"I'm from Washington state... I lived at home with mom and dad.. and was getting ready for college... I... never really had many friends... durning school, I was taking a lot of very advanced classes... I was mostly by myself." She looked down, "So at school, I never really got to know anyone... at home, mom and dad were both working from about noon to midnight, every day... so I very rarely got to see them, they weren't up by the time I left. I stayed at home... talking on the internet, playing videogames, reading books... nerdy stuff." She smiled softly, "I was your perfect deffinition of loner. I thought I had a pretty good life... even though I was very, very lonely."

She sighed before continuing, "My friends online always talked about their boyfriends and girlfriends... and I always felt left out. I was also fairly convinced that... well... a girl or guy... attracted to me? Come, now... that'd never happen... at least, not until like.. college, maybe." She had a slight smile on her face. It looked like she honestly believed this, and had told herself as such many times.

Katherine was a bit surprised at how open Linany was, but didn't really mind. The girl seemed to truly believe that people wouldn't be interested in her, so it wasn't strange that she would be willing to talk to someone who was.

"Well, I think you're pretty," Katherine replied, considering Linany's words on her lack of relationships. Granted, Kat was a straight female, but she was a good judge of appearances. She shrugged. "I don't know. I've never really had a lot of relationships...I've only had a few, and none of them were serious or anything...but I'm kind of lazy when it comes to people," she admitted. "But hey...you never know what'll happen. Especially when your life turns into something out of a crazy movie," she said with a smile.

Linany laughed softly, "Yeah... who knows what'll happen.." She stopped and thought for a minute, then slowly spoke again, with the same soft tone of voice, "Um.. Katherine? What was it like... at your home?" She asked her, curious.

At this question, Katherine's smile faded and she looked away, not because it made her sad (necessarily), but because it was difficult to explain. After a moment of gathering her thoughts, she turned back to Linany.

"Well...I guess I grew up pretty normally, at first, but my mom died when I was ten and my dad disappeared after that," she said hurriedly, wanting to give the shortest version possible. "After that, I moved in with my aunt, uncle, and three cousins. And I guess everything was pretty average, you know, high school, and all that. I guess I wasn't the best student, or the most popular or anything, but I had some friends, and I got by. I just've never been one to really bother putting a lot of effort into anything," Katherine said honestly. "Now, I'm starting to think maybe I should have."

She didn't regret anything, really. But it was kind of sad to think that she had wasted the last 10 years of her life. "I guess I was just never very motivated," she added. Thinking about it, she realized just how much of a brat she sounded like. She pushed that thought aside, doing her best to not think of things like that.

Linany nodded slowly. 'She didn't seem to like to talk about herself much... oh well.'

Linany spoke up after a few seconds of silence, "So.. what exactly does the first shot do to you? And how many are there after that...?" How long will I be in suspence of what I'm going to me, and how long will it take until the changes start showing themselves...?" She realized that she had too many questions, but she figured that it'd be best to get them out of the way right now.

Katherine relaxed a bit, glad to not be in the spotlight anymore. She had nothing to hide, but...there were definitely things she preferred to not think about.

"The first shot is your first transformation. I don't know exactly how much changes, but I don't think it's too bad compared to the others," she said, thinking about the few people she had met and the various stages they were in. "The people I spoke to weren't entirely sure, but rumor has it there are four transformation shots, and then the preparation one that you just got." She shook her head. "I'm not sure how long it takes for the changes to manifest themselves, but once it's all over, you're supposed to look exactly like your animal, only you can still talk, and you still kind of have hands. Oh, and you can walk like a human. Or at least, that's the way it's supposed to go," she added, thinking about the coyote islander she had heard about.

"I've also heard that sometimes, your animal's instincts get into your mind. Like, you know...if your animal is a predator, you start to crave raw meat," she added with a small frown. "But on the bright side, you can get pretty much anything you want here. As long as you don't annoy the doctors, they'll get you anything you ask for."

She nodded slowly, "Very.. odd.... and.. the preparation shot just does that? Prepare your body?" She thought about it again, and asked another question, "Have you heard how much the changes hurt...? Like.. growing a tail, or your hands changing into paws?"
PostPosted: Mon Sep 04, 2006 4:26 pm

"Well, I don't really know any of the mechanics of it," Katherine admitted. She didn't actually care what the chemicals were doing...the fact remained that they were doing things she couldn't stop, and since she couldn't do anything about it, why bother finding out more?

As for the pain of the changes..."I've heard that they're pretty painful," she answered. "I haven't asked for an in-depth description or anything, but most people have just said that it hurts like hell. And I guess that would make sense, I mean, with you bones growing all of a sudden, and...stuff." Katherine began to feel like a bit of an idiot for not bothering to ask about any of this. Perhaps she should start making the effort to familiarize herself with the details of the situation. After all, she was only getting deeper into it, and time would only make that worse.

Linany nodded, "I think I'll research some of this later then.." She thought about it, "Man... I hate pain..." She shivered, "I hope I get some sort of lucky un-painful one..." She smiled very softly.

"Hey.. um... later... would you.. um... want to show me around this island? And introduce me to some of the people...?" She smiled gently. She took this time to really look and examine Katherine, as she hadn't really before, she was too caught off guard by someone walking to talk to her. 'She's... pretty cute...' she thought to herself.

Pulling herself away from thoughts about her own laziness in finding out details, Katherine considered Linany's next question. While her first instinct was to lie and say, "No, I have things to do," the truth was that there really was nothing at all to do, and sitting alone in one's duplex got boring. And she wasn't quite brave enough to simply wander about the village on her own just yet.

"Sure, I can show you around," Kat replied, momentarily wondering whether or not she knew the place well enough herself. "And yeah...I don't remember where everyone I met lives, but we can stop in at a few of the duplexes I remember."

Linany smiled, "Kay!" She was a little excited to meet other people, she'd never really been introduced to other people before. And besides, it'd be a good chance to do some research about these odd transformations.

Linany had one last question, "Oh, Katherine, do you know where our bags go? You know, the bags that we brought with us? Do they deliver them to our rooms, or something?" She privately hoped she didn't overlook them where the plane landed.

Katherine smiled back, grateful for Linany's enthusiasm, but frowned a bit at her last question.

"Well...have you been to your duplex yet? Didn't someone from the labs drive you down to the village after you got your injection?" She was surprised that the girl hadn't seen her belongings. "Usually, a staff member takes them from the jeep you drive in on and delivers them to your duplex. Maybe you just didn't see them." Katherine doubted that Linany's stuff had gone missing, but then again, anything was possible on this island.

Linany chuckled softly, "They showed me to my room and all... but I was so excited to see a beach, I just had to run to it. I have never really seen much nature durning my life..." She smiled gently, "And besides, if I had unpacked my videogames or books, I'd be in there for hours, like home." She grinned, and laughed softly, "The point of this... 'vacation', for me, was to see the 'great outdoors.' So far, I wouldn't call it 'great', but... 'enjoyable.'" She smiled again.

Linany thought about this 'vacation', and frowned, "Some vacation, huh? I mean... I'm gonna be here for the rest of my life... plus the fact that I... well.. won't remain human. But hey, at least I might get lucky and be some sort of cute furry animal." She smiled, but she still looked sad.

Kat nodded in agreement with Linany's point of view regarding her stay on the island. Sure, it was still a shock to be there, and yes, it wasn't exactly the most wonderful thought in the world, but they may as well enjoy what they had and hope for the best.

As Linany's expression became sad, she felt a little awkward. She really had never been the comforting type. While something told her a hug might be a good idea, the rather spoiled and dominant part of her mind said that just a pat on the back was enough. Kat settled for rubbing Linany in the back, albeit a little bit awkwardly, and said, "Hey, at least you have a good attitude. I mean...a lot of the people I've met here say that it's not a bad place to live..."

Linany smiled softly as her back was rubbed. "Well..." She stood up slowly, "We should head into town, or something... get to know some people... or something..." She smiled softly. She stood, waiting for Katherine to lead the way.
