"I thought you sssaid you didn't know what you were becoming?" he asked with a bit of a smirk. Only an eyelid twitched in response to the insult. Unbeknownst to Zach, over his past three changes, scattered parts of his prefrontal cortex had not been able to stand the strain of trying to meet his volatile serum halfway, warping some cells to the point of being useless.
"Shut up! Damnit, you don't know what you're talking about anyhow!" His tail switched back and forth on the ground, whipping even farther at the comment about the paper bag. "I know what it isss, though. You keep deluding yourssself into thinking you can get away from here. Think you'll get away and never have to sssee another half-human anything again, huh? But you can't leave. And you never will. I can't wait to sssee whatever ssstupid plansss you make fail - I'm sure the look on your facsse will be pricsselesss."

"I know what I'm not becoming," he retorted, though inwardly he cringed. Since when had he become so comfortable with discussing the transience of his appearance? Much as he hated to admit it, part of what Zach had been saying struck an echoing cord inside Gaius. What was he becoming? Wouldn't it be better to know his ultimate destiny? But it was hard for Gaius to think about becoming any less human. No, he was still human, despite the features. After all, having a tail didn't change that... right?
Zach's harsh words made Gaius's expression darken. He jabbed a finger at the dragon, his voice dangerously low as he spoke. "Wait. Just wait. Someday I'm going to get off this island - me and the others. It may take time - even years - but we'll do it. Nothing you say will change that."
With that bold declaration, Gaius turned on his heel and marched stiffly in the direction of the cafeteria, head held stubbornly high. Every muscle in his body was tensed and his nostrils flared wide as he huffed. And to add to his temper - all the while, he wasn't able to control the twitching movements of his back wings, which seemed to respond to his dark mood by flapping more.

"I'll believe it when I sssee it," he spat, glaring from beneath the brim at Gaius's retreating figure and energetic chicken wings. "In fact, go ahead and try. You'll jussst find out the hard way!" Zach closed his mouth, running his tongue along the inside curves of his sharp teeth and brooding. The bony frills slowly draped back down around his neck, devoid of a reason to stay spread. His tail and wings fell with them, leaving him in his usual crooked-necked slouch as he turned to walk away himself.
A defeated look crossed his unnatural features briefly, rolling away with a short sigh to be replaced by a sour expression. There were things he was too tired of questioning, points that Gaius had brought up that lacked simple explanations. It was pretty simple - unlike the islanders, Sabin didn't hate him. He'd been attacked so many times by various islanders that it seemed almost inevitable that he'd grow to despise them and what they stood for. No guilt wracked him for having transcended the common cause among islanders, to escape. Time and time again he'd learned by watching others in their failures that it was an impossible dream.
He reached up as though to brush hair away, but upon some sudden re-realization that there was none, his wrist twisted in a different direction. Clawed fingers propped the hat into position again, where it was hooked neatly between his ridged horns. He had left nothing behind in his past that was worth compromising what he had now. Even if he did have to go bald.
