the guide i hope will cover most of the world its important for ppl to know about the many myths in the world who knows there might be a myth about ur area the only myths in my area are ogopogo, champy, bigfoot, and the other canadian myths.
heres one that i found about native americains in canada
http://www.ucalgary.ca/applied_history/tutor/firstnations/tsimshian.html
it speaks of the rebirth of a boy who then created the new world.
i am very fond of native myths and legends and would like to see more in the guide if a get permision to add some more.

In a Mythology group IRL we chose a topic and each of us takes on a different part of the world for that topic. I usually do Nordic because I enjoy in it. However, you learn not to expect to much because people often promise to do things they can't handle. Including me. And I'm really back on my work with it too.

Uruviel divided the areas into:
1.) Fantasy: Tolkien, Discworld, Wheel of Time
2.) Worldwide relegions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam (+ sects)
3.) Ancient Mediterranean: Greeks, Romans, Etruscans
4.) Northern Myths: Nordic, Finnish, Estonian - Helmorana
5.) Western Europe: Celts, Anglo-Saxon myths (all the areas in GB, France, Basques)- WitchBoy
6.) Slavic Mythology: All the Slavic countries, including the Baltic- Helmorana
7.) Middle East: Egypt, Mesopotamia (Sumeria, Babylon, Asiria)
8.) Far East: Persia, India (Hindu)
9.) Eastern Asia: China, Japan, Korea (Budism, Shintoism...) - Oshun
10.) African tribes: Ashanti, Yoruba, Somali, Zulu
11.) Latin America: Maias, Aztecs, Inkas
12.) Northern America: American Indians, Escimos (Inuits) - And darkrock took Canada
13.) Oceania: Aborigines, Maori, polinesian myths...

Then we all pick one topic and divide it around the globe. razz
The options are endless... From finding the goddesses and gods of love in all those, to as we did, finding out how the world started...

Like I said, I'm happy to help, but I suggest whoever took the creation of this guide upon themselves to do a little guiding. What it's supposed to look like, give out things to look up that are needed and so on. I could be wrong, but I think it was darkrock64.

And there are myths about probably most of the world. Perhaps not every town, but if you pick a town and give it a 10km radium, you're bound to stumble upon a few stories. There's quite a few of them here... But those aren't myths. They're just folk stories, some legends. Mythology deals with the creation of the world/ending of the world and things in between.

to british colombia.
all other parts of canada are free for the choosing.

No, because the topic is still unclear.

I won't do a general overview of Nordic relegions because it can be found anywhere and it is starting to bore me. It's always the same things you read. If there's a more specific topic then yes, I can't wait. And I'll either take on Northern Europe and if the topic isn't too big I can also do the Slavs, since I live in the area.

But I need a topic. I won't do another short version of Edda or Kalevala. It has been overdone.

we have also been givin the ok to include legends from around the globe
but i would prefur legends that have to do with magick and cultural beleaf (i hope i spelled that correct) cultural for example this one legend i heard of in class about a demonic horse that rampaged across quebec and was later
thrown into a cravace in the ground where a cross (a cross because this is a legend that took place around the time where most of canada was catholic) was placed atop the cravace to seal the demon away forever.
you know legends like that or better ones that legend was kinda of a bad example but u get the point right? i hope.
also i would like to include mythological creatures and other forms of mythological life such as mandrake, hydra, leviathan, basalisk, salamander... u know that kind of stuff the leviathan is optional because its hard to find good info on it.

Hmm. [nods] This all sounds good. Just provide a warning to being gullible - believing everything you read.

But, I'd love to see you two work together, and put your differences aside. whee [snigger] I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.

So yes. When you're ready, head over to the Academy.

Ok, what do you say we do what the title says and just describe the mythological beings for each geographical area?

I'll PM all the applicants and those who offered help.

I can take Eastern Asia if you don't have a taker for that section of the globe. It's really interesting to pass on knowledge to those who actually want it. It will be slightly difficult to find in-depth books and websites about Shintoism that most will be able to read (i.e. not in Japanese). However, I already own 3 books about Shintoism, so at least I have a starting point.

Anyway, just let me know if you would like my help.

Oshun, of course we'd like your help smile Eastern Asia is still free and you're very welcome to do it! I'll just put your name in the top post, if you don't mind? (And everybody else's) Just so we all know which topics are taken and which are free.

Are you taking the entire Eastern Asia or Shintoism alone? smile

I'll take Eastern Asia. Shintoism is an interesting practice, but like I said, the amount of information on it that is available to English-reading people is small. Where are we going to be posting the information we find?
