As per the Qur'an, you're allowed to have friends in other religions so long as they are not part of a nation/religion that is at war with Islam "Allah forbids you not respecting those who fight you not for religion, nor drive you forth from your homes, that you show them kindness and deal with them justly. Surely Allah loves the doers of justice. Allah forbids you only respecting those who fight you for religion, and drive you forth from your homes and help (others) in your expulsion, that you make friends of them; and whoever makes friends of them, these are the wrongdoers." (60:8, 9)

And in regards to marriage, it is said to be something a Muslim should not do "And marry not the idolatresses until they believe; and certainly a believing maid is better than an idolatress even though she please you. Nor give (believing women) in marriage to idolaters until they believe, and certainly a believing slave is better than an idolater, even though he please you. These invite to the Fire and Allah invites to the Garden and to forgiveness by His will and He makes clear His messages to men that they may be mindful." (2:221)

Of course, that technically only speaks of idolaters.

I think it was stated above... or something. That Muslim men can marry devout christians and jews (not zoroastrians.. darn D smile , as long as they ARE devout and such. Not the womens, in fear of having them forced physically or such to do something not acceptable by Islam... like.. converting.

Quote:

“Lawful unto you in marriage are chaste women who are believers and chaste women among the people of the book”. (Surah al-Ma’idah, verse 5).

My translation of the Qur'an doesn't translate it like that. I'll check again though, mayhap I missed it.

Ah, my bad. I cut down the verse to only the part that was relevant to the subject. I also checked to see if the 5th verse was any different in other translations. In the translation by Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali + Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan, the entire verse goes as:

Quote:
"Made lawful to you this day are all that are At-Tayyibat (All kinds of permissable foods). The food of the people of the scripture is lawful to you and yours lawful to them. (Lawful to you in marriage) are chaste women from the believers and chaste women from those who were given the Scripture before your time when you have given their due Mahr (Bridal-money given by the husand to his wife at the time of marriage), desiring chastity (i.e. taking them in legal wedlock) not committing illegal secual intercourse, nor taking them as girl-friends. And whosoever disbelieves in Faith, then fruitless is his work; And in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.

As far as the two translations I've come across, it seems to give the same message.
