Ravenmichiru
Anything by Miazaki? Movies like Grave of Fireflies, Vampire Hunter D, Akira, Ghost in the Shell. . . .

Shows like Sailor Moon (started the HUGE magical girl genre), Voltron, Macross/Robotech, Cowboy Bebop (and if your going that way Lupin the III), Rose of Versailles, Speed Race, Kimba the White lion, Astro Boy (ok, anything by Tezuka), Ninja Scroll (and other Kawajiri films as well). . .

Alright. I'm done for the moment. . . eh heh sweatdrop I could go on forever, but. . . . ah, I won't.

*gasp* Grave of the Fireflies was so sad! Rose of Versailles was AWESOME, another one of those that I watched all the episodes in two or three days! ^_^ I wonder sometimes how many people have seen Rose of Versailles? Who wouldn't love Oscar? I did >.>

Pokemon came out what year? I remember watching it before getting on the bus during my seventh grade year.... I luffed the pokemon. I had almost ever critter from the original 150 memerized (Oh gosh I was a dork) by the time they came out with the next set of pokemon. I think They've come out with even more pokemon, but I really don't know. I still have all the original cards, never have bought any of the new decks... well, actually, haven't bought a deck in the past.... five-six years? Whew... I feel kinda old or something now.

I've seen some very good answers here but for things not mentioned I'd say, For films:

Ghost in the shell:
Lovely animation, some of the highest quality cel based animation ever! it's on par with Disney and Miyazaki films! As for plot line it takes the question of something as simple as what it is to be alive and makes it into high art.

Perfect Blue: Often described as hitchcock meets Disney. (though I feel there's no Disney in it other than in animation quality.) Wonderfully animated and an absolutely awesome dramatic storyline with a twist. The best way to describe it in some way is a realism anime with a mindf@*!k.

The dog of Flanders:
(there's also a series but I'm only talking about the film) based on a children's it's touching (read horribly depressing) and beautiful tail about a young Danish boy, his granfather, and his dog. I can't really say much more of the plot without spoiling it but, I think it's something everyone should watch though it will leave you in tears by the end.

Night on the Galatic railroad: Like dog of flanders, it's based on a Children's book. It's a very profound and beautiful tale that deals with life, sickness, death and friendship/ Just think about it makes me want to cry it's a very powerful film.

For series:

Record The Lodoss Wars OVA: A beautiful Beautiful epic tale of fantasy with some of the most detailed art I've ever seen in any anime. And for any LOTOR fans some scenes from the trilogy series appear to have borrowed heavily from the Lodoss ova.

Anything by Matsumoto (most notably Galaxy Express 999): Matsumoto's space odesseys are absolute classics and there's a good reason they have cult followings in the US and Japan. (His spaceship Yamato or Starblazers was shown on tv in the US in the 70's) The stories of space pirates and alien worlds are surprisingly universal. The tenderness and humanity with which their stories are told make his characters very very accessable and loveable. And, his distintive animation style is just lovely.

The original Dragonball series:
Not DBZ but, Dragonball. It's what really made Akira Toriyama's Career take off. It's nothing truly dramatic but it's funny as can be and marked the start of popular shows in the fighting genere (see: Naruto, hunter X hunter, yu gi oh, shaman king, ect.) Although I've never been quite too sure how exactly it's progress into DBZ and later GT)

There are some others but, I think I should stop there....

they created way too many pokemon way too fast.

Yes'm.

Hah, remember those cool little raps they'd have that named all the Pokemon? Yeah, I used to have those memorized.

And I totally pwn'd those "Who's that Pokemon!?" things on comerical breaks.

That show was really one of the best. I still remember the episode with the two caterpillar looking things that turn into steel...hah, man I miss those days.

I loved Digimon. Me and my friends used to play games at recess when we were Digimon. And then in sixth grade they were like "okay, this is gay" and I was all heartbroken.
X3 I still act like a kid half the time, actually, and I lack enough dignity to wear cat ears around town.

Oh, and Cardcaptors too. Same thing there, only I still play that with one friend sometimes.
Damn, I feel some immature. xP
