathers before her attention was grabbed by Ezra's tail. In a very ADD-like manner, Livvie instantly dove for Ezra's tail, cooing softly to it.

Brenner waved to the new arrivals, calling out a cheerful hello.

Ezra laughed when the strange boy stuck out his tongue. Maybe he would be a funny playmate after all. The appearance of yet more new people distracted him from his new acquaintance. He turned, just in time to squeak out a greeting before he and Tybo were attacked by Olivia. "Weeek!" he squealed, putting his hands over his eyes as she latched on to his tail.

He laughed? Ezzy...laughed at him?! Tybalt played his game and got LAUGHED at?! The pissed off parrot immediately withdrew his tongue and was about to give Mr. Legless a piece of his infantile mind when the ringing of the door bells caught his attention. His already large eyes widened further at the sight of just who was coming through the door, and he immediately began looking for something to defend himself with. His anxiety abated as Olivia's target changed, and he found himself somewhat appeased to see that Ezra was the target of the rainbow terror's attack. Tybalt allowed himself an uncharacteristic chuckle at the other boy's distress.

Inle merely quirked a brow as Dri walked in with Olivia. "Heeey, kiddo. I didn't know your mom was the proud mother of a book baby. We should form a club, or something. Like Operah, only not as dumb. How is your mom, anyway?"

Adrienne shrugged slightly, "She's on some island somewhere, it's cool. And yeah, she's got a book baby, too." Dri's voice lowered to whisper as she spoke, "But this one is a little.. ah.." She twirled a finger in circles near her temple, indicating that Olivia was a little nutty.

Olivia was in heaven. After grabbing a handful of Ezra-tail, she promply looped an arm around Tybalt's foot. "Liv'ya, haha." She spoke to Ezra's tail as if expecting a response before giving Tybalt's foot a stern glare, little eyebrows lowering in a baby-frown.

Though startled, Ezra thought he recognized the wild new baby. He didn't mind her playing with his tail, everyone seemed to want to do it. "Liv!" he said, patting her solemnly on the head. She seemed to be going for Tybo's foot now. Ezra frowned. He wanted to see Tybo's weird scaley feet himself, but he was getting the feeling that the other boy wasn't very friendly. "Oh!" he said sternly to Olivia, rolling his eyes at Tybo. There was no telling what the jumpy parrot might do if she annoyed him!

Tybalt's claws opened and closed, as if they yearned for something to latch onto. Olivia's arm was a bit out of range, though, as it was on top of his foot, so it appeared he was stuck with her for the moment. His wings folded themselves tightly to his back and Tybalt clenched his flag tighter as he looked down at Olivia, saying, "No feters!" in a commanding voice.

Olivia cooed softly at Ezra, rubbing her cheek sweetly against his tail. "Ezra, Liv'ya." She nodded before giggling wildly, turning her attention back to the brightly colored Tale she'd latched onto, blinking wild violet eyes up at him. "Fete, yes. Liv'ya fete," she pointed to her own, releasing Ezra's tail for a moment. "No fete," pointing at Ezra's tail. Finally she screeched at Tybalt's feet, eyes wide. "FETE."

Glaring suspiciously at Tybalt, Ezra swished the tip of his tail. Feet? He looked down at his tail thoughtfully. Even though he knew most people had feet, he had never really wondered why he himself didn't. Oh well, his tail was prettier than feet anyways.

"Fete no!" he called to Olivia, pointing at Tybalt's frighteningly sharp claws. He didn't trust the parrot, and those claws looked painful. Besides, Tybalt was weird. Ezra stuck his tongue out at the boy again.

Feet? Of COURSE he had feet! What kind of person didn't have feet, other than weirdos like Ezra and his sister Delphina? "No fete!" he said, pointing at Ezra's obvious lack thereof. "Haha, no fete." Tybalt returned the tongue-sticking-outage, opening and closing the claws of his unoccupied foot at Ezra.

Olivia didn't like the tone that Tybalt had taken on, and she released his foot as if disgusted by it. A thunderous expression contorted her small features as she shook a chubby hand in his face, standing up for her pal Ezra. "NO. Bad!" Crooning to Ezra, she patted his scaled shoulder, an endearing look on her face. Olivia scowled at Tybalt, promptly reaching out and yanking on his feathers.

"Wo!" Ezra exclaimed unhappily, startled by the sudden twist things had taken. He might not like Tybalt much, but he didn't want everyone to get in an argument over feet, of all things. He pulled at Olivia's elbow, hoping she would release Tybalt.

Tybalt's jaw dropped, more in shock and anger than in pain. That traitorous little wench! Pretending to be friendly and then immediately turning on him. Pah, this was why he didn't like other people. And hadn't he expressly told her NOT to touch his feathers? His blue eyes took on an icy tone as they narrowed at Olivia, and his arms flailed out, one managing to smack her right upside the head. "NO FETERS!" he screamed in a very angry tone. It might have escalated from there, but Inle moved quickly from her chair to the pile of babies on the floor. She managed to detach Olivia's hand from Tybalt's feathers with minimal damage before scooping him up.

"Say sorry!" she said to him.

"No!" he replied stubbornly, looking at her as if promising grave consequences if she dared to press the issue.

"You little..." she trailed off with a sigh. She needed to get out of there, so she could burst out laughing at her technicolor terror. "We're going home guys, sorry." With that, she settled Tybalt against her and walked to the door. Over Inle's shoulder, Tybalt stuck his tongue out at the group once more, and remained that way until they were through the door and out of sight.

Tybalt smirked in a satisfied manner to himself. If nothing else, those babies would learn NOT to mess with the dread Captain Tybalt.

Adrienne watched the goings on with a mix of humor and horror, gaping after Inle as she left with Tybalt. Slowly she turned to watch Olivia, stunned for a moment before picking the baby up and moving for the door. "Night, you two. I should probably get Liv home and make sure she's okay."

Olivia was slightly taken aback after being decked upside the head, lower lip wobbling as she fought tears. Before Dri scooped her up, she pressed a wet, sloppy kiss to Ezra's cheek, waving 'bye-bye' to him as she was carted away by the Kuatalmot girl.

Bewildered and upset, Ezra watched the two Tales and their companions leave. "Nyy!" he called after Olivia, waving. Brenner called goodbye to the two women and their charges and then scooped Ezra up onto her lap. "Mamaaah," he said sadly, not sure how to explain what had happened.

"It's okay, kid," Brenner said bracingly, hugging him. "I'm sure you guys will get to be friends." She glanced at her watch and sighed. "I guess we should be getting home ourselves, Ezra!" Brenner bundled Ezra up once more and carefully hefted him in one arm, her books and packages in the other. Ezra wrapped his arms around her neck and looked over her shoulder as they left the Store. Oh, well. It was nice to see Olivia again. He would find a way to make Brenner take him more often.

..Notes on Ezra..

((A 'dear diary', hastily written on a cafe napkin))

Well, this new kid of mine sure is funny. He's all snakey-looking, for one thing. As far as I can tell he's pretty much a normal kid underneath all those scales. I tried feeding him some mice from the pet store, but he thought they were supposed to be pets and promptly freaked out when I asked if he wanted them for dinner. Not exactly nature, red in tooth and claw.

I've been looking through snake books and Ezra most resembles some type of ball python. That's a kind of African snake. So far Ezra doesn't seem to be very snakelike beyond his appearance, so I dunno if that means anything or not.

Although he doesn't have legs, he sure doesn't have any problem scooting around. He balances up on his tail, kinda like a naga. It's a good thing his scales are so tough, because he keeps scraping them up going over the ground! I have to help him wash his belly off every night.

Ezra's appearance is a little freaky, but the kid himself is as nice as can be. Quiet, polite -- too shy, if you ask me. I was kind of alarmed at first, thinking he might behave just like a giant snake, but Ezra's all kid at heart. A real softie of a kid, too.

This library research sure hasn't helped me much. I know what species of snake Ezra looks like, but he's not a snake at all on the inside, it seems. So how does that help? At least I've learned a bit more about snake care -- Ezra will probably have to shed his skin, at least, and that's a good thing to know about.

Well, I'm out. Maybe I'll log some more library time tomorrow, but probably not. This hasn't been very helpful.

..RP in Progress..

((Ezra meets Vidya.))

Ezra had been away from the Stationary Store for a long time, but he still recognized it almost immediately. Held snug in Polecat's arms, he clapped his hands and thumped his tail against her ribs in excitement, making her wince.

Polecat paused to kick the mud from her traveling boots before entering the shop. She was a little nervous about having been gone so long. She had heard that there were many new Tales and Authors. Probably no one remembered her or Ezra. Oh, well. Time to face the music. She opened the door with a sigh and stepped over the threshold.

Ezra didn't know anything about any new Tales, but he had been lonely. Forgetting his natural shyness -- and his tendency to keep his mouth shut in the company of strangers -- he grinned broadly at the strange bluish girl waiting in the shop.

Not gifted with Ezra's excellent night vision, Polecat's eyes took a bit longer to adjust to the dimmer light. She started when she saw the strange girl. "Oh! Sorry, I didn't know anyone was here."

Vidya wouldn't remember either of them; but that was because she'd never met either of them to begin with. The nymph was checking out some of the journal-esque books when she heard the door open, only this time, she purposely looked over her left shoulder instead of her right. She had something in her possession now that allowed her to 'see' through her blind left eye, and she was trying to use it as often as possible to learn exactly how to use it.

Judging by what she saw, which was only the smoke-like whisps of aura that surrounded everything, she took a guess that there was one adult-ish person, one that was either holding a strange package or some form of kid. She could see no pure shapes, nor could she see colour, aside from the various colours the auras took, anyway. Having taken this guess as to what her once blind eye 'saw', she felt it were safe to turn and fully face the two, to use her good right eye just to see just how accurate she was.

Lo and behold, there WAS an older person there! Well, older than her anyway. And she was partially right about what that person held; it looked kind of like a snake, but it was pretty! It took the blue girl a minute to notice that the woman had started upon seeing her. With a giggle, Vidya waved her hands infront of her.

"Oh, thats alright! Hello...Welcome to the shop!" Then, the girl bowed a bit. "I'm Vidya! Whats your names?" Her gaze went back to the creature in the woman's arms...it was just so neat-looking!

There were plenty of odd-looking people to be found in Gaia, but Polecat was pretty sure the girl was a Tall Tale. She certainly looked too young to be an Author, anyways. "Nice to meet you, Vidya. I'm Polecat, and this little dude is Ezra," she said, smiling. "We've been away for a long time... it'll be good to catch up." She sighed again, looking at Ezra. "Ezra's been lonely, too."

Ezra ignored the conversation, focusing on the girl. The urge to bury his face in his hands was creeping up on him, but he ignored it. The girl seemed nice, and better yet, she seemed similar to him somehow. He didn't remember much about the Study, but the girl seemed like she belonged here somehow.

He smiled at her again, careful to keep his mouth shut this time. Ezra knew he was different-looking, and didn't like the way people sometimes seemed frightened of him. His sharp teeth had alarmed people in the past.

"Well, Its nice to meet you too! Oh, so you two've been here before?" She blinked at the both of them, her dual eyesight making her vision work really strange; her left pheripheral vision was black with the auras, her right pheripheral vision was in complete colour and shape, and in between were a mix of the two, much like a light spectrum. "Hm...I like that name...Ezra. Its neat-sounding! Its perfect for a neat-looking boy!" She stated out of nowhere, giggling happily. Now, she was taking a guess as to what the boy-creature was in Polecat's arms.

"Then are you a tale, by chance?" She coo'd softly as she leaned her head to the side, looking more at the obviously shy boy then at his author. If he really were a tale, that would explain the aura he was giving off, and why it looked different than anything she'd seen yet.

Polecat smiled as Ezra, apparently understanding Vidya's question, nodded so. "Yeah, he is," she said proudly. "He's a heavy one, too." She carried Ezra over to a convenient chair and set him down, ignoring his indignant yelp.

The snake-like boy pushed himself up into the best standing position he was capable of. He curled his heavy tail around himself and folded his arms, flicking his tongue at Polecat in disapproval. He was more interested in the blue girl -- Vidya? -- though, and turned his gaze back on her. A few surreptitious tongue-flicks told him that her scent was definitely different from others'. He was almost positive that she was a Tale like himself.

"Hi," he said solemnly, blinking.

"Oh! Thats so cool! I've never seen you before! I'm a Tale too..!" The nymph giggled out, pointing at herself and giving the pair an eyeless smile. At the mention of Ezra being heavy, however... "But...he doesn't look heavy..." Vidya commented, blinking curiously. Then again, Vidya didn't know if snake-like people were supposed to be heavy; mainly because she'd never seen a snake-like person before. She watched the interaction between tale and author in silence, that curious look still on her face.

"Heya!" She coo'd out when he finally spoke, as short as his sentence was. Taking a few steps closer to the chair Ezra was in, she eventually flopped onto her knees infront of him; for some reason, she hated when she was talking to someone while hovering over them. That was just rude. She preferred to be at eye-level, or at least close to, when talking; which was, most of the time, a very hard thing to do; she seemed to be shorter than most people, even the ones her age.

"How're you?" Vidya asked politely, leaning her head to the side. Her white gaze strayed curiously over his scales, finding them absolutely fascinating. "I like the patterns on your scales...Yellow and Black look good together!" And there she went, doing her first-meeting ritual of telling the other what she liked about them from the start. "Uhm...I really don't mean to sound weird or anything...but...Could I pet your tail? I've never touched scales before..." She smiled sheepishly and her headwings twitched for the same reason, but she was being completely honest.

Polecat smiled at Vidya's obvious interest in Ezra. He was, after all, her pride and joy... even if he was a little bit odd.

The blue-skinned girl's outgoing manner startled Ezra a bit, but she did seem kind. "I'm short but 'm allll mussel," he said, twitching his tailtip. "That's why 'm heavy."

He smiled at Vidya's compliment and question. Even though plenty of people reacted to his unusual physique with alarm or disgust, the people that liked him usually got around to asking about his scales sooner or later. "Thanks!" he said, a bit embarrassed. "Your skin's pretty too. I've never seen anyone blue before!" He uncurled his tail slightly, offering the end to Vidya. " 'n sure you can touch my tail. 'M not slimy," he said, reassuringly.

Vidya really was very pretty. Ezra liked meeting 'different' looking people... and Vidya's blue and silver was definitely different! He wondered if there were other Tales as strange as Vidya and himself. One thing was for sure, it was good to be back home.

..A Fighter?..

((Ezra meets Ying.))

Ying snuck into the shop, casting a glance over her shoulder before slipping inside.

Excellent. No one saw.

And now, today, she was truly a woman, for she had arrived at the stationary store all by herself!

And Hakugen could stick THAT in her bowl of wheaties and eat it.

Ezra was sprawled out on the floor of the Shop, idly doodling in his coloring book. His mom Polecat had dropped him off while she ran some errands. A bit irresponsible, maybe, to leave such a young one on his own, but Ezra wasn't the type to get into trouble. And Polecat was very trusting of the powers of the Shop to watch out over her baby.

The boy looked up inquisitively as the strange Tale slipped into the Shop. She looked almost normal, for a Tale. He waved in greeting, giving her one of his shy smiles.

Perhaps she wasn't as "not caught" as she thought she was.

"Uh," Ying stammered awkwardly.

Ezra blinked at the girl's lack of response. She seemed to be as shy as he was. He waved again, somewhat awkwardly.

"Hi," he said softly. " 'm Ezra."

"Ying," Ying answered quickly, pointing at herself with her thumb. "I came here all by myself." A nod for emphasis. "I'm grown-up."

"M' mom leff me here," Ezra said, gesturing vaguely with a crayon. He frowned doubtfully. "Dunno if 'm growed up."

Ying studied Ezra thoughtfully, and then shrugged. "Dunno either. I'm grown up 'cuz I say so. I can go wherever I want by myself! I don't care what Haku says!"

The boy smiled again, amused by Ying's enthusiasm. "I can be growed up too then!" He thumped his tail on the floor once for emphasis.

Ezra cocked his head to one side, studying the girl. Even though she did seem pretty normal, she had that slight... something or other... to her scent that meant she was a Tale. She had a very cool stick-thing too.

"What're you looking at?" Ying asked quietly, tapping her staff on the floor impatiently.

Was Ying angry at him? Ezra couldn't really tell. "Uhmm.. I was lookin at your stick," he said slowly.

"It's not a stick," Ying corrected haughtily. "It's a staff. Sticks are for poking. Staves are for fighting. This is MUCH better than a stick."

A pause. "...You can hold it if you want as long as you don't swing it."

Ezra blinked. "No, 's ok. I like coloring." His gaze returned to the stafe... stavv... whatever it was. "Why you wanna fight?" Ezra's face wasn't as mobile and expressive as the average boy's, but his expression of dismay was still fairly clear. "Fightin's no fun."

"I don't fight people," Ying argued. "I just practice with it. It's like a dance, you know? I'd show you but we're inside."

A pause.

"And when I do fight, it's so I can protect everyone. So there."

"Protect from who?" Ezra asked blankly. He remembered meeting a mean Tale or two a long time ago... but no one really bad. During his travels with Polecat, he'd been in a few scary situations, but they had never had to fight anyone.

Even practicing with that stick thing couldn't be fun. He wouldn't have fun pretending to hit people with a stick. And as for a dance... "I don't dance," Ezra said, looking down at his tail. "I don't got feets for it."

"That kinda thinking is bad. You think 'who am I gonna protect' and don't learn, and then something BAD happens and you can't do NOTHING." Ying leaned her staff against of the shelves and folded her arms. "If you're not prep... prepar... If you're not ready, THEN what're you gonna do? Nothing."

"Hmmm." Though annoyed that she called his thinking 'bad', Ezra thought she might have a point. Maybe. A small point.

"Well, maybe you're right a little," he said placatingly. "But I like makin things more. Anyway, if everyone tried to be nice, and didn't try to hit nobody with sticks, then there wouldn't be no fightin." He flicked his tongue in an unconcious gesture of disapproval.

Tired from all this philosophy, Ezra lowered himself back to the floor with a sigh and resumed coloring.

That caught Ying's interest. "Making things? Like what? I make robots."

Robots? Ezra looked up warily. "What's robots?" He bent his head to his coloring again. "I like makin models and things. I use to make things with blocks, but that's for babies. Now I build stuff with Legos."

"You know... robots." Ying frowned in thought. "Like... models that move! And go 'RAR' if you put a speaker in 'em."

Hmmm. Models that move. Ezra frowned, momentarily intrigued, and then shrugged. "I can pick up an' move models myself if I want. An' I can make em say RARR too." He smiled up at Ying, flashing his sharp teeth. "Anyway, I like em to stay still while I work on em!"

"Oh, they don't move until I tell 'em to," Ying answered. "One day, I'll bring the supertoaster, 'kay? But uh... I need to go home before someone notices I'm gone, 'kay? Talk to you later?"

Though a little disappointed, Ezra waved cheerfully enough. " 'K. Bye, Ying!" He picked up his crayon once more and bent to finish his picture, content to wait for Polecat's return.

..Tails and Scales..

((What's this, another reptilian Tale?))

Lance sat perched in the leafy branches of a tree, his wings twitching ever so slightly as his red eyes gazed morosly at the ground before him. His tail hung down over the branch he sat upon, and one leg dangled down the otherside. His arms rested on his other knee, and his chin upon his arms. His crimson eyes were shaded by his drooping eyelids, and Lance truly looked down in the dumps.

He'd agreed to come along to the playground just outsid of Barton with Dragonfly, because she had wanted to take Ethan and Leon out to play. Lance had been enjoying himself, until Leon and Ethan had decided that Lance was too weird to play with, and gone off to play with the other kids that were at the playground. They were all the same, compared to him. He was different... None of them were green, or had scales, or tails, or talon-esque toes... He'd heard them whispering about him, and thus he'd decided to discretely hide himself, until Dragonfly came to look for him. Dragonfly knew that he'd come as soon as she called, and though Lance didn't know it, Dragonfly knew exactly where the young knight was hiding. However, she knew that Lance needed his space for the moment.. She would talk to him later.

And thus, Lance was up in the tree, lonely, and aching, wishing he fit in too.

During his travels with Polecat, Ezra had spent a lot of time in the great outdoors. By now Ezra was much more comfortable in nature than with other people. He didn't look right, for one thing, and no matter how nice others were about it his difference still bothered him. People were kinder here in Gaia, where they were used to meeting not-entirely-humans, but outside of Gaia Ezra had encountered a lot of negative attention.

Polecat's plot to bring Ezra out of himself at the playground was pretty much a failure. Overwhelmed by the other children, Ezra slunk away from the main playground to the wooded area. Polecat was a little disappointed, but let him be... she was used to her charge's strange little wanderings.

The young snake-boy stood beneath a great tree, balanced on his tail. He sighed, looking at the playground. He had wanted to make friends, but there were just too many people. And most of them seemed to be ... well, normal. He couldn't use most of their playground equipment, and he felt stupid trying. Oh, well. He was used to entertaining himself.

Ezra made his way slowly through the trees, pausing to inspect the undergrowth carefully. Here and there he picked an interesting rock from the ground and put it in his shirt pocket.

Lance's ears wriggled at the sound of someone close by, and at first, he thought the shuffling of foliage was coming from above him. He looked up, and blinked through the pine needles, the only trees still with a form of green. Upon realizing that no creature would crawl through such painful spines, he looked down, and realized that there was something- no.. someone.. Someone scaley, with a tail, like him!

Lance couldn't help but scramble down then, falling the last few feet right out of the tree, and landing with an 'Oof!' on the ground below. He scrambled onto his feet, and looked bewildered towards Ezra, before remembering his manners, and bowing.

"Hi!" he exclaimed.

Ezra hissed in alarm as the other boy crashed down out of the tree. As the stranger straightened up, Ezra's urge to yell and slither off as fast as he could gave way to curiousity. The other boy looked a lot like him... scaled and tailed, with a long face that looked much more like Ezra's than any of the other children. He was a bit more "human" in shape, perhaps... he had feet, at least! But the resemblance still shocked Ezra.

"Hi," Ezra said slowly, staring at the other boy. He knew it was rude, but he couldn't help it! He had never seen someone as different as he was before.

Lance stood in stunned silence for several long moments as he got his first really good look at the other, and he couldn't help but grin.

"You look like me! I mean- We're different, yeah- but- I never saw anyone like... Well. Scaled! An'- Wow!"

Lance was obviously in awe from meeting the other, and he took a cautious step towards him.

"Are you cold blooded too? I get real tired when I'm cold- mom says it's cause I'm a dragon- and cold blooded- and- Just- Wow!"

Lance was obviously very excited.

"Forgive me! I keep forgetting my manners! M'name is Lance, a knight in training. I'm real keen on knowin' your name! I ain't ever seen someone so... similar,"

Even though Lance's fall from the tree had startled Ezra, it was hard to be intimidated by the dragon. Ezra smiled in spite of himself at the dragon's excitement.

"I never met someone so happy to see me," he said, swishing his tail through the fallen pine needles. " 'm Ezra." He paused thoughtfully, thinking over Lance's other questions. So the dragon was a knight? Ezra didn't know exactly what a knight was, but he had a vague idea that they rode around on horses rescuing people from castles. A knight sounded like a nice thing to be, anyways.

"I dunno what I'm in trainin to be, 'cept maybe an Ezra." Ezra grinned at the dragon, letting his teeth show. "I think I might've got cold blood, I don't like bein cold. My mom always keeps our house hot for me."

"Ezra," Lance replied, trying the other's name out for himself, and nodding, leaning back on his tail and resting his left hand on the hilt of his sword at his side.

"I'm just excited is all. Never seen someone scaled like- well, like us, y'know?" Lance replied. He was still excited, but he was quickly calming down, and becoming much more like himself.

Lance grinned back at the other's reply, before considering what the other said about Ezra's mother keeping the home warm for Ezra, and Lance nodded.

"My mum tries to keep the house warm- but our house is real big, so it's kinda hard. I'm always warm enough anyway," he nodded his head, and widened his grin, though fear was niggling into the dragon-tale's brain. Now that he'd found someone he could physicly relate to, he worried that maybe they wouldn't get along..

Ezra flicked his tongue in the direction of the playground -- a rude gesture, but he felt more reckless than usual. Besides, none of them could see him. "I guess it's better to be scaled sometimes than t'be all soft an squishy. B'sides, green an yellow look a lot cooler than pink an brown." The mental image of himself and Lance with normal, squishy, pink and brown skin made him laugh out loud before he caught himself.

Lance looked over to the playground to, and scowled a little.

"They can be real mean don't you think? Teasing and stuff? S'not nice," Lance murmered, crossing his arms over his chest as he watched the other small children run around and play togethor.

"I'd rather be green an yellow rather than pink and squishy any day," he nodded, before blinking as the other laughed, and raising an eyebrow, unable to help but smile from the other's laughter, "Wha's funny?"

Ezra smiled back, a little embarrassed. "I was jus' thinkin of what you an' me would look like without scales." He stuffed a hand into his pocket, pulled out a stone and started tossing it idly in the air. "I don't like teasin people. Better to be nice, that way every'n has fun," Ezra said, rolling his eyes at the playground.

"'s what were you doin up there?" he asked, tossing the rock from one hand to the other.

Lance blinked at the thought, before he too couldn't help but laugh, and grin.

"Tha's a real funny thought," he chuckled, smiling brightly to the other, before he really considered the image, and a peal of laughter escaped him.

He feel silent as the other spoke of teasing, and he nodded his head slowly in return.

"Teasing isn't nice at all. I don't like it one bit. It's not honorable, or noble at all. It's just- it's just wrong," he pouted just a little, memories of his own experiences with teasing flashing back to him, before he focused once more on Ezra.

"I was thinking," he replied, honestly enough, "And- And watching everyone else have fun,"

He shrugged a little, his tail swishing slightly behind him.

Though delighted that he'd managed to make his new acquaintance laugh, Ezra nodded seriously when Lance spoke of teasing. "I 'gree. It is wrong to make people feel bad for no reason." Ezra had endured his own share of teasing, and wasn't too impressed by the people who thought it was fun to tease.

He glanced over at the playground with a sigh. "I can't play most of their games, anyway. 'S hard to play monkeybars when you don't got feet," he said, casting a bemused look at his tail. "I'm used to entrer -- entertainin myself though." Ezra looked up at the dragon boy thoughtfully. "Maybe we could play a game ourselves."

..A Playdate at the Park..

((Onoway, Zayne, and Chai... oh my!))

The park had proven to be a nice place in the past. The best place she knew of to observe others, particularly other children playing. Being no good at games like tag and hide-and-seek herself, her sources of amusement came from watching those who could.

However, it was an unwelcomed discover to see what winter had cast over the land. The blanket of white might be pretty to most, but the only thing Onoway could see were all the dead (and very frozen) plants. The few that had survived didn't look too well off, and as no one appeared willing to do anything about she came up with a solution herself: plant transportation.

In other words, she'd dig them up, apparently with her hands, and take them back home, put them in her room and keep them alive until the evil that was cold left. Unfortunately, the task proved harder than originally intended with the ground as frozen as it was.

The young child knelt down aside the flower bed, and had almost successfully dug one up when an unlucky snowball zoomed past her, following soon after a child who stomped thoughtlessly on the near-rescued flower. Sighing heavily, she eyed the now dead thing with dissapointment. Hm...

Ezra was thoroughly miserable. Polecat had bundled him up in jackets and wrapped his tail in a blanket that made him look like a giant woolly sausage, but the awful cold still crept through.

He slithered slowly through the park, shivering wearily. How could those other kids play games in the snow? He couldn't imagine it. But then, he never really got in on other kids' games anyways.

In addition to chilling him to the bone, the terrible snow covered up the ground completely. He couldn't even look for rocks to add to his collection, or interesting animal tracks. Disappointed, Ezra slithered on through the snow.

Ahead of him, another child was kneeling in the snow, fooling around with some of the frozen plants. As cold as he was, it was difficult to summon up much enthusiasm about anything, but Ezra was interested. At least she wasn't running around screaming and throwing the dreaded "snowballs".

"Hey," he said, slithering up to stand beside her, balanced on his heavy tail. Normally he didn't initiate conversation, but he was too cold and bored to be shy. If she wasn't friendly, well, he could hardly feel worse than he already did. "Whatcha doing?"

Chailyn was still sick with a cold, though it had gotten much better. She was tired of being stuck inside and with some work had gotten to come to the park. She was bundled up in a jacket and even had on some snow pants. Her hands were hidden in her coat sleeves, the cold nipping through her gloves.

She toddled through the snow before adjusting her earmuffs. She looked around wrinkling her nose up at the kids throwing snowballs. That didn't seem fun at all. She turned her head spying two tales together away from the others. Curious, she made her way over to them.

"Hi, what are you two doing?" she asked gently.

Zayne wasn't crazy about snow. It wasn't the cold that bothered her, but the expanse of white. White was not on her list of favorite colors. It made her feel empty and blank.

Despite this open dislike of the substance, her Aunt had sent her out of them manor and told her not to return until at least an hour had passed. Without a watch, Zayne took this to mean until sundown. And so, she was in the park, dejectedly shuffling about in her usual ensemble of a bright purple jacket and a set of matching yellow hat and gloves.

In her wandering she noticed a crowd gathering in one area and veered in that direction. So long as they didn't throw things, she might just talk to them. Zayne pulled up behind Onoway, Ezra, and Chailyn and peeked into the group. Having caught the tail end of Chailyn's question, she idn't bother to voice her own. She just tried to look like she belonged there.

So many people arrived so suddenly, it made even Onoway a bit uneasy. It was harder when you didn't have a voice of your own to be in a crowd like this one. So, which should she use? Slyvester had allowed her his, but he was a boy, and it sounded odd. Her 'mother' was too angry, and her sister too quiet.

With a moments thought, she decided quiet was probably better than outraged or male, and so went with that. "I'm moving these flowers," she said in a soft voice, barely able to be heard above the howling winds passing through. "It's too cold out here for them. Unfortunately, it's not working very well. It's taking a very long time, and people are running past stepping on them."

Ezra, too, was startled by the arrival of so many other children. Normally he would have felt uncomfortable in the presence of so many "normal" looking strangers, but he was just too cold to care at the moment.

The words of the flower-girl made him squint dubiously. He could understand someone wanting to save the flowers... but it seemed like a waste of time. And it was so cold, too.

He gave a little wave to the others before turning back to the girl on the ground. "That's mean of 'em to step on the flowers. But how are you gonna save that many flowers, anyway?" He shivered, thinking of digging in the snow himself. If she asked, of course he would help her, but he certainly wasn't looking forward to it.

But then, there were the other children... if they offered first, he would look like a jerk. "I'll help you," he said, trying to keep his voice as upbeat as possible. "M'name's Ezra, by the way," he added, nodding to the other children. With a small sigh, Ezra rearranged himself so that he was closer to the ground, his tail curled tightly around his body to retain as much warmth as possible. He surveyed the dead and dying flowers without much hope.

Chailyn wasn't sure what to think of trying to move the flowers. She was curious about what Onoway planned to do with the flowers once she dug them up. She thought silently to herself for a moment before looking to Ezra and then at Zayne.

"I'm Chailyn," she started giving a smile to them. "What happens after you dig them up?" she asked. She was naturally curious about the girl's plan. "Maybe if we made a circle around the flowers we could keep people from stepping on them?" she suggested.

She really didn't know what to do. She figured she should help but it was hard to decide when she had no clue what Onoway was going to do. She looked at Ezra as he volunteered to help. If he was going to help, she could offer to help as well. "I'll help, too."

On one hand, Zayne didn't like doing work - but on the other hand, she could appreciate the effort to save something of color from the wasteland of snow. Besides, she certainly couldn't be the only one who didn't help.

"I'm Zayne," she said. Naming one's self seemed to be the thing to do. "I'll help too. We can't let all the color get covered up by the white. But we need somewhere warm to take the flowers."

She fumbled with her gloves, sticking them in her pocket, and then knelt by the others and eyed the flowers.

"Well, I figure if I'm unable to save them all, a difference will still be made," Onoway explained to Ezra. "You know, like the story about the starfish. Where the boy goes around the ocean throwing them back in the water." Such a good story. She prefered it over ones about princesses and dragons and things.

Her eyes moved rapidly around at the three, blinking but twice. Wow. Aside from her sister, she'd met only two other around her age. Who knew there were so many friendly ones, as opposed to those who ran around stepping on flowers?

"Thank you all," she said sincerely. "And, my name is Onoway." Motioning toward a large gathering of flowers near by, she said thoughtfully, "I suppose each of you could just try to get those out. Be careful of the roots, if you damage them, the flowers will die anyway."

"When they're withdrawn from the ground, I'll take them home. It's warm there," she answered. "Though, of course you all are welcomed to take some as well. No one seems to mind."

Ezra smiled at the other Tales, feeling a little bit better about his decision to help Onoway. At least he wouldn't be the only one digging through the snow.

"'s a good idea, Chal -- uh, Chailyn," he said, scooting over a little bit to form more of a circle around the flowers. He unwound his tail a little bit to help protect the circle, wincing at the cold.

At Onoway's direction, he began digging carefully around the base of a clump of flowers. "I dunno about starfish, but it'll be nice to save the flowers," he said, scraping out snow from the small hole he had made. Maybe saving the flowers would be worthwhile after all... at least it was fun to meet some nice new children who didn't mind his strange appearance. "M'mom lets me take home plants an' stuff, so I can help give homes to the flowers."

Chailyn blushed lightly when Ezra said her idea was a good one. She gave a smile kneeling down spaced slightly away from other tales so that she could help protect the flowers. "Thank you, Ezra," she murmured softly.

She glanced at Onoway still a bit confused about things. She wasn't sure what to think really. It seemed like a good idea but what was she going to do after they dug them up and got them home? They couldn't just leave them unplanted and the soil was practically frozen under the snow, making it almost impossible to dig up soil to plant the flowers in. Wouldn't the plants be cramped in a pot? So many thoughts raced through her mind.

Still she began to dig through the snow, letting a moat of dirt appear. She tried to use her hands to dig but was finding the soil too frozen. Peering around her purple eyes noticed a stick, which she picked up rather quickly. Cupping it in her hands she stabbed it into the ground but it broke. A subtle pout of disappointment fell over her face before she shrugged.

Now she was determined to find a way to dig up the flowers. It was too bad she didn't have a hammer, the claw would've been very helpful. Instead she went back to trying to use her hands making little progress.

Everyone else began digging, so Zayne selected a flower herself and started digging away at it. Underneath about an inch or so the soil appeared to be frozen solid and Zayne's cold and raw hands didn't appear to be having much of an effect. She glanced around and to her eyes everyone else seemed to be making more progress than she, so she started to concentrate on her hands. If she just had something sharper and stronger than normal fingers... and then to distract the others from her now longer and sharper nails, she asked a question.

"How do you keep a flower alive indoors? I've only seen dead ones in wreathes and bouquets."

So many voices! It was hard to keep up with, really. This was the most people Onoway had spoken with at once, let alone guiding them in a project such as this. "They'll be fine," she assured Zayne. "One of my cousins has a friend who has special abilities with flowers. He can talk to them. I'll take them there and he can say what to do from there." It was a good plan. At least, a better one then just leaving them here to freeze.

With a glance around, she became concerned, however, pausing her work and withdrawing her hand from the ground. It was cold, and the ground was colder. What could be done about it?

"If we had a way to soften the ground a bit this wouldn't be so difficult," Onoway said mostly to herself.

Ezra paused to grin at Chai before resuming work on the frozen ground. With his hard, scaled hands and almost claw-like nails, he was making better progress than the others. Unfortunately, he was also cold-blooded, and he had to take a break to blow on his numbed hands every couple of minutes.

Catching Onoway's murmured comment, he looked up from the trench he had made. A way to soften the ground... hmmm. "Maybe we could start a fire... no, the flowers might burn." Not to mention what his mom would say if she found out he'd been playing with fire!

Suddenly brightening, he stuffed one mittened hand into his pocket and rummaged around. "Wait! I almost forgot!" he said, bringing out a small handful of stones. "I brought some of my rock colle'chun. Some of them're sharp... we can use em to dig with!"

Chailyn returned Ezra's grin as she pondered how to dig in the soil. She pulled off her new gloves and pulled out a pair from her coat pockets. She didn't want her new ones to get dirty and she'd gotten an old pair of Aislinn's to use before Ane bought her new ones. Putting on the new gloves, she tried to push her thumbs into the dirt, using them like a bird's back talon.

"Do they talk back?" she murmured softly. "The plants, I mean, to your cousin's friend." she added to give more of an explanation. She gave a look over to Zayne to see she was doing better before looking to Ezra. Apparently everyone was making a bit more progress than her.

She couldn't very well give up and thus tried to dig more, glancing over at the two beside her every once in awhile. She noticed Ezra blowing on his hands and peered at her gloves. Before she could offer them, he mentioned his rock collection. She looked them over before nodding, "I think those would make digging easier!"

After approving of his idea she decided of try offering her gloves to him. Picking the gloves up, she handed them out to the reptile tale. "You can use my gloves to keep your hands warm, Ezra."

Oh, rocks. Why hadn't she thought of that? Zayne glared at her hands which had reverted to normal and held out a hand for one of Ezra's collection.

She didn't have an extra pair of gloves to offer, but it irked her that the other girl did. So far, Zayne was feeling a bit out of sorts among people. It was a very different sort of group than those she was used to.

"You're very smart!" Onoway commented. It was rare her tone changed, but she sounded a bit more enthused as they were slowly but surely making progress. Rocks. Such a simple but good idea. The ones scattered about the ground were probably too frozen to comfortablely dig with, so the fact Ezra had some of his own would make things easier.

"I believe so," she answered Chailyn after a moments thought. Honestly, she'd never thought to ask. It just seemed natural that if you could talk to something, they could talk back.

"Thanks, Chai!" Ezra said happily, tugging the gloves on over his alread-covered hands. The extra layer helped a lot. He handed out the stones, feeling quite a bit happier about this flower-rescuing adventure.

Onoway's compliment made him blush -- or would have, if Ezra had had slightly thinner skin. He grinned in embarrassment, reflexively putting one hand in front of his mouth to cover his teeth. "Thanks Onoway. You're smart too, it was your idea to rescue the flowers in the first place!"

He set to digging with gusto, chipping away at the frozen ground. This was much faster! He wasn't so sure about talking to flowers, but by now he was all for the idea of saving them. It must be awful to be buried in the frozen earth and snow... just imagining it made him shiver.

Taking a rock in her hands, Chailyn thanked the reptile and set back to work a cold shiver running down her spine. She heard Onoway's answer and it set her mind at ease for now, though curiousity was sure to flare up again.

"Wow, you must be good at digging Zayne." She noticed she'd dug further before getting a rock though she hadn't noticed the girls hands. She was somewhat oblivious to her surroundings trying to focus on digging up the flowers. It seemed to be going much easier now that she had a rock to use.

Tilting her head she noticed she was digging in a circle. She'd have to dig under the flower to get it out. She wasn't sure how to do that without hurting the roots. "How do I dig under the flower without hurting the roots?" she asked looking up and at the three tales.

Zayne gave Chailyn an odd look, but deciding that she didn't have anything to fear from someone who was willing to save flowers - she answered honestly.

"A lot of things are easy when you really concentrate."

A bit cryptic, but honest.

The next question struck her as well, since she had been starting to feel like she would never reach the end of the tiny thread-like roots branching out at every opportunity. Sitting back on her heels, she idly flicked back a strand of long black hair and look at Onoway - the unofficial leader of this conservation effort.

Hm. They'd get things done faster, maybe, but answering so many questions was tough. Admittedly, she was no expert on flowers or parts of them, and perhaps it was the butterfly in her that made her so determined to save them.

"Well, they're far enough apart," she began hesitantly, slowly shifting her eyes from flower to flower. "The roots will be frozen as well, I'd guess, so I don't think they'll break so easily. Pull the dirt up, not the flower, and I think they should be alright."

At Chailyn's question, Ezra took a break with Zayne. He had been getting near the roots as well, and wasn't quite sure how to proceed. He had dug up plenty of plants in the wild before, but that was in summer when the ground was soft!

Onoway's suggestion made sense. "I don' think it matters if you break one or two roots when you dig em up," he volunteered. "Just s'long as you get most of em."

"Oh, all right," she said hearing Onoway and Ezra. She was beginning to feel a bit put off by Zayne leading her to bite down on her bottom lip. She wasn't sure what to think or do, so she thought she would leave it alone.

She went back to focusing on digging up the flower giving a little cough every now and then. She used the rock to chip away at the clumps of dirt hanging to the roots trying to gently coax it out. She didn't seem to be having too much luck and upon digging underneath the big clump of dirt lifted the flower out. Still, she kept prodding at the dirt a little more so there was more flower.

Wrinkling her forehead, Zayne continued chipping away at the roots underneath her own flower. She felt, honestly, that it had started growing new roots for her to dig around simply to spite her. If she wasn't so fond of the colors the flowers displayed in the spring, she would have ripped it up.

Instead, she concentrated on the main root, the largest of the group, and ignored roots that got too tiny to see easily past the puffs of air coming out of her mouth. If a couple were ok to ignore, maybe she could finish this eventually.

Rubbing one slightly grimy hand against her cheek, Zayne sighed as she reached a point past which the main root itself got beyond her size threshold. A tiny whispered, "Yess!" and she pulled the entire thing up and out. Grinning stupidly, she looked to Onoway for further direction.

It was a moment or two before she looked up. Finding Zayne holding a plant, that blank look of hers formed into a rare smile and she nodded approvingly. "Good job," she offered, getting to her feet and brushing her pants off. Snow was still falling, and the flower pots she'd placed off to the side were now hidden by it.

Luckily, not too much, and it took only seconds to brush it away and hold the object out to the other girl. "Perhaps when you get home, you could decorate the flower pots as well," she suggested to the trio around her.

Ezra let out a little cheer at Zayne's moment of triumph. He looked on with interest as Onoway dug out the flower pots out of the snow. It would be fun to decorate one... now he just had to get a flower to put in a pot.

He redoubled his efforts and was soon rewarded when the flower he was working on began to come free of the earth. Chunks of frozen soil still clung to the roots, and he chipped away around them, careful not to break the main root. Once the main roots were all free, he began tugging gently at the flower. Finally it burst free, showering him with cold chunks of dirt.

Ezra let out a yelp as one of the bits of dirt hit him in the eye. He dropped his hard-won flower, rubbing frantically at his eye. The aggravating bit of dirt gone, he grinned sheepishly and picked the flower back up off the snow. "Uhh, I got one," he said, a bit embarrassed, holding out the flower for Onoway's inspection.

Chailyn smiled when Zayne pulled a flower free, though it was mostly to herself. She was nervous that if she smiled or said anything the tale would dislike her more than she appeared to. She gave an almost silent sigh and continued working with her flower.

The flower didn't want to come out of the ground. She gently tugged at it but it just stayed put. She used her fingers to search through for areas she hadn't dug out but didn't find many. As she was about to try pulling it up again, she was startled by Ezra's yelp and jumped back.

A blush covered her cheeks as she looked at the others. "I seem to have a stubborn flower. It doesn't want to come free," she said looking over at Zayne and then turning her head to Ezra and Onoway.

Taking the pot from Onoway, Zayne placed her flower in it with perhaps a bit more emphasis than might have been good for it. Her worth to the group established, she looked around at the others.

Ezra's triumph gathered a smile, now that she had done her part, Zayne felt less competitive with the others - and she even ventured a few words to the group (although she directed them mostly Ezra).

"Maybe we should decorate the pots and then exchange them. So that we each get something to remember eachother."

And then feeling a bit exposed, Zayne hid her face behind a curtain of hair. She peeked out to respond to Chailyn, however.

"Would you like help? Someone could sort of push up while you pull on it?"

She looked around to see what everyone else thought of this suggestion. The more she offered on her own, the more vulnerable Zayne began to feel.

It seemed, to Onoway, when you got people together they came up with good ideas fast, and lots of them. Exchange them, hm? "That's interesting," Onoway commented thoughtfully, wings twitching. "It's a good idea."

Likely more careful than nesscary, she grasped the dirt along the roots of her flower and pulled it out. Reaching over, she clutched her hand around another flowerpot and placed the lucky plant inside. Today was a good day to be a plant in this park.

Only when Zayne said something did she notice the problems one of their group members--or so she'd call them--seemed to be having. "Yes," she answered before anyone else could say much. "We need to help each other, and there's no shame in asking for help. With something like this, especially. The plants won't think less of us if we all help each other."

Reaching for a pot for his own flower, Ezra nodded. "Yeah, if we help each other we can prob'ly get done a lot faster... and then we can get out of the snow," he added, shivering.

Zayne's idea of decorating and exchanging the pots appealed to him. "That'd be fun to trade the pots," he said, smiling at her. "On'y we'll have to get a lot more flowers, so everyone can have a pot from everyone here!"

He slid over to Chailyn, eyeing her stubborn flower thoughtfully. "I'll help, Chai. What should I do?"

"I think that would work, Zayne. I can't tell if I dug enough underneath, though." She gave a smile to the girl before turning to Ezra. She gave a thought shuffling over slightly to give him room to help. "Maybe if you pull it up, I can use the rock to make sure I got all the dirt scraped away?" she suggested.

Honestly, her mind was thinking about decorating pots. They'd each need three to give to the others and her mind was already toying with how to design them. She had an idea for a pot that she could give to Ezra, and one for Onoway but she wasn't sure what Zayne liked.

"Zayne? What do you like?" she asked, seemingly out of the blue. She smiled at the tale putting her hand down in the hole and scraping more dirt with the rock.

..Homecoming..

((On the road again))

Each thing I do I rush through so I can do
something else. In such a way do the days pass--
a blend of stock car racing and the never
ending building of a gothic cathedral.
Through the windows of my speeding car, I see
all that I love falling away: books unread,
jokes untold, landscapes unvisited . . .

-Stephen Dobyns, "Pursuit"

A loner by nature, Ezra rather enjoyed traveling with his mother. Polecat's penchant for wandering took them to many strange and interesting places, and she was always careful to shield her unusual child from harm. Though he avoided human company for the most part, Ezra was content to play and explore the outdoors with his mother and whatever other willing souls he happened to find. He liked animals, often bringing home small creatures that interested him. Ezra's pet collection traveled along with them, in glass tanks and small cages. Larger animals like dogs and cats seemed to overwhelm him.

But all good -- or perhaps not so good -- things must come to an end, and Polecat and Ezra found their way back to Barton Town. The child was pleased to return to his birthplace, and his mother felt guilty that he had been away so long. Had he grown too lonely? Had he grown strange without other children to play and interact with? Polecat desperately hoped not. Her desire for Ezra to experience the world had led her to overlook the fact that Ezra needed to experience, well, normality.

A little older, a little wilder, and just a tiny bit wiser than he had been, Ezra returned to his birthplace. Rolling into Barton Town on the train, Ezra was surprised to feel no different. He had imagined his homecoming to be a big event, emotional, but instead it was like pulling on an old familiar glove. The town was smaller and older than it had been, the stares of passersby less hurtful. Coming home was like passing down an old road for the thousandth time -- familiar, but nothing special. Nothing special at all.

..A Nightmare..

((Carefully recorded in a private journal is an account of the following dreams and visions. Apparently Ezra's been having this dream for quite a while... and it worries him.))

Running, running, running. He can't remember whether his pursuers are his elders or the others. It doesn't matter. He knows what they will do when they catch him. Catching his foot on a branch, he stumbles and falls. It has been too long, his energy is spent. Blood leaks from scrapes across the bright scales of his legs.

The sounds of pursuit swell as he reaches the river bank. He spends a precious few seconds simply lying there, gasping for breath. The reflection in the water is unfamiliar to his waking self, though colored in the same bright patterns. The colors waver and shift. Now he is human, or appears to be. Not for long.

As Ezra struggles through the river, the people behind catch up at last. Senseless shouts, a struggle, an inhuman hand clutching at his robe -- all this is lost when Ezra wakes with a gasp.

* * *

A fleeting vision, gone before he can make sense of it. Two menacing figures. A grim room. Ezra shook his head to clear it and resumed staring out the train window. He had been gone for too long. Ordinarily a loner, his mom's traveling was okay with him. But maybe the loneliness was getting to him. First the strange, recurring nightmares, and now he was hallucinating? Maybe he was going crazy. Or maybe he had just been falling asleep.

..Gone Fishing..

((Ezra meets an old acquaintance))

ladyumbra
" I still don't think it's fair that you didn't get chicken pox " Tiwaz grumbled. Though it was a nice sunny day with a refreshingly cool breeze the young girl was in what seemed like an unending bad mood. Ever since she had met a strange pair of twins, Tiwaz had grown increasingly grouchy to those around her that weren't counted as close friends.

Carrying a small red tackle box in one hand and a pail of worms in the other Tiwaz trekked down the path to the dock at bass'ken beside her brother. With the rest of her siblings sick with the aforementioned illness or busy there was no one to play with but Kushiel who was less playfull than he had once been as a sprite. Thus she'd been convinced to go fishing with Riycan.

" Maybe not but at least you have someone to do stuff with." Riycan wasn't remotely bothered by his younger sisters moodyness he had enough cheer for both of them. The former green jay and current guardian of death by poisoning stretched his green and yellow wings while thinking about how enjoyable it would be to fight with strong fish and wrestle it from the water using only one of the rods he carried.

Polecat Junkie
Now that he had grown up a bit, Ezra's mom allowed him much more freedom to explore. He could usually be found outdoors, wandering the woods or simply relaxing in the park. His mom took him on quite a few 'nature' trips to interesting places elswhere in Gaia, but for now he was back home in Barton Town. A little boring, sure, but pleasant enough.

Hidden in a clump of weeds at the shoreline, Ezra noticed the approaching children before they saw him. He knew Tiwaz, though he hadn't seen her in a while. Ezra had been busy catching minnows in a small plastic cup. Bernd sometimes liked to eat minnows, and besides, Ezra was pushing for a full-size aquarium full of fish and perhaps more interesting critters. Dumping his most recent catch back with a splash, Ezra headed up the bank towards the docks. He waved, and waited somewhat awkwardly for the others to notice him.

ladyumbra
Out of the corner of her eye Tiwaz caught a flash of yellow and black, her heart skipped a beat and she hoped against hope, as she turned her head, that this time her wish would come true. As she watched Eza wave she blinked for a second to see if he was just a mirage after all he looked far bigger now, when his image refused to fade she dropped the box and Pail and ran towards him .

" Ezra you came back , I thought you were gone for good but you're not,you came back " She exclaimed grinning as she made her way to her long lost friend." I missed you and I looked for you a lot but you were always gone" She mock glared at him '" Don't ever dissapear again ok." Though Ezra had been replaced as her favorite friend he was still a good friend and she was truly grateful to see him again.

Riycan who'd followed his Sister at a slower place smiled as he approached " Hey there I'm Riycan Tiwaz's older brother, nice to meet you, would you like to fish with us?" Riycan had no doubts that anyone Tiwaz had befriended was interesting, besides the kid had awsome skin and looks never lied. Not to mention Tiwaz was not likely to fish happily without her friend now that she knew he was there.

Polecat Junkie
Ezra shrugged, a bit embarrassed at all the attention. "Well, I'm back now. I hope for good this time. I missed you too, Tiwaz." His mom kept being overtaken by wanderlust, but hopefully this time she had learned her lesson and would settle down for a while. Ezra was tired of moving.

The other child was strange to Ezra, and didn't smell like another Tale. Still, he was willing to take Tiwaz at her word when she said that the kid was her brother. Ezra grinned shyly. "Hi. Sure, I'll fish with you guys. I don't have my own pole though." Shaking the last few drops of water from his minnow-catching jar, Ezra stuffed it into his pocket and went to join the other children. Compared to real fishing poles, his jar seemed silly, but he was nervous about the hooks hurting the fish. He would just suck it up for Tiwaz and her brother. The hooks could always be taken out.

ladyumbra
Tiwaz grinned pleased that not only had Ezra missed her but that he was willing to join them in fishing. " It's ok that you don't have a pole we can share , I could fish and you could pull them in becuase you're stronger, or we could just take turns" It didn't really matter to her which happened so long as everyone had fun.

Riycan lead the trio to the end of the dock and looked at Ezra " I'm fishing with live bait since I'm actually willing to put worms on the hook. You guys can either use worms as well or there's some soft plastic lures and stuff you can also use." He offered.

Tiwaz rolled her eyes" He just likes feeding the fish since Mom makes us catch and relase, it's why we use circle hooks becuse it's harder to hurt a fish with them and there's no point in throwing back a hurt fish. We can use whichever one you like." Tiwaz had no preference, as long as she didn't end up in the water like the last time she'd fished she didn't really care.

Polecat Junkie
Shrugging again, Ezra slithered slowly down the dock after the other two. Sharing a pole was fine with him, but for now he would be content to watch the other children. "I never heard of a circle hook before," he offered, settling down to watch. "But I haven't been fishing in a long while neither."

Feeding the fish sounded like fun to Ezra. Feeding animals was fun sometimes. He had learned from experience never to attempt feeding ducks though. Being attacked by ducks over a bag of chips wasn't fun at all. "I went to a place once where you could feed these huge fish called tarpon. We threw them little bits of meat out of a bucket."

ladyumbra
" That sounds like fun, this is only my second time fishing and I'm only repeating what mom said, I dont really know much about fishing " Tiwaz admitted. She watched as Riycan baited thier hook then cast the line being careful not to hook anyone in the process. A small red bobber float on the surface of the water and Tiwaz flicker her eyes between it and Ezra not wanting to ignore her friend but also not wanting to lose a fish. " What were you doing out here before we came along?"

Keeping an eye on the other two Riycan smiled and cast his own line, Ezra seemed like an ok sort , not too rowdy or agressive and probably a good influence.

Polecat Junkie
"I was catching little fish in a jar," Ezra said, patting his pocket. "I'm hopin' my mom will let me keep some." He relaxed, watching the two bobbers on the lake. One of them jerked suddenly, throwing up a jet of water. "Hey, I think somebody got something! That was fast!"

ladyumbra
Tiwaz wonderd why anyone would want to keep a fish, after all they didn't do much and you couldn't really play with them. She'd been about to ask Ezra why he wanted some as pets when she felt a tug on the line and heard his shout.

Gritting her teeth she leaned back and reeled in a bit ." Don't let me fall in" she pleaded with the two older boys. Though she doubted there was a fish strong enough to pull her off the dock she'd neglected to wear a life jacket today and her swimming skills were still poor after only one lesson.

Riycan divided his attention between Tiwaz and his own bobber if looked bad for her he'd help out but for now he wanted to let her try and finish on her own . Older brother or no he didn't want to risk losing his own fish to help Tiwaz wrangle hers. Besides he wasn't the only around to help.

Polecat Junkie
Unsure of what to do, Ezra hovered just behind Tiwaz, ready to catch her should she go in. It looked like a strong fish for such a small girl. "I'll get you if you fall!" Ezra's swimming abilities were about on par with a rock's -- he was a champion of sinking to the bottom, and once down there he could stay put for a long time. He was very good at holding his breath, however, so if he accidentally fell in with Tiwaz he would probably be able to just slither back to shore with her.

ladyumbra
For a few minutes Tiwaz weaved back and forth reeling in or releasing the fish as she tried to pull the creature to shore. Said fish however was a wily beast and one that was just beyond her ability to pull in. It was hooked good to be sure but it wasn't coming in willingly. With the sun beating down on them Tiwaz began to perspire a bit from the effort," Stupid fish I'm not gonna hurt you" she hissed in frustration.

The only thing comforting the girl was the fact that if something went wrong she could count on Ezra to save her. After all he was a snake and there were snakes that could swim in the ocean so he could swim in a lake.

" Ezra you may want to take a turn now" Riycan said wryly, he had a feeling that if Tiwaz got any more annoyed when they finally got the fish in it would be in trouble.

Polecat Junkie
"Well -- okay," Ezra said, reaching for the rod. He didn't want to steal Tiwaz's fish, but taking a turn at reeling it in might be fun. Too bad the mysterious fish was so big and strong -- it definitely wasn't the right size for his aquarium at home! "If we knew how to clean fish, I bet this one could make dinner for all of us."

ladyumbra
Tiwaz handed over the rod somewhat gratefully since her knuckles were paleing from griping it so hard. She looked at her friend curiously " I thought you were a healer how could you kill a fish and take out it's guts and then still eat it and not feel bad?" She had no doubt Ezra did eat meat but to actually watch it die and then eat it seemed strange. Although admittedly Tiwaz didn't really know her friend that well except his name meant healer and he liked to draw.

Polecat Junkie
A healer? Ezra blinked in confusion as he took the rod. "Well, I said I dunno how to clean fish. I'm too squeamish to kill a fish anyways." Cooked fish sure was good, but Ezra didn't have the stomach for taking the fish from Point A (the water) to Point B (the frying pan). If he kept on camping he might eventually figure out how, but he was quite happy to remain not a fish murderer for now.

Ezra hadn't been fishing for a while, but he was able to slowly reel the fish in closer to the dock. Fighting with Tiwaz had exhausted it. Once the fish was almost in, Ezra handed the rod over to Riycan. "Here, you pull it in. I don't want to lose it."

ladyumbra
As Riycan took the or do from Ezra for the final few pulls Tiwaz danced about and grinned " You did it Ezra you caught the stupi- err stubborn fish" Tiwaz was glad the fish hadn't been able to escape after it had annoyed her so, besides she was proud of Ezra.

Riycan placed his on rod on the dock ignoring the worm squirming futiley on the hook. He took the rod offered by Ezra and pulled up sharply with reeling in at the same time. Having done this several times in the past he was well aware of the effect and carefully stepped to the side as the fish appeared.

Pulled forcibly from the water a large fish thrashed about flicking water everywhere before landing with a thud on the aged wooden dock.

Polecat Junkie
"Wow, we did it!" Ezra high-fived Tiwaz, staring at the fish gasping on the dock. "What kind of fish do you think it is?" Despite his love of nature, Ezra wasn't exactly a fish expert. Something big and shiny and wet, that was all he knew. "And er... what do you think we should do with it now?"

ladyumbra
" I dunno , I don't know much about fish but it is pretty" Tiwaz stated shifting about to avoid the squirming and gasping fish. It's scales were a dark golden colour that gleamed in the sunlight.

Riycan stepped on the line and knealt down beside the struggling fish " Now one of you passes me the pliers so I can take the hook out it's mouth and release him before he drowns in the air." In order to keep the poor creature from suffering too much he spread his wings over it to shade it from the worst of the sun and heat.

Polecat Junkie
"Oops, sorry!" Ezra scrambled to get the pliers from his friends' fishing kit and hand them to Riycan. They had seen the fish, and that was enough. Catching it had been pretty fun as well! Ezra frowned sadly, watching the fish's red gills straining to catch air. He knew that the short time above water probably wouldn't be too harmful, but he hoped that Riycan could get the hook out quickly.

ladyumbra
Riycan struggled for about half minute with the hook, fortunately circle hooks were easier to remove than most hooks. Once the hook was gone he tossed the Fish back into the water. Turning he stood and smiled at Tiwaz and Ezra " Well that was pretty cool we caught and relased the fish all togeather like a team." Even though he couldn't call the catch his own Riycan had helped and it had been fun with everyone working togeather to catch a golden prize even if they couldn't keep it.

Tiwaz suddenely beamed at Ezra and grinned " Hey since we worked togeather to fish like we asked maybe now we can help you catch minnows until you have to go home. As long as I dont have to swim I can go in the water" Tiwaz offered.

Polecat Junkie
The fish seemed stunned for about a second, then it whisked its tail and disappeared into the lake. Whew. Ezra straightened up and grinned at Riy and Tiwaz, proud of their efforts to catch the fish. Kind of pointless, maybe, but fun. He turned to Tiwaz and considered her offer to help. "Nah, that's okay. It's not s'much fun as fishing, anyways." Besides, the three of them together would probably splash so much that all the minnows would be frightened away from the water's edge!

ladyumbra
Tiwaz nodded and sat back down on the dock avoiding any wet spots. " My hands still hurt so I'm gonna takea break for afew minutes you an try again if you want you could catch somethign you could take hoem if you wanted." she offered. After the events of the other dayTiwaz herself was somewhat surprised at her complacenetesss especially since she'd initally been mad at Ezra for leavingher for so long. Perhaps the tension at the shop had been becuase of the shop and Sylvester and Elena's name reminding her of the twins. Or perhaps between the near fight there and the struggle with the golden fish she simply didn't have the energy to be miserable.

Polecat Junkie
Oblivious to Tiwaz' inner conflict, Ezra took up the rod and cast clumsily. He was a bit out of practice at fishing. One thing was for sure: Tiwaz' lucky catch had been a fluke. Ezra swiftly grew bored with watching the bobber and laid Tiwaz' pole down on the dock. "That was pretty cool, Tiwaz, but I think I should be going home now," he said, careful to keep his tone neutral. He didn't want Tiwaz to be offended.

ladyumbra
Tiwaz frowned slightly but nodded " Ok but you have to promise not to dissapear again." She too was growing bored and would probably go home soon too with out without her brother.

Polecat Junkie
Ezra grinned and waved goodbye. "I hope not! 'Bye, Tiwaz, I'll see you soon." And with that, he slithered away from the dock, heading homewards. Maybe he would stop at a pond on the way home and get some more minnows for Bernd.

Perhaps this sense of disconnection is Polecat's fault. It is her fault that Ezra has had little stability and few permanent friends. But it is true that although Ezra has always been alone, he has never suffered for it. The desire to seek out company has never been strong in him. It isn't that Ezra is cold, or that he hates the company of other people, but he is... distant. Ezra is affectionate towards the few he knows and likes, and he would never dream of hurting someone's feelings, but deep down the sense of a disconnect from the world he lives in is growing day by day.

Ezra has a new project. When he was a baby he played with building blocks and construction sets. Now he is into electricity. He has moved past sticking lightbulbs into lemons and making model motors. He likes machines. Robots aren't of any real interest to Ezra, although they represent incredibly sophisticated technology. No, he likes machines that do work. He is a little too young to formulate such thoughts, but in his heart of hearts he resents human interest in robotics; he thinks that such machines are simply expressions of humanity's egotistical self-interest (the thought that he himself might share the same characteristics hasn't crossed his mind yet).

This new project of Ezra's doesn't have a real goal yet, but he believes it will incorporate movement and analysis. He loves nature, and a machine with some scientific purpose is appealing to him. He's not sure what exactly he's doing or where he intends to go with this scientific tool, but he's having fun tinkering away at it. Oh, yes.
