2-20-05

I'm so tired, these days. We've added four more children to the house- Aduthule- and half of the time I feel like there's not enough time for me to do anything, let alone spend time with my children. Keita has maintained his cheery attitude, but there was a little while where he was starting to use more words...now that's tapered off again, and he's gone back to using 'mrr.' It's a happy sound, true, but it makes me worry.

Winter is fading, fortunately. More sun means more rapturous days in the warmth for my little Legend; Aureli seems happy enough, too, which helps. In general, the house is stillupbeat...so why do I always feel like crying, these days?

RP: Necessary Changes
Orasteele and the Tahnees

The house was surprisingly dark. It was never so dark, so early- usually Brit was up for an hour or so more yet, putting the last kids to bed and setting the house to rights. Instead, most all of the lights were out...and the house was almost disturbingly quiet.

Steele walked cautiously through the dark house. She didn't plan on coming home early, but the other run that was planed was put off by a sudden security influx in the place. The house didn't feel right at all, too many lights out, and no sound of a late night movie playing. Pulling a dagger just in case she needed it, Steele ascended the steps to the bedroom that she shared with Brit.

Making just enough noise to not get knifed, a slender figure slipped out of Cypris' room and closed the door. Golden eyes flashed in what little light illuminated the hallway- the person was too tall to be Brit. Calm, the figure flipped on the hall switch- it was Vitree, the mouse-girl-boy who had taken charge of all of the Tahnees in the house.

"Good, you're home," He said softly, tucking one heavy curl behind his ear. "We were starting to get a little worried."

"What the hell is going on here." Steele said with sincere concern as she put the dagger back into her boot. "Is everything alright? The house is never this dark this early in the night."

"That's what we wanted to talk to you about," the mouse said softly, as Felrias poked his head out of Cypris' room to make sure everything was alright before ducking back inside. "Britain sat down with the children for a movie about three hours ago...fell right asleep, and can't be woken. I may not be a doctor, but I know exhaustion when I see it."

"Where is she now? The idiot should know better than to try and do everything." Steele had to keep calm, a panic would just not do at a time like this. "Have you sent for a healer? I know a doctor may not be able to help, but a healer might. I should have never left the house. I knew something was wrong."

Vitree grabbed Steele by the arms, fully aware it wasn't the wisest idea, and shook her gently. "Steele! You must calm down. She is asleep on the sofa- we thought it best to let her sleep. No doctor or healer can help her, now- she is simply exhausted, and has too much on her hands. She will wear herself to the bone if something doesn't change soon."

Steele glared at Vitree but nodded in agreement. He was right, there wasn't anything Steele could do but let her sleep. "Vitree, gather all of the Tahnee and meet me in my study. We are assigning permanent babysitters. I won't have this happen to her again. She shouldn't have to worry anymore if everyone is alright." Steele knew Brit wouldn't like the lack of say in this decision, but that didn't really bother Steele that much either.

A faint smile touched the boy's lips, and he nodded slightly. "Moat are already in the house- we were going to suggest the same, if you did not. Give me five minutes." He opened the door behind him to give what sounded like an order even in a whisper to Felrias, then disappeared down the hall. The children slowly flooded in the direction of the study, waiting expectantly for her attention.

Steele pulled out a sheet of parchment from one of her drawers and a bottle of ink. Dipping her pen she quickly wrote out all the names of their children. "Alright, as you all know Brit has been trying to do it all so to speak. Therefore I'm assigning each of you to a child or pair of children to be their permanent sitter when Brit or I am unavailable. And if Brit complains then send her to me."

"Aureli and Keita must each have their own," Felrias spoke up, shaking his head. "They sleep too erratically. No one of us can keep up with both." There were a few cynically amused faces in the back- mainly vampire-types- but most nodded in agreement. "We've already chosen a few pairings...But I myself am beginning to get out of my depth with Cypris."

"Very well, I'll keep that in mind. Acorn & Maddick, I'm assigning the two of you Aureli and Keita. You two seem the most obvious choice for the two of them. Cyrithi you get Frei, I'm sure you can keep him happy. The thule will have Fore and Montreal as their guides. You two should be able to handle them." Steele quickly wrote the names down and scanned the room over again. "Wrath I'm putting you in charge of Liotti and Eggu, that should prove easy enough for you. It's low enough maintenance that I'm sure you can handle it."

"I'd prefer that Felrias and Jordain were left free to give general lessons to all of the children," Vitree interjected, and shrugged. "I'm usually busy keeping track of everyone, but if necessary I can take someone too."

"Don't be so quick to martyr yourself, Vitree," a low, amused voice rang from the back of the room. Verrato raised his dark eyes to look them over, arching one delicate eyebrow. "I shall take Lilka, and Tellesin has volunteered to take Cypris. Let it not be said that we are...unwilling to do our part."

Half the room blinked at the dark Tahnee and his paler shadow for a moment, then Vitree turned his surprised self back to Steele. "Okay, I think that handles THAT part of the list...most of the others aren't suited to handling kids. I'll take Ransom- his empathy isn't usually a problem around me."

"Alright then, I think that handles that! Thank you all for your assistance." Steele quickly filled in the blanks with the names of the volunteers and made a second copy. "If one of you for some reason cannot care for your charge please make arrangements with one of the Tahnee not already enlisted. Here Vitree, please post this in the Tahnee house so that everyone knows what to do. I'll post my copy near the children's quarters. Get some rest everyone, your jobs start as soon as your charge is awake."

Heads nodded all around, and the room slowly emptied. After a brief word with Verrato, Vitree returned to Steele with quiet steps. "Verrato is moving Britain to your room- he's so quiet, she'll never wake. There is...one other thing, though."

"What else Vitree?" she asked her voice sounding tired.

A gentle hand touched her shoulder, and he sighed. "Steele, you're never home. It was one thing, from what I can see, when she was working...but the night-children are seeing more of you than she is. I plan to suggest that she go back to work- she was happy there- but right now, what she really needs is you."

"Believe me I know that. I'll be home for the next few nights either way.... Go to bed Vitree. I'll think I'll go do the same."

"Alright," he said softly, rubbing at his eyes. His voice carried some heavy doubts...but he was willing to give her the chance. "All of the children are in bed- you don't have to worry about them tonight."

Yeah, if you hadn't noticed, Brit's got a little too much on her hands. TEN KIDS will do that to you...therefore, I'll be your host from now on. I'm Maddick. Acorn and I were, of course, the perfect choices to take over for Aureli and Keita- the little monsters. Maybe as he gets older I can take him farther, introduce him to the joys of being OUTSIDE. Kid could use some sun.

A Note From Maddick:

Keita is getting restless, lately. I?ve started taking him outside more, but I think he is craving the human interaction; I am going to take him to the Legend HQ soon, and see if that doesn?t cheer him up. He has started speaking more, which is a definite improvement- we?ve graduated from ?smile? and ?pretty? to a small vocabulary of words he will use on just about anything. He has a habit of picking up a new word, then using it constantly, like he used ?mrrrrh? for so long; he?ll probably do that for the rest of his life. It?s pretty cute, especially when he decides that everything in the house should be considered ?chair.?

I think, perhaps, that the twins have some kind of influence from the sun and moon. It may seem a little obvious, but no one?s really mentioned it so far- Keita is warm and cheerful, and always awake in the mornings. Aureli is a quieter personality, and content to stay asleep through the morning and early afternoon. We don?t know very much about any of the children, because Britain is so very un-magical. Something about the occasional seriousness in Keita?s sweet eyes makes me want to know more?I think our little deerling is more of a mystery than he lets on.

The Beginning of the Dreaming

Keita wasn't used to dreaming, really. He usually slept so hard that dreams didn't interfere with his sleep patterns; if anything, he got pleasant images of chasing butterflies or napping in to sun. Since dreaming about napping was pretty redundant, he didn't usually pay much attention to them- this time, however, the dreams weren't so quiet, and he wasn't sure he liked the change.

The golden sunlight of the afternoon had long since faded to an inky black darkness that felt almost solid to the touch. So tall- he looked down on the scene from a much greater height than his usual shortness, and everything semed so sharply distinct that it could have been outlined in black. A slender form moved in the shadows, and Aureli's moon-touched eyes flicked a connection to his own- but Aureli wasn't a baby, either, and she slipped through the dark corners like a dancer.

The fire in front of him had been built carefully by hand. Lined securely with stones to keep it from spreading, it arched into the sky as Keita tossed a branch onto it; the sparks that showered forth told him the wood had been pine, the nice smelling stuff from outside the back door. From behind him, the slow, menacing sound of a single drumbeat began to echo through the forest. A slight turn of his body showed him a pair of worn, leather-brown hands moving with fluid grace on the head of a wide, deep-voiced drum; somehow, he knew the eyes behind it were kind, and wise.

He stalked the fire. It wasn't natural to the stag-child, and a distant part of him studied the dream with curiosity; Keita didn't stalk things, usually. This movement was that of a predator, something that had been trained into him with years of practice- every precisely placed footstep carried him in a tightening spiral around the golden dancer that called for him to join, wickedly tempting.

It burned like the scream of a living thing, and he loved it.

Deep green eyes snapped awake, and it was a long time before baby Keita could go back to sleep.

Storyline: Sunny Smile Boy

"Oof."

Brit opened one lazy sage-green eye to frown balefully at the smiling Legend leaning on her stomach. With baby Ransom being a puddle, Steele had shooed the little redhead out of the house to nap in the sun; it did not, however, look like her chosen companion was going to let her be so lucky. She'd given his babysitter the afternoon off, too, so she had no one to turn to for help. Keita plopped down next to her head, nuzzling close and rubbing against her with his soft ears...even she couldn't resist that. One hand came up to scritch his ears, and he made a little noise of bliss as he melted against her.

"Okay, okay," she murmured. "I?m up." The little boy responded with a happy giggle, pulling himself to his feet with the aid of her shirt; Brit sighed, sitting up to support him with an arm around his waist. "Little noisemaker," she muttered, pulling him in her lap to tickle him mercilessly. Above his shrieks of laughter, Brit found herself smiling; it wasn?t like Ransom wasn't responding, after all. She still didn't understand most of this magic stuff, but if Steele said the baby would be okay...maybe she should listen.

She released her fluffy-eared son, watching him take a few careful steps before going back to his knees. He stalked leaves like a predator, making Brit smile, and she wondered if he remembered he was supposed to be a harmless forest creature. A ladybug buzzed out from under one leaf- he turned his attention to stalking it, moving with a quiet efficiency that surprised Brit just a little.

"Mama," he said softly, and she felt the tingle of warmth she?d had ever since he learned the word a couple weeks before. "Bug!"

"Mmhmm," she agreed, pulling her knees up to wrap her arms around them. They sat deep in the forest behind the house; only the roof of the Koshi house was visible, and since the centaurs were elsewhere today they had the quiet woods to themselves. "Pretty bug?"

"Preee bug," he agreed. He still couldn't quite manage the t's in pretty, but it remained one of his favorite words. The sun caught in his deep green eyes as he turned back to look at her, making her breath catch- there was a wildness in him, framed by trees, that escaped the boundaries of what she had seen before. For a stretch of time, it was as if she stood alone, facing a creature that could be frightened off if she moved too quickly, but then he sat down hard and offered his hand. The ladybug crawling over his fingers distracted her from the uneasy feeling, and she shook her head as she leaned close to complement his catch. She had come to grips with a lot of things since she?d met Steele, but one of her own children being a creature of the forest was a little far out there, wasn't it?

Says the woman whose biological son just turned into a puddle of water.

Lifting her head away from the thought, she was again caught by those wild eyes. They watched her calmly, almost protectively; with a gentle nudge, he gave her an unbelievably sweet smile. The expression said that even if she didn't understand, everything would be okay...she pulled him close again, relishing his warmth as she closed her eyes and hoped that he was right.

A Note From Maddick:

Everything seems to be happening at once, lately! First baby Ransom turns into a puddle of water, then the fandangle Ailes Argent evolves into a spider too big to fit into the usual doors, then baby Ransom is back as a slightly soggy toddler. Through all of it, Keita has begun sleeping poorly; Acorn and I aren't sure if Aureli is having the same problem, or if it really is a problem at all. Keita always slept like a rock from sundown to sunup- maybe he just doesn't need as much sleep anymore?

Keita seems perfectly happy with the changes in his little environment. Ransom is still fun to play with, and Ailes' fuzzy thorax makes a fabulous jungle gym for all of the children- I'm sure we're just worrying over nothing.

Britain
Storyline: Gifts

Another dream.

This one began in mid-afternoon sunlight, though Keita could feel night creeping along the edges like a hand on his spine. He was searching for something- no, tracking something. There, at the bottom of the tree trunk near his long legs, was the scuff of a boot where bark had been knocked away. The pine tree didn't seem particularly offended by the mark, but Keita nodded respectfully to her anyway- it was always better to be respectful when those you walked among were centuries older than you were. Golden hair fell into his deep green eyes, only to be pushed away with a patient hand, and he sniffed the air delicately; yes, his sister had been through here recently. No perfume gave her away, only her brother's overly sensitive nose...she was taking a different route than the one He had suggested. Smart move- He usually laid traps along the way to catch his unsuspecting children if they weren't careful.

Keita was nothing if not careful. He missed Aureli's presence sorely, since they usually worked together, but tonight He had requested that they come separately. He hadn't said why- only that it was important, and that good children always listened to their elders. Seeing as Keita and Aureli were both refusing the route He had laid out for them, they must not be particularly good children- but Keita was taller than Him already, excluding his antlers. They didn't really count as children anymore.

The forest opened before him, and the stag nodded sharply to himself. There was only one place they could go from here; deep, deep into the heart of the forest Keita ran, unhindered by any stray branches or thorns. The supple suede that covered his rangy form made no sound as he broke into a long run, chasing the birds as they laughed ahead of him, guiding the way.

By the time he reached the silent, watchful circular clearing that was his destination, night had fallen. A warm fire danced merrily in the stone center, but Keita was wary- not a twig broke under his soft feet as he neared the scene, eyes narrowed to catch any movement. There- his sister sat on one of the stones around the fire, flames glinting off of her pale hair; she knew exactly where he was, catching his attention with a restless flick of her soft ears. That small gesture signaled that everything was safe, and he trusted her as he had always done, slipping into the light. She turned her head slightly, and he noticed what was different- an intricately carved wooden butterfly sat in her hair, holding the pale satin away from her face. It was His work, no doubt- but He rarely gave gifts. Keita touched the leaf on its cord around his neck, curious- it had been years since He was so generous.

The softest of drumbeats made him turn. He sat on one of the darker stones, His hands mesmerizing as they stroked the round drum- a weathered woodsman with worn clothing and kind eyes, carrying in his body the still strength of the entire forest. Those gentle hands stilled, but the beat continued- Aureli had taken up a drum of her own, which was rare. Aureli was more suited to the chimes of bells and quick-footed dance than the drum, which could only mean that He meant this-whatever it was- specifically for Keita. The stag fell into a crouch in front of his guardian, and the man nodded as he swayed to his feet. He wore a long leather coat today, strewn with hundreds of tiny wood and bone charms- the Cloak of the Storyteller. When he wore that garment, Keita and Aureli paid very close attention to what he told them.

Not a word was spoken. He rarely told stories with words; instead, his hands wove shapes over the fire, recounting the tale of a twin birth deep in the woods. It wasn't until His hands sketched the ears of a deer that Keita blinked, realizing the story was about his own birth; he glanced at Aureli, but found her eyes riveted on Him. He looked back, fascinated, and watched as the man danced, including the entire forest in his movements. One hand touched the butterfly in Aureli's hair, fluttering up to burst over both of them; another movement sang with the voice of the birds. On and on it went, as if nothing could possibly be left out, until the old woodsman dropped to one knee with his hands folded over his heart- a movement that could only imply Her, the great Mother of the Forest that he had worshipped since before they were born. A story of a gift- the Mother giving the twins to him in a gift of love, with a gentle smile that warmed even the coldest shadows. He reached behind the stone He had been using as a chair, lifting a heavy wooden staff- and then, suddenly, He wasn't alone.

Keita knew for a fact that He had never seen Her with his own eyes. Keita and Aureli had, in the times that they faded into the forest, but never with such clarity -the voluptuous woman that slipped out of the shadows was as solid as the oaks around them. Deeply tanned skin contrasted beautifully with the deep green of her heavy hair, and her smile was mysterious, but her hands on the staff were gentle as she smiled down at Him. He gazed at her with his heart in his eyes, following as she moved to touch the staff to Keita's broad shoulders; Her other hand beckoned to Aureli, drawing his sister close. Though she left the drum behind, the entire forest seemed to resonate with an ancient heartbeat.

She spoke, then, but their ears were not made to hear a voice so majestic. It was only sound, but Keita felt the connection that was forged between his soul and the forest like an iron stake being driven through his spine; the twins cried out, but with joy, not pain. The woodsman watched then with wide eyes, glancing up only when Her hand came to rest on his shoulder. Tenderly, She kissed Him, and stepped back into the shadows with an impish smile.

The three of them were left alone as the heartbeat slowly faded to silence. Around them, the sun glinted through the trees- it was dawn.

Keita opened his eyes with a feeling of deep, heartrending loss, and reached out for the staff leaning forgotten against the wall as he cried.

Britain
Storyline: Moving Again!

When Steele woke up for the day, late afternoon casting long shadows over the property, everything seemed quite calm. All of the kids- even the Aduthule- seemed to be playing peacefully, while the house went about it's normal routine; Britain was not, however, interacting with any of them as she usually would be. The elf checked Morion's room, since she had been spending a lot of time with him, but found only a sleeping dragon-teen; it took Vitree's discreet gesture towards the office to lead her to her mate.

Seated behind her desk and peering at a large area map that pretty much covered the entire surface, Brit nearly jumped out of her skin when Steele cleared her throat. She had not, of course, heard the elf coming. Dainty fingers hovered over the paper, then settled on it gently once she realized who it was. "Hey," she said, offering a guilty little smile. "Are you up early, or am I running late?"

"Late," Steele replied with a yawn, shaking her head. "What are you doing...?"

"Well...umm," the little redhead replied, looking very much like Ladanya when their older daughter was caught in something she shouldn't be doing. "Well...since Morion arrived, and Lada's growing up, and Synge and Cori have become real members of the house, and Ailes is so BIG, I thought...the house could use some renovations."

"Right," her wife replied dryly, and tapped to map with one long finger. "So why are you looking over an area map of Durem?"

Brit's voice dropped to a whisper, and she bit her lip. "Because...I told Valance that one of the conditions to me coming back to the department was a change of residence if I wanted it, an entire research team of my choice, and he was paying for it?"

Slightly stunned, Steele stared at her a minute before shaking her head. "You're crazy. I mean, Durem's a good place, but Gods..."

"The only problem is moving again," Brit sighed, relaxing a little as Steele failed to bite her head off. "We just got to Port Gino, I'm not really looking forward to packing up again..."

A moment of silence met this statement as Steele turned to pace. She glanced over her shoulder at the worried Brit, weighing the situation. "This is important to you, isn't it?"

"A little," Brit admitted, eyes straying to a modified floorplan of the house, peeking out from under the map. "The older kids really could use the space...I feel bad about cramming them all in like sardines. They deserve their privacy, and a chance to grow."

"Well...it's not impossible," Steele sighed, returning to lean against the desk. "I have a few favors I can call in that would make packing pretty unnecessary. The question is, is this worth it to you? You've been moving around a lot lately. I don't want to call in favors and make changes if this is going to be temporary."

"I think we can officially settle this time," Brit told her decisively, tucking a strand of hair behind one ear. "I like the look of Chatres; I think you'll be happy with the security, too."

"Chatres? Isn't that the road that runs by the big cathedral?"

"Yep! The land's really cheap right now, since Gambino's tower fell on it. I...took the liberty of purchasing a few blocks."

That was...a bit bigger than Steele had expected. Just a little. "So we're talking moving the entire property- what other army are you planning on bringing in?"

"Ogre and Fyre," Brit replied cheerfully, standing to point out the property she had obtained. "See, we go to either side here; Aoshi might be taking a place of his own here, too, but he's not sure yet. There will be a set of offices, too. I'm not sure if Ogre and Fyre want to join yet...but at the least, it might be fun for everyone to live in the same place!"

"You're crazy," Steele muttered, but she nodded once. "Okay. I'll see what I can do- you make your plans."

* * * * *

The tall, thin man that made his calm way up to Brit and Steele's front door didn't seem like anything special. He was a handsome man with amused green eyes and brown hair that fell frequently into his eyes; pausing at the gate that seemed happy to let him in, he examined the house with intent. Not too bulky...the rest of the property might prove a bit difficult, but what was life without a challenge?

He whistled low as he approached the house, drawing the attention of a few of the little dragons and his sister, lurking inside. As the dragonlings swirled around him, a window above opened; he and Synge watched each other for a long moment before the newcomer nodded silently, turning back to his little friends. He wore his simple clothing as if a king needed nothing better, and his gestures were elegant- Steele smiled at him as she slipped out of the house.

"Long time no see, Jerin."

"Indeed," her brother murmured, smiling one last time at Nifrit before turning his full attention to her. "Looks like this should be a pretty big project. I need to see the destination, before I can get anything done."

A flick of her fingers and a reproving look from Steele had a wave of magic tugging them to a street in Durem. The area was empty and overgrown- perfect cover for the moves Jerin would be making. He walked the area for an hour, his cheerful disposition gleefully tackling the challenge with silent plans, before he returned to where she was taking a nap in a tree. "Do you have a particular location in mind, sweetling, or shall I just work with what I have?"

"Have fun," Steele yawned, waving a hand at him. "Be careful of all the people, though. Most of the Koshis and Tahnees are pretty mobile around the property, so don't lose anybody. Brit's out of the house, so I'll call her when it's time for her to come home...so she doesn't get lost."

The wicked smile that touched her older brother's full lips could have melted strong hearts. He flashed it happily, running both hands through his hair as he turned back to his project. "Very well then," he purred. "Let's get this show on the road."

* * * * *

Back at home, the various members of the household looked up in alarm as the earth-mage's magic washed over them. Most all of them could feel the change, though they might not know what it implied; Tahnees around the house grabbed their charges as the house shifted. In his room, Morion grabbed his new computer to stabilize it, ignoring the fountain pen that rolled from his desk to splash ink across the carpet. Those with more of an earth influence laughed or shuddered in terror, feeling the ground shift beneath them. As suddenly as the chaos began, it stopped- with the notable exception of a loud grating sound making the walls tremble. Sittng by the pool, Coritani was the first to see what was happening; not only had the entire house and pool changed location, but the roof was remaking itself as he watched!

"Relax," Synge stated dryly, appearing next to him and dropping an armful of baby Tam in his lap. "Steele made arrangements to move the house without packing- looks like she's getting Jerin to make the renovations Brit wanted, too. Everything will settle down in a little bit."

True to his word, the shifting and rumbling ceased about an hour later. The mystery man disappeared, leaving the altered house- and all of the other houses, too- relocated to the new property. With a tiny smile of anticipation, Steele called Brit and told her she'd have to take a different route home.
