I think, for me, part of the reason Archie has lost it's overall spark is simply this--I grew up. When I was a kid I'd squeal every month over the new Sonic issue and read it over and over. I've also been jaded by several events both direct and indirectly related to the book (and Sonic in general). I'm still a fan, it's still something I love, but the spark that drove obsession is nearly gone.

I dont think age has to do with the crummyness of the recent story lines. I re-read all my past issues and wnjoy them more than I did the more recent ones. And when I was a kid, I had no idea what I was reading and just like the animals in it. I used to draw on my comics! But later when I started growing up I started seeing the deep plots and the adventures that really hooked me! Thats not there anymore it seems without some cheap effect is used.

I know what you mean. I was 18 when I started importing Archie, so I can't really comment on back issues that I've read as an adult.

But when it came to Fleetway in the UK, it's only been in looking back over my collection that I've realised just how tightly a lot of the plots were put together.

I think that, as I've mentioned before, Penders is doing here what Kitching did there: trying to be too clever and up himself for his own good, and creating these huge, drawn-out stories which're supposed to mean something later, but with no hint of a pay-off in their actual execution.

Take the current Shadow storyline, for instance. Penders claims (although we all know that Penders would claim that the world was flat and the moon was cheese if he thought it could get him some gain in the short term stare ) that the current multi-parter is a prelude to something; but if you're not online and familiar enough with the fandom to know where to find it, I've seen far too many people say that it has no discernible point.

The whole comic, despite Pellerito's best efforts, is going to be a Penders/Chacon vanity project initiated by Gabrie, until the current story backlog can be worked through.

I agree. Although I've only been a fan of the comic since I bought Issue #57 when I was, like, eight, I compare my Issue #74 to my Issue #135, and I wonder what happened. The art is worse, the storyline is - cheesy (I mean, come on, Knuckles back from the dead? The Chosen One? Get real!) - and where did all of the raw action, the raging, deep emotions, and the better story go?

I just think it died with JFG. The stories now are mostly shiny, highly polished heaps of garbage. Maybe I'm alone, but I always thought that he did a good job! Honestly, I've seen much worse comics. The stories just don't do it for me anymore. There's nothing under the surface; what you read is what you get. It's kind of sad that my favourite comic is going down the drain like this. My dream is to be an artist there, and if there isn't a comic left to work at, I honestly think I'll be heartbroken.

"The Chosen One" was a plot point first introduced back in issue 28, over a decade ago, so it's hardly new. And Green Knux was Penders' idea (hence my griping about that guy's ego sad )

Again, I know it's just my opinion, but I don't think that the comic's died with JFG - I think he's the guy who's killed it. Pellerito isn't the guy responsible for the current run of stories, which will've been put in place months in advance. Comics plan things out up to three years ahead.

Looking at the current run of stories, I honestly don't think it was any accident that Gabrie left the job when he did. I'm just shocked that whoever Pellerito's senior is is inflexible enough to insist on runing the last of Gabrie's crap anyway.

Yeah, I suppose you're right; I haven't been following the comic that well due to lack of funds and a conveniently located store that actually has Sonic in stock. I don't have the excuse of importing, either; I live in Canada, and apparantly, Sonic is widely sold (Yeah, right; I had to go into TOronto to get Issue #144! That's 40 min. away!). I just hope the story improves when JFG's story run is over.

I only have the comics with Shadow in them. I don't really like the unoffical characters. Like sally, jullie-su, bunnie, and mina.

To be honest, I don't like the way that Mr. Echidna Fetish portrays Shadow. Shadow's one of the candidates for the ULF - he shouldn't be seriously inconvenienced by having to fight a middle-aged echidna, whether they've got guardian lineage or not.

Yes I think Penders has worn out his welcome and needs to get a new job because he is killing the comic, but I have to say he did put out issues 47-50 and even though they changed the course of the whole series they weren't bad.

I'm glad the whole chosen one story arc is over. I don't think well see Morgule anytime soon. the comic seems to be getting better as more new artists are being brought on and I hope it continues.

on another note intierly. I will always say Sally is my favorite of the Archie charecters, and even though they have made her a bit of a b***h making Sonic chose her or being a hero I think it makes for a good story

there My sensless rambeling is over

I think I said before that I actually find Sally a much more interesting character now that the consequences of having had her head screwed with in ways that the UN would throw a fit over (child soldiers, anyone?) for fifteen years're actually hitting her, and we're seeing her actually have realistic reactions to the situations she's in, rather than ignoring it or shrugging it off.

Speaking as someone coping with depression myself, I like how Bollers introduced us to that.

EDIT: Found my earlier post.
