I'm that scrict and crazy about my books too. I have over a thousand books and so quite often I get used as a library by my friends. My strict rules for oving my books annoys the heck out of them. I can't even stand it when I see others abusing their own books. I want to run over there and save the book.

As for book marks? I have some storebought ones, but most of the time its whatever I can find. Often random tickets, pieces of paper, receipts. That sort of thing. if it doesn't mar the book in anyway, I'll use it.

Yay, someone who understands. smile
I've heard J.K. Rowling say she cracks the spines of her books and doesn't feel offended when people hand her books to sign that are in bad condition. But for me, it was always like 'I bought you a book, so show me that you're old enough to care for it.' ::shrugs::

I have a bookmark, but if I ever lose it I always lose tissue or the top bit you rip off of tissue boxes.

Oprah uses napkins!

Just had to post it. I watched Oprah on Friday to see what her new summer bookclub book would be, and she mentioned that though she had a thousand bookmarks, she could never find one when she needed one and usually ended up using a napkin.

It just seemed funny because we had this thread going.

I use napkins, other books, random letters from colleges, and... dogears. sweatdrop Like was previously mentioned, sometimes I need to quickly get the incriminating evidence of a book away from my desk into my backpack. Oddly enough, I usually just look at the page number and say it out loud. Then I remember it until next time.

My friend heard me doing that several times before she finally asked me what I was doing. I told her, and for my birthday I got a lovely metal bookmark, the kind that's a thin strip of metal. It had a large blue bead with a Chinese character on it, and two blue tassels. Because I take books everywhere and do stuff with them, the bookmark spent a lot of time in my belt loop, and it kept losing tassel threads. Finally, one tassel fell off altogether, and the other one is really ratty. I don't know where it is now...

I actually have a collection of bookmarks, both normal and unorthodox. My favorite or those pretty--colored suitcase tags from cruise lines 3nodding

In high school I used to tear the corner off of pages in my notebooks to use as bookmarks. Now I tend to use what ever paper is lying around at the time. I used a rubberband for a while with one book and that worked pretty well.

I have a whole bunch of conventional bookmarks, I just don't know where they are. sweatdrop

Same here; when you are reading, who has time to look for a bookmark?

I've used notecards to make my own bookmarks with spiffy Stephen King references. I've used receipts a lot, but rarely dog-eared and almost never with my own books.

Lately though I've been using YGO trading cards to hold my place... sweatdrop

I usually use Post-Its. I have a big stack of them for use.

My school library recently cleaned the back rooms up and had stuff to get rid of. They had a lot of "Date Due" cards left over. (It is usually used to stamp the "date due" in the back of the book.) I got a large stack of them. They should hold me...for a while.

Recently, I've been reading newer books, so I don't dogear pages like I do with older once. I'll just memorize the page I'm on, or leave it open until I can start reading again. And if they're really good, and no longer than three-hundred pages, I'll just read them in one day and have no need for dogearing. But I hate bookmarks, for some odd reason. I can never remember to take them out of library books before I turn them in.

I don't really use bookmarks. I just remember the page number, and if that fails--which it often does (I just can't remember things like that, for some reason)--I just remember the latest major event and work my way back to where I was reading from there.

When I was smaller, I'd use everything I saw for a bookmark. Which, unfortunately, could damage the book, leading to an incredibly ticked parent and a ground me.

So eventually I learned how to do without them, and that was that.
