James sama the only person I know who would summon a demon and would have the means is well she is Powerful and even she didn't summon a lesser demon till she knew more binding abilitys but demons on the whole are to chaotic to control they think only of killiong and bringing pain they arent like devils who come for your soul they just want you dead Yeah, the D&D monster manual has some pretty good information on the differentiations between demons and devils. I read it, too. rofl

In ceremonial magic, demons are summoned because of the influence they tend to exert over a person's mind. I want to explain this topic in a way that everyone can understand demons, so here I go...
Demons are the embodied creations of negative emotions. They are beings of the chaotic bend of evil who strive to control and destroy life (which makes them evil). It is the negative side of human emotions concentrated regularly by the mind that creates demons. However in their infant forms they are still attached to the mind that gave birth to them, because in order to manifest they must meet only the requirements as set forth by the mind that created them. But when these conditions of manifestation are passed on to other groups of minds, the demon no longer needs the original mind as there is more energy coming to it. After a while, the demon will no longer need the mental energy as it will possess enough power to exist on its own. Demonic possession occurs when a person's psychic defenses diminish to a point to allow the build-up of negativity (demon) to assum control of the person.
There are many kinds of demons, but two main types: inner demons and world (outer) demons. Inner demons are the demons that feed on the negative energy of a particular person. These demons cannot pass from person to person because they are only concepts with conditions particular only to the person they inhabit, and cannot be wholly realized outside of said individual. When an inner demon is given a name, they now have a concept that is communicable to others, and they become a world demon. World demons have names, traits, and characteristics that are unique to them and that are widely recognized by many groups of people. There are many kinds of world demons, each with its own name and characteristics. At this stage, they have gone beyond being thoughtforms controllable by their creator's will, and they can manifest on their own with no further input from anyone, and they seek to expand their own domains by inciting in other humans their influence.
The stuff that the writers of books of demons are talking about are world demons that are so complex as to be inexplicably linked to our world in some way. You don't just get rid of them because it's nearly impossible to do so without destroying the whole world (too many people acknowledge their existence for them to be destroyed; destroy the world, and you destroy all demons, angels, gods, and everything else).
Theurgists seek to gain control of of their inner demons as a means of developing their wills for magic, the idea being that it's more difficult to control the inner world (including demons) than it is to control the outer world.
Why would you conjure a demon? To gain control of it. Particularly, you would call your own inner demon into a circle and put it under your control so that you can move beyond it and go on and develop your power and eliminate its influence on your mind. Demons are ruled by the mind, as they spring from the mind, therefore to fight a demon, you must have a strong will and a strong mind for the task.
We magical people encounter demons in all sorts of ways. They are the things that we know we shouldn't do but we do anyway. They are those extreme feelings of hatred and fear that go above and beyond phobia and become a sickening feeling of hatred.

That was really informative.. Thank you guys for always giving out info...it really helps.
And sometimes if you can name your inner demons, it helps you to be able to rid yourself of them.

Library? Books? Where? Sorry, I love books though... Actually yes, knowing the name of a thing allows you to affect it directly. The name is inexplicably tied to the thing, and it is how it identifies itself in the world. Library is a collection of books. I have a few books on the subject, but most of what I speak is personal experience. The rest is what I managed to piece together from my own personal resources on the subject of theurgy, which concerns itself with the conjuring of demons as a minor practice.

thanks for all the information.
speaking of demons i finally learned what a familiar is. from what ive read its a demon thats summoned to help a witch with her bidding and it can take the form of an animal. it works for blood.
please note ive only read one book with them in it so thats why its not alot of info.

They may work for blood, but you had best specify from where it is coming and the quantity or you may end up drained...
Best advice for working with demons is: DON'T!

Shanna66 thanks for all the information. speaking of demons i finally learned what a familiar is. from what ive read its a demon thats summoned to help a witch with her bidding and it can take the form of an animal. it works for blood. please note ive only read one book with them in it so thats why its not alot of info. Moo, in the Malleus Maleficarum and associated texts from The Dreaded Burning Times(trademark), yeah, familiars are demonic beings who suckle blood from the Devil's Mark/Some Sorta Special Teat (someone who's read more about the history of witchcraft could perhaps enlighten me there), but most folk nowadays define it as a spirit companion in the form of an animal, or even an actual animal, that helps with yer magick in some way. My mother, being the hardXcore woman she is, constantly refers to my cat as my familiar, even though she just kinda sits on my books and paper and stuff while I'm working, which isn't remotely helpful (the cat, I mean - not my mum. >_> )

Generally, isn't the dangerous thing about summoning demons the same thing about having a wild lion in the house? It's too powerful for most humans to control, and even if it's small and harmless to begin with, it has the propensity to grow into a serious, if not fatal, problem.

It's too powerful for most humans to control, and even if it's small and harmless to begin with, it has the propensity to grow into a serious, if not fatal, problem. Actually, yes, that's part of it. The primarily dangerous aspect of demons is their general chaotic nature. They incite within the minds of humans all those base, earthly thoughts and desires. Think of the seven deadly sins. All of those are affected by demons, and each has a place within the human mind. They are simply conditions under which we are all subject. When a demon acts on one of those conditions (among a variety of others), that person is said to only be incited to that end.
