the "why am I so spineless..." scene made me wonder too. I couldn't help but think that he was seriously cursing himself for not being able to hurt Noin but I really believe he loved her...so maybe there is another meaning behind it. I, too, am eager to hear other opinions.

To me, it seemed that he was completely serious about the "no chivalry" idea. His battle was over...his kingdom fallen again and all was lost to him...so he...feeling he had nothing to lose...would give up all in order to become the personification of evil in order to save humanity...
In order to make such a sacrifice, he wanted to eradicate all distractions...Noin proved to be one of those distractions because he couldn't deny his feelings for her. I think he was simply battling his own feelings of wanting to do what he felt was necessary for peace and not wanting to hurt Noin...

Could be, but I got the feeling that he was mad at himself for caring that much...or at least for allowing himself to put her wellbeing before his cause...I didn't think the comment was aimed at how he hurt her although I don't doubt he felt bad about it! (He should have, anyways).
I could always be wrong, though...hehe
