We just got a Hillel up and running on my campus (I'm the treasurer) and we had our first shabbos last Friday. It was great except for the part where this stupid chick called some random friends over to smoke weed (this was after the ceremony, but still -- we're a school sponsored organization and that was not cool). I hope nobody takes this the wrong way but I hate it when Jews are so flippant about things like this and don't take the religion serious enough. Just saying.

I feel you on not smoking weed at school sponsored events, that's just ridiculous, but I've smoked weed with my old rabbi in the past and a lot of my most religious friends are stoners - I'm not sure if you're implying that means they don't take their religion seriously enough as well.. sweatdrop

I meant it was a school organizational function, not to mention a religious function and should be treated as such. I've smoked on occasion but a) I believe in doing it moderately and b) there is an appropriate time and place for everything. Also, it was shabbos, even if an informal one, so I felt it was inappropriate. I wouldn't carry a bong into a synagogue or any house of worship. Not to mention that this Hillel is very young and there isn't a huge Jewish presence on campus or even in the town where my college is located (they don't even have a synagogue there). So it's kind of important to me that it keeps its funding and that we're all cool with the school.

Okay, cool, that makes perfect sense to me. smile And carrying a bong to shul and smoking it on Shabbos is all kinds of wrong anyway. 3nodding I can understand not wanting to lose your funding over some girl being a moron about her recreational activities. Nathan: Lubavitchers. xd I love them. If it were legal I'd open up a kosher pot bakery in Crown Heights or something. Some of my Breslov friends are huge stoners too, and the Carlebach enthusiasts.. Great people. Frum weirdos rule. biggrin

A rabbi who smokes weed freaks me out sweatdrop Majorly agreed. sweatdrop Isn't there something about that in the Torah? Somewhere? sweatdrop Well, it's a plant created by Hashem, the same as the tobacco plant, and I can see many religious Jews who smoke cigarettes (some in excess).. I don't think cannabis specifically is mentioned in the Torah, though. It does grow in Israel and other parts of the middle east so I'm sure they _had_ it, but opium was probably more widely used in Biblical times as a recreational substance. Wikipedia's Spiritual Use of Cannabis Article Rabbinical scholars appear to be divided on the question of what kaneh-bosm means. Exodus[10] lists kinamon-bosm (qnmn-bsm) and kaneh-bosm (qnh-bsm) separately as ingredients of the holy anointing oil used by temple priests, romanized as "v'th qx-lk bsmym r's mr-drvr xms m'vt vqnmn-bsm mx&ytv xmsym vm'tym vqnh-bsm xmsym vm'tym".[11] Rabbi Diana Villa confirms that "'Kinamon' or 'kinman bosem' is definitely cinnamon" but disputes that kaneh-bosm is cannabis, offering a number of other possible interpretations from other published sources.[12] Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan's annotated Torah translation entitled "The Living Torah" includes cannabis among several other possible interpretations of kaneh-bosm [13]. That's the only possible direct reference to it in the Torah I could find in a quick search.. I can't imagine too many people study that topic. xd

darkphoenix1247 sweatdrop Isn't that harmful to your cerebral cortex? There was an article in Science News about that.... sweatdrop uhh, no. Tobacco and alcohol are much worse, and the long term effects are much much worse. Though I do believe that on an individual basis cannabis has more disease causing debris in it, you don't smoke as much of it generally as you do cigarettes, and it's not physcially addicting, like tobacco is. Not to mention it's been proven to help cancer patients. Not that I'm saying everyone should run out and buy pot. roothands I've smoked on occasion but a) I believe in doing it moderately and b) there is an appropriate time and place for everything. 3nodding
