Ghost of the Past

Calm had settled over their household, the married couple having finally gotten Recayr to stop one of his few wailing sessions. The man leaned against their couch from his seat on the floor, a happy sigh escaping his lips as he peered at their demon. He hadn't told Sapheria of how he had found the red-headed boy, merely saying that the child had been abandoned with a note requesting aid for the boy. He smiled warmly at her, green eyes sparkling merrily. The morning sun filtered in through the windows, lighting up their living room.

For the first time in a while, the house was calm again. Sapheria had to admit, she loved her new 'son' dearly. But questions had buzzed in her mind ever since Toran had brought home the little fox-boy. She wouldn't dare turn the little boy out, but she still had unanwserable questions about Recayr. Sapheria finally sat down next to Toran, smiling back at him with the same undying warmth from before they were even married. She was glad this morning seemed to be an easy, quiet one to be able to relax.

Toran smiled back at his wife, placing an arm around her shoulder and giving her a small squeeze. "Now wasn't that fun?" He asked lightly, his eyes remaining on her. She was so beautiful... and he so lucky. The moment of perfection and tranquility swirled into nothingness as the doorbell rang. "I'll get it." He announced, swiftly getting up and walking to the front door. As he opened it, he was suddenly widening his eyes at this ghost from his past standing on their front porch, his blood running cold.

The man who stood there was as tall as the younger man, darker in skin tone. His black hair came to his shoulders, green eyes turned downwards in dissinterest towards a smoking cigarette. "Boy." His voice dripped the poisonous hate that Toran remembered so vividly, the man's identical shaded eyes meeting his own. He felt frozen in place, unable to slam the door like his mind and soul screamed for him to do.

Sapheria watched her husband get up, following Toran with her eyes went to anwser the door until he was past her line of sight. She scooped up Recayr--who was now on the verge of sleep--and cradled him gently. Staying against the base of the couch, Sapheria gently rocked Recayr and hummed softly till his eyes closed in sleep.

The much hated man walked closer until finally something in Toran's mind clicked. Throwing the door violently, he managed to slam it into the outstretched hand that managed to keep it open. There were questions Toran wanted answers to, but most of them being shouted would alarm Sapheria in ways he wasn't willing to make her think about. The door swung back open lazily, the other man ust outside his door now, leaning against the frame. "So, boy, you're still alive." The comment hung in the air.

"Go away." Toran said coldly, refusing his urge to glance at his wife and 'son'.

Her hearing pricked more, hearing the door slam. The sound made her visably wince, and she had to make sure the noise hadn't startled Recayr awake. Thankfully, however, the boy was sleeping soundly. Sapheria held her 'son' closer to her, before oh-so-slowly starting to stand up. She tried to peer at the door without being seen, afraid and curious at what was going on.

The man laughed at the authority in the younger's voice, walking into the house and into vision. "Trying to sound authorative? You know, being intimidating never was your strong point."

"What do you want?" Toran growled, still backing up until the man stopped moving.

"Who is this?" Toran's head jerked, spotting what the man had just seen. "I suppose the word was true. Went and got married, did you, boy?" His eyes scanned the woman in front of him, landing on the child in her arms.

Icy blue eyes stayed on the man as soon as he came into view. She could feel the man size her up, and she involuntarily took a step backwards--a large slip from her past. She held her ground after that, shifting Recayr so that his face wasn't visable to whoever had come Toran and her's home.

Her icy blue eyes flickered over to Toran, her eyes trying to ask a million questions in a moment. "Toran...?"

The man frowned slightly at the child, looking her over for hidden signs of the fox-like traits the child showed. He glanced out of the corner of his eye, and Toran noticed that somewhere along the way, the man had lost his cigarette.

Toran walked over to stand by Sapheria, growling quietly. "Meet my father."

Sapheria let her gaze linger on Toran, before switching to the man infront of her. Now that she thought about it, the man was her father-in-law. "...Pleased to meet you.." She offered him a half of a smile before her gaze flickered down at Recayr, who had whimpered and snuggled more into her to stay warm.

Toran's father continued to critically eye his daughter-in-law, finally just shrugging it off. "I suppose it must be." If that's who you married, he added silently, glancing at the couple. "What's your name, missus?" He didn't finish the question for several reasons. First and foremost was that he wasn't sure if the boy still had taken his last name. "And the child's?"

"What do you want?" Toran repeated again, unsure of why this one had spent his time tracking him down. He hadn't seen him for over... thirteen years...

Sapheria let her gaze rise up to the man, faltering to stay up before looking away. "I'm Sapheria.. and he is Recayr.." She murmured softly, keeping her gaze at the sleeping child in her arms for a moment, before looking over at Toran.

"Sapheria and Recayr? Lovely names," He commented, ignoring his offspring in favor of his grandson and the boy's mother. "I am Tion and curious." He said, resisting a small temptation to reach out and give the little boy's fox ears a tweak. "He looks nothing like either of you." Tion glanced about, as if expecting to see others running about. "To answer your question, boy, I came to see your new family. Is that so wrong?" The malice has vanished nearly completely for his voice, but the way his eyes gleamed for the briefest of moments sent chills up Toran's spine.

"I guess not," Toran growled quietly, resisting an urge to glare. If he did want peace... but hadn't that ship sailed aeons ago?

"Thank you..." Sapheria gave him a soft smile. She should at least be on friendly terms with her father-in-law, shouldn't she? "Pleased to meet you, Tion." At his comment about the difference in looks between them and their 'son', her face faultered. How was she supossed to explain that? Actually, she really couldn't...

At the look on her face, Tion managed to bring up a certain thought. If Toran thought this child was biologically his, then the boy was certainly far more stupid than his father could have ever imagined. "You're welcome." He smiled at the child, a bit at ease now that he had it figured out that he wasn't quite the grandfather he thought he was.
