And if you dont know what Im talking about, you are a depraved human being.
I think you mean 'deprived'. Unless you really want to call people insane for not hearing of a game. o.O

Okay, so, I know its been a while since I last made a rant, but I've had alot to think about. And now, as you will see, to write about. After thinking about all of this, I have decided that this next rant, will be, more or less, about a steady decline. And, unfortunately, alot of it comes from our dear friend, Sony.

I know its damn well known that I dont like Sony. As a matter of fact, I personally, cant stand them. However, alot more people like them then dont. So, I suppose thats good for them. Sony has something that neither Nintendo, nor Microsoft has ever had. A large and seemingly unstoppable name.

Yes, Microsoft is Microsoft, but, does anyone under 17 own a Microsoft product? Probably not. Sony has CD players, DVD players, cell phones, TVs, and computers. And, as we know, video game systems. Oh, excuse me, "entertainment supercomputers." Or, as I like to call it, bullshit.

Yes, its bullshit. You want to know why? Because Sony doesnt give a rats a** about games. At all. Never have. In case you havent realized it yet, gaming is cool right now. The Xbox 360 special was on Mtv. Its cool to play games. Really cool. Its the big thing right now. Its not that I care. Hell, most if not all of the subcultures I've been a part of have been raped by pop culture. I am punk, I am a gamer, I am a skater. All of these sub cultures have been almost destroyed by pop culture. But, I dont care about that anymore. I know who I am, and I dont care who thinks they are like me, or are gamers, or are punk, because in the end, they arent. And they will look back, in 20 years, when their 15 year olds find their parents old yearbooks. Their kids will say "Dad, you guys WORE stud belts back then?"

They will laugh and say "Yeah, those were all the rage. Everyone was doing it."

Ive resigned myself to this fact. I wont, and you wont get away from it. But we, as the real gamers, or punks, or homosexuals, or goths, or skaters, or thugs, will just have to persevere, and know where its real.

Anyway, back on track here. Sony knows this, and knows it damn well. Its not that I care. Because I dont. What I care about, is that more and more people aren't going to know what gaming is all about. I fear that people will see the PS3, and think "Yeah, gaming isnt even gaming. Its all about entertainment supercomputers." And thats a bunch of bullshit. Sony is trying so damn hard NOT to make a gaming console. Why? ******** if I know. But they do. Will the PS3 succed? Maybe. Im not sure. This whole blu-ray vs. HD-DVD bullshit is really getting on my nerves. I dont care. I just want to play games. Dont drag this new media format crap into gaming. It doesnt matter. It really doesnt. Do I care about my games being pretty? Yeah. And you do too. Dont lie about it. Do they all have to be realistic? Hell no. Just pretty.

Why dont I put some of this blame on Gates and co.? Because, all that they want to do actually has something to do with gaming. The harddrive, online connection, camera, microphone set, its all gaming related. Mostly to Xbox Live. And thats okay. If you want to add all types of gizmos and s**t to a system, then thats cool. Just make sure it PLAYS GAMES.

Here's where Sony really gets my goat. They refuse to say that the PS3 is a console. But you know where it was revealed? Yeah, E3. Where is it going to be sold? Yeah, the game stores, the game sections at Best Buy and Wal-Mart. So, if they want this to be an "entertainment supercomputer" get it the ******** out of the consoles. Move it over to the computer stores. Sell them in Comp USA.

The decline. Will it happen? Yeah. Will the market crash? Probably. Will it happen soon? Probably. See, noones ever been on top of the gaming consoles for more then 2 generations. Noone. Also, noones ever come back to be on top after they fall. This history indicates two things. Nintendo will never be number one again, and Microsoft will be number one this generation. IF history has some merit. Which I would think it does.

At a website called www.pointlesswasteoftime.com an article was recently posted. It was called the "Gamers Manifesto". And John, the writer, brought up many, many great points. One of which, I want to talk about. John talks about, among many other wonderful, wonderful things, the first video game crash in the early 80s. When gamers realized that games were jsut being remade over and over with different colors, people stopped playing. They didnt stop playing one game in favor of another, they stopped playing all together. What am I getting at? GTA, Scarface, True Crime, The Godfather game, 25 to Life, and many others, its all the same. Hell, the last 3 GTAs have been the same damn game. Different missions. Who-hoo.

This is our generations Missle Command, and Tank, and Space Invaders. We are getting a whole lot of the same thing. This is where the decline will start. Many, many companies are just flat out running out of ideas. This is a bad, bad thing.

So, gamers, hold on. We are in for some serious turbulence coming up. And someones gonna fall this generation. Someone. Or, at least, we will see the start of someone falling. In the meantime, save your bucks, and play something original. Its all we have left.

Maaaan, I didn't even notice you posted this rant.

As much as you are right about Sony, they stil do have a lot of the best games on them... Most of the good RPGs (spanning both PS1 and PS2), the originals of series like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid. Yeah, these games came out on other systems, but mostly everyone was playing them on Sony's. Even the PS2 has some awesome things, like Katamari, Kingdom Hearts, and ICO, even though I didn't quite have the patience for that game. -_-;

My biggest problem with Sony is almost what yours is. I loathe Sony because of their -quality-. Seriously. I suppose it goes hand-in-hand with the not really caring about gamers, but their systems break SO OFTEN. We nicknamed the defective bin at the EB I worked at The Sony Graveyard, because that's mostly what it was. PS2s and PSPs with a few Xbox's (mostly failed hard drives) and an occasional gamecube. Sony's quality has gone down because they -know- they have the biggest, most popular arsenal of games, so if someone's system breaks, they'll shell out and buy another one because of all the games. The one girl I worked with went through 6 PS2s, and the one guy was on his 3rd PSP when he finally gave up an traded it in before it died again.

As far as all games being the same... yeah. We had a huge discussion about that in my Videogame Design class, which was basically the teacher telling us how hard it was to get and original idea out unless your name is Wright, Miers, or Miyamoto. Because of how much money goes into marketing and whatnot, most companies don't want to take risks. They'd rather produce the same crap over and over as long as they know it'll sell reasonabll well than rick losing a bit of money over a game that -could- go big, or could flop completely.

It's mostly that last thing alone that keeps me loyal to Nintendo. They're willing to take the risks. They're willing to try things fun and different. I have more Gamecube games than I do PS2, and most of them are all fun multiplayer games. Mario Party, Wario Ware, Mario Kart... all great games to play with a bunch of friends... Sony just doesn't have that.

And as far as X-box goes... not a fan. I loathe it, and probably will never own one.

Don't ask me why. I just don't like it.

I agree with Baker and Traj. I feel like I've had games torn from me and I'm not a big Sony fan. Am I mad that they get some of the best RPG games? Yes, I am. I believe that they get them solely on the fact that they are Sony, that the games will sell because it's on a PS2, PSP, whatever. I'm also a Nintendo fan because they do deviate from the norm. Although it saddens me that gaming will crash and probably soon as Baker pointed out, I can only hope that it will come back to the way it used to be, about the fun in gaming and not just graphics or the name slapped on the front.
I want my videogames back from all these people that have only ever owned a PS2 or X-box and think Sony and Microsoft are gods. I'm not including Nintendo because less people own a Gamecube because it lacks Final Fantasy games or GTA, other crap like that. I've noticed that games are just repeats or sequels now, there's no new blood in the gaming industry. It's just refuse recycled many times to make money.
Yah, I'm biased to Nintendo. But that's because they seem to be the only ones trying new things and not simply catering to the moronic testosterone packed teenage males that make up a large part of the market nowadays.
