Alex nodded and slowly. "Sure, I guess a walk wouldn't hurt. Its a good thing to do to keep your mind off of stuff." He wasn't really sure why he said the last part of that. Part of him wanted to comfort her since she seemed pretty much about to cry as they were sitting there. But the harsh reality of it was that there wasn't much anyone could do, not yet anyways, and thats where not dwelling on things played a big part. At least, he hoped that was right.
He slowly made his way down the cliff side, not moving to quickly. "I'm used to sitting around in one spot for a while, but since I don't have that to worry about, I guess its a good reason to at least head down." Alex held his coat close to his side, under his arm, but his thoughts were elsewhere, as he walked. He was trying to figure out something new to talk about, or at least something that might be distracting for a bit.
"So, who have you met around here anyways?" Alex secretly did a happy cheer inside his mind, realizing that talking about OTHERS was always a good way to point out how much better you were off than them, and that you also have similiar situations as well.

She nodded as she got up and walked beside him. She couldn't help but wonder at his balance, it was something she could only envy as she was pretty clutzy everywhere but a rocky area. It was odd, she'd trip over nothing in the middle of a flat floor or fall on her face getting into a car. She admitted it made for some funny stories but when people told them just to compare how red you went in comparison to the rumours got a little annoying.
"So, who have you met around here anyways?" Alex asked.
Alcyone looked up, brought out of her reverie, "No one, really, except for who I assume is a highup person in Feral Labs and a couple others I can't remember the names of." She looked sheepish, "I'm horrible at names, so I'll likely forget yours too. But I'm excellent with faces. I don't forget those.... And definitely not theirs, they're the ones who told me about the island." She trailed off, remembering the thunderstruck feeling that had engulfed her followed by a vortex of conflicting emotions. It had been a horrible moment. "After that, I kind of became a hermit I guess you could say. That's why you startled me so much when you walked by. I haven't talked to anyone in a couple days..." She smiled, "Why do you ask?"

"Why?", he asks, as he continued to make his way down the hill. "I guess I was curious who you'd had met. Its not a big island but I guess its possible I haven't met everyone either, so I was sort of curious. And was also curious if you'd made any friends..."
His shoes slipped a bit as he made his way down, causing him to fall into the ground and slide a bit before he managed to stop his slow skid down the dirty cliffside. Of course this did nothing for keeping his clothes cleaned. Once he was sure he wasn't about to slide any more, he looked back over. "Having friends around here is a good thing. It means you don't have to face all this stuff alone. No sense trying to face the adversities of living here by oneself, when its possible to help others."
Alex pushed his glassed up further onto his nose, the mirrored shades hiding his eyes and the emotions they might betray. "Yeah, thats a really good speech, but I should bee-jway before I feel guiltier about what happened after Alys changed...", he thought to himself.

"Ah, I see. I-" She cut herself off as he slid down a ways. Concerned, she ran after him to make she he was alright. "You okay? Anything bleeding?" She held out a hand to help him get up, watching his movements to see if he'd fractured anything. She wasn't sure if the changes altered things like bone density. She hoped not because birds were notorious for easily broken limbs.
"To be honest, I'm not that great with people." She smiled, "You probably noticed that by now..."

He chuckled a bit, and slowly stood up. "I'm fine. Just lost my footing is all. Probably just ground about 2 weeks worth of dirt into these pants though in that slide though. Only injured is my pride." Alex tried to make light of his small spill. It wasn't really much for him to worry about.
"And who said you had to be great with people? Hell, I hardly dealt with any people on a real regular basis who weren't in the aviation field until I went into business for myself. Had to start dealing with folks. Didn't like them all, but sometimes you can't do everything yourself." He reached over and tapped her on the nose with his index finger since it wasn't as deformed as the three outer digits on his hand. "Got it?"
And with that, he slowly worked on heading back down the hill.

"Oh, that's good!" She sighed with relief, "I may have first aid but that doesn't mean I li-" She paused as he tapped her on the nose. Following the movement as he moved, her eyes went cross-eyed for second.
"I... I ah I... er... hmph." She ended helplessly, laughter in her voice. Shrugging, she caught up to him and tapped him on the shoulder, "You have a point. So make sure to follow your own advice, eh?"
She walked further down the slope and paused at a flat area, gesturing to the path and what lay beyond it, "I guess you're my guide. Lead on!" She smiled and waited for him to point the way. She was up for some adventure and hoped he was too.

He looked over to Alcyone, and smiled. "Uh, well, I'll try, but no promises. Unless I turn into some sort of flock bird, most other types of avians aren't exactly known for their social skills, but hey, I guess there's always a first for everything..." Alex was glad to be away from most of the loose and steep hillside, although now as he started to walk, his mind turned to his thought. "First for everything? Like being trapped on an island full of mutated folks, and becoming one of them? Yes... I guess even like that", he thought to himself.
"Lead on?" The question was more a reaction as he attention snapped back to the here and now. "Oh. Uh, well, actually, there is someplace not too far I'd like to go too, and since its not the village, I figure that would work..." And so he started down the foot path through the trees, heading towards the beach, not going too fast.

Alcyone watched him for a few moments as they walked, trying to decipher the thoughts that were obviously passing through his mind. She was pretty sure it had something to do with the changes, who wouldn't be even slightly disturbed by the island's fate?
"Don't worry. After all, you should never judge a book by it cover, right? Just because your body may be changing, doesn't mean you have to lose your humanity - the person behind the body." She spoke softly but earnestly, firmly believing the concept behind what she had said. She felt it was one of the few things that had helped her keep going back when her sister had been murdered. There has to be more than just a body, right? There has to be a soul that drives the body.... otherwise I'll never see my sister again.
It was her turn to snap out of her thoughts, "No problem! Wherever you think is best." She winked at him, "Not looking for trouble, though, right? I'm stronger than I look." She smiled broadly, indicating she was joking. She kept pace with him, shortening her long gait to match his own. It never failed to annoy her more than when someone walked ahead and talked back to someone. To her it was inexcusably rude. "So, can I ask where to, or is more of a surprise?"

Alex nodded some to the comments. It sounded like a good thought anyways. Maybe thats all that mattered. Only time would tell, but that was a ways off to worry about. So it was probably better to worry about something else, like the conversation.
He looked over to her, and smiled. "Oh, where we're going? Just to the beach. Nothing more dangerous there than hot beach sand, and that horrible squeaking sound you get when you step on the sound because its the really nice quartz sand." He chuckled a bit as he pushed some of the branches that hung across the foot path, as he looked over.
It wasn't like he was trying to be rude, he just had an issue with finding tree limbs that wanted to hit him, far too often for his own good. Just like the one he almost hit, ducking just before he did. "Oh. Watch the branches", he muttered a bit, although luckily the beach was jsut up ahead, so no more worries about tree limbs. "And no, its not a suprise. I just wanted to get something to drink, and its closer than going back to the village."

"Oh!" She chuckled, "I see." She looked off to the side at the scenery as they walked by, only half listening.
"What?" She turned to face forward just as one of the branches snapped back from Alex's passage and squared her soundly in the face. "Owww!" She clapped a hand to her nose, tears coming to the corner of her eyes. It had been more of a surprise then painful as the leaves slapped across her cheek. She kept going though, holding out an arm to push away any further attacking branches. "Drink?" She added, catching only the last few words.
What would the beach have that's drinkable? Must be a snack stand or something...

Alex blinks and winces as he realizes Alcyone just got hit in the face by a branch. Usually he's the one on the recieving end of those. "Uh yeah, maybe I should have warned you sooner about those..."
He chuckles a bit though, nodding. "Uh, yeah, its right over here." And lo' did it appear, the beach bar! Ok, it wasn't too much but it was a place to get a drink if nothing else. "The bar out here has a few things to drink for folks out this way... Me, I just want to get a coke. Would you like something?", he asks her. "If you need some bandages, they might have a first aid kit too."

"No no. I'm fine. Just a little startled." Her arms dropped back to her sides, and her face was a good red from wher the branch whipped her. Smiling, she nodded, "A drink sounds good. Depends on what they have though."
She paused, wondering, "Er, do we have to pay for things like that here?" If they did she wasn't going to buy anything. The labs were experimenting on people and making them pay for their luxuries would instantly anger her. Alcyone hadn't been around the main areas of the Island as of yet, keeping mostly to her complex.

"I think they have quite a bit. Alcoholic, non-alcoholic. Stuff in general." He pops behind the bar counter and gets out a diet coke from the fridge. "Ah. And pay? Nah, the folks up at the labs put this stuff down here to keep us happy or something. Not like there's much use for money around these parts anyways."
Alex popped the top on the coke can, and took a long slow sip from the can. "Other villagers usually have parties or get togethers near here, since there's usually something to drink." He sipped the coke a bit more and looked out over the waves, before looking back. "So what will you have to drink?", he asks.

"Ah, lemme see." She hopped up onto the counter and peered around Alex into the fridge. "Oh, that's new. Never had that before." She pointed to a pink-coloured can with what appeared to be some sort of berry on the label. "I'll take that."
She followed his gaze out to sea and frowned. It looked so inviting in its vastness and apparent calm. A stark contrast to the world the Islanders lived in, she noted. "Say, why hasn't anyone built a ship or something to get away? There's got to be something with some sort of construction or engineering experience here..." She trailed off, as she revelled in the embrace of the sun. Beaches always made her happier. It was like being on the edge of the world to her. You never knew what would approach from across the horizon.

He hands her the drink and sips his own as he listens to her. He relaxes some, as he looks back out at the water, and chuckles. "Well, considering we're all being monitored, I'd guess anything we'd tried to make wouldn't really work. You know, some guys in jeeps show up and make sure that it doesn't go far or something."
He looks down into the can a bit and shrugs, "This has been going on for a while, and so I wouldn't doubt that stuff hasn't been treid before. So yeah..." He downs the rest of the soda and sighs softly. "At least the local is nice."
