I had to stand in for my section leader the other day (the rank end was gone too or else she would have been SL). Not much advice to give since half the band wasn't there (practicing for Memorial Day) and everyone was screwing around. xp
I will probably be SL next year though so this thread might help me then biggrin .

I'm supposed to be sectional leader, and I'm scared. I mean, I'm currently in grade nine! At least there will be no one older than me, just a bunch of guys who want to hurt me... not very pleasent for a girl, eh? X_X

in my opinoin, a good section leader is some one who is a friend, helpful, and kind. raising your voice and getting mad causes those who are new to hate and soon enough will ignore and disobey. i am a sax myself and will be a the new appointed section leader, but ive learned from my past leaders and what they have done. since our section is mostly guys, we have created a sax brotherhood or a saxophone family. it has brought us closer and brought us to being the best section in the band. altho i have to admit that there are those times wen u have to raise you voice. it is ok to do so just as long as u dont do it as much

You're right... our current leader is really nice, even though he DOES call us monkeys... Whenever he DOES call us monkeys, however, it's always when he's saying how well we plaay or something.

I've always felt that good section leaders lead by example. Especially in high school, just being prepared for rehearsals every day does wonders. No one wants to look bad on any level, of course, but there's so much more room for embarassment on the h.s. level.
Basically, all I did was show up every day ready to play, and on days off from rehearsal, I used the time to practice. Not only did I improve my skills with the extra time I put in, but other musicians, and not just those in my section, got the hint that I wanted the band to sound good.
Even though I could play just about every part set down in front of me without much trouble, no one else knew that. What they did see was that I didn't want to make a fool of myself, and I think the attitude rubbed off on everyone.
I didn't need to make big speeches, didn't need to beat any skulls, or any other things like that. If you play it right (no pun intended), you won't need to ever say anything. A raised eyebrow or a nod will deliver the desired message.
Conversely, the more you harp on your section-mates, the worse of a leader you appear to be. Talk too much, and you will be tuned out (again, no pun intended). Just remember that no matter how skilled you are, so long as your section-mates are blowing notes, they can make you sound incredibly bad. If they dislike you enough, they just may decide to do that.

the way things work and my school the oldest (grade wise) person in the section is section leader well this year i'm gonna be a junior and possibly section leader because i ended up with the good horn ( most of our horns look like crap except the new one and the section leader gets that one). well that wouldn't be so bad id there wasn't going to be a senior in the section next year not to mention she is a .. not so nice person... and all her friends hate me and always gang up on me and i'm a small person so thats not nice. what should i do because i know that i'm going to get trouble from her and a lot of other people possibly most of the band... i'm not a very popular person in the band ( its cuz i like the bd and no one else does)

OK we had to interview with our Band Director for the position of Section Leader. Well, my interview consisted of actually about 3 questions. The rest was really him giving me tips on being a Section Leader. Its kinda weird now that I think about it. He asked me a question about my confidence in my talent, one on how I would handle a problem and one that I dont remember, and the rest was him giving me tips on running the section... he basically told me in my interview that I had the job. Anyway, I am Trumpet Section Leader this year and its my first time. Some of the things my director told me were:
arrow Have confidence in your ability, but you don't need to be a domokun about it . arrow With some people, its a power struggle, it's good to empower someone who basically feels powerless. Ask them for comments on the section and how its going. arrow Patience arrow If someone has a problem talk to them about it, one on one, not in front of the section. Try to solve it and if you can't tell that person that they need to take it up with the Band Director. (Now that is specifically with my Band, I dont know about yours). arrow Band becomes top priority when in a leadership position. Job, sports, other activities can't interfere. If you have loads of homework and its lunch time, be in the Band Room doing your homework. Go home and immediately do you homework. *So, make sure that you set and example by always being there, being ready, and still doing well in school.*
Here are some of my own: arrow Get to know your section, sounds corny, but know who they are and their personality. If you apporoach them the way they need to be approached to be effective, it helps when you have to tell them something. arrow Be an authority figure, but don't go domokun on them. arrow Have fun with your section, yeah Band needs to be taken seriously (as far as practicing goes), but its not the army. Joke around, have fun, have a section party or something. arrow I know we hold sectionals where its just practice for the section. If you do too, it would probably be a good idea to know, or at least have some idea of, the different parts in your section like Trumpet 1 , 2, and 3. That way if someone has a question or if they make a mistake its easier to fix.
That's all I've got at the moment. Good luck to the new Section Leaders like me! whee

I do wonder about the wisdom of putting people in charge just because they're seniors (or the oldest). That almost makes being a section leader more of an inheritence issue than a "who is the best for the job" issue.
Especially today, many kids feel "entitled" to things just becase they're a certain age. That's the last kind of personality you want as a section leader.

Oo; Asking questions? That's sounds an awful lot like my audition...minus the commands, salute, and conducting part...
Anyways, I just think the best idea is to use examples and demostrate. How were you taught? Sort of use that as a guide-line. >>; And I swear, is it just me, or is my band the only one that uses the term "squad leader" and not section leader...?

I say scream. Yell your lungs out. My band NEVER listens to me. and yes, i mean the whole band. I play flute but i was the oldest outa everyone and the most mature adn the only person who actually tried to make my section sound good. Yelling is the only thing that worked for them. Even then, though, it was hard.
