Cameo Appearances
Edge of the World-Sister Maria [Estrelas' Aunt's cameo] was the only person in the convent that cared for younger Ray in the flashback scenes. She was the one that taught him to cook and bake and remained friendly to him even as he grew older. In one flashback scenes she tells Ray, "You know, I have two nieces, the most adorable little angels you're ever see! Estrelas is the older one; Estica is the younger." She then shows him an old faded photo, showing Estrelas and Estica as children. When Samuel asks him where he learned to cook, Ray tells him a "nice Portuguese lady." -Images of Estrelas occasionally appear across the story, mostly in old photos or records from "Old Times." -When Pearl is told to wait for Cheng Yu to arrive, she is taken to Cheng Yu's personal art gallery. She examines the display of the "Remnents of the Venus di Milo" [broken by Angel in 'Estrelas and the Venus di Milo'] and then looks around. She sees a portrait of Estrelas and remarks, "Hmph! Portuguese by the looks of it." Later, Cheng Yu remarks of the painting, "Such a woman, such a woman she was. There's no one like her and no one ever again." Pearl asks if Cheng Yu had known the woman in the portrait, and Cheng Yu responds, "In theory at least." -A large white rabbit that only listens to commands in French consistently attacks Ray and Samuel every time they walk to town. -Maiko occasionally quotes lines from "Estrelas" [The winning poem]. -When Samuel Morris gets drunk sometimes he starts doing random Morris folkdances, most notably Portuguese ones where he yells, "Stars, --censored-- Stars!" -And after those episodes Pearl often yells, "What, are you going to take up sewing and insanity next?" It can be inferred that this is a reference to Estrelas' interesting habits. Hub, Hub, Hub!-Sister Maria [Estrelas' aunt] is one of the main characters. Outside the monastary, she seems to have developed her own branch of Catholicism, one that abides by the rules "Be Happy, Do No Harm, Drink A Lot Of Things, and Serve Him by doing the above." -Estrelas consistantly appears in Maria's photographs of her 'two DAH-LIN' niec-ies.' -Pasties di Nato play an important role throughout the plot -When the orchestra is hired for a reindition of Les Miserables, the Eponine has vanished and Choi remarks that it was probably a robot that snapped its wires and ran away to join the mad circus. -When Erich is forcibly drafted to play the role of Eponine after the stand-in drank Sister Maria's "tonic," the manager [who bears a close resemblence to Eponine's theatre manager] screams that there's not enough sobbing and crying, a reference to Eponine's habit of weeping all day and night. Old House Speakeasy-In the beginning, Estreals appears to Charlotte [main character, a flamboyant flapper] and sings, "So that's what you want to do! Really, that's your life cut out for you. Me, I'm looking for something else, where I can all but be myself." -Estrelas actually appears in the song "Mad, Mad, Women," which is a feminist showtune about women wanting to lead their own life. There is a verse dedicated to her, which I'm currently revising. -Estrelas is the first to stumble over Charlotte's corpse and alerts the police.

September 04, 2006, 'Sometime to be Lonely' It's lonely.... I'm not sure if I can keep this up. It's been less than a year since I've set off from home, from my family...... And already I'm breaking apart. It's not natural for me to be so cut off from others. It's so fustrating, the few times I've tried in the past have been met with exploition and sadness. More sadness. People must like sorrow much, for everyone goes through much of it. Even with Angel, I'm still drowning in it. It's like an ocean- no land anywhere. I'll swim and hold out until I'm tired, and I'll finally collapse. There'll be no one to pick me up. Even travelling through all those cities and crowded places, I've always been distant. It's like viewing something through a window. I can see festivals. I see young couples, I see children. They're all happy, they're together. But what I see it actually viewed through a telescope, and they're thousands of miles away. I can only watch- it doesn't give me pleasure, rather, it reminds me of what I can't do, can't have, can't be. I'm grabbing onto Angel now, my life preserver. Maybe if I paddle far enough, I'll find land.

Entry, September 05, 2006, Dream of Eden A garden would be nice, really. I'd love for there to be something that's decently GROWING in this Godforsaken mountain..... There aren't very many plants that can grow here, in snow and everything. But somehow, if I'm correct, LOTUS headquarters seem even a bit more... Habitable than outside in the actual mountains. I have a few plants that I know will grow in these conditions. Radishes, potatoes, carrots.... Root plants. Oh yes, and some Blue Lupine for a splash of color. And flowering kale! You know, sometimes a garden is the only way to connect to home without actually being home..... And the vegetables here aren't sun-norished and rain-watered like the ones Angel and I are used to. It'll be nice to have a little plot of land... Maybe some others will help me with it. Angel loves carrots. She loves nibbling and frolicking in the tops when they're grown. And maybe I'll be allowed in the kitchen, so I can cook some food! ...It'll be nice to have a taste of the sunshine and warmth again....

Angel's Origins I remember that day very well. It was Agosto the sixteenth when we met with the first ((AND ONLY!)) traces of time fracturing. (As you know, the area where we lived in Southern Portugal was so insignificant that nothing ever happened there. No Rome, no nothing.)) So we recieved news of strange occurances many times- about time splitting. Most of us didn't believe it, but I did. Maybe just a chance to even PRETEND to have some excitement and drama. But when the effects of the Time Split showed, it wasn't a team of killer... What are they called? Andries? Undroids? Robots. No killer robots. We got a shipment of Fine French rabbits. They came in travelling cages and the such, mostly made of a strange shiny material I now learn is called "plástico." The logo was of a rabbit with banner underneath, reading "Mouseir Enjolras' Fine Breeds." Whoever Mouseir Enjolras was, I'm sure he suffered some pretty heavy losses, considering the huge army of creamy-furred, pink-eyed, fluffy-soft coated rabbits that appeared literally out of time. Anyways, at night, the local drunkard Swiney let them all out to see them... Do... The horizontal rumba. However, he never got to see whether or not they really did it, because the moment the cages opened, the rabbits sprinted clear off. Now, we don't have anything larger than a fox that eats meat. And those rabbits were HUGE HUGE HUUUUUUUUUUUGE! Well, compared to most rabbits I've seen. Okay, so they stood out, easy targets for predators. They had beautiful light-creme-colored fur and large light-red eyes. And they had basically no survival skills aside from eating, eating, digging burrows, and eating, and more eating, and making more babies. But that didn't matter, we were all to scared stiff to even touch the rabbits, much less kill one. And the local priest Father Ferdinando forbade us to even touch them. They were white, and he thought they were angels. We thought he was insane. How could an angel have four legs? Anyways, that year, we had LOTS of white baby bunnies hopping EVERYWHERE. I managed to snitch one and named her Angel.

September 20, 2006: Reflecting on the Nature of Piracy on the High Seas It's not that I don't remember the pirates. They were the only people I've ever met that stopped me from doing something because they were genuinely afraid I might scratch my dainty little face. Angel was treated like an actual angel. They believed that Angel's large eyes and creamy white fur signified some sort of diety. I had to stop them from feeding her wine from gold-and-ivory goblets practically. They worshipped me like some sort of radiant sun, as if they were flowers that would wither if I stopped shining, or at least stopped cooking delicious food for them. I recall that the entire crew would reverently press their hands to their bosoms every time I walked past on deck. I was treated better than I ever had been aboard that ship. I was basically some sort of emperess- even when I said not to, there were at least two pirates demanding what they could do for me. After a good haul of silks and jewelry, the whole crew would line up as the captain bestowed riches and fine things on me, and they would all sigh and say, "Isn't she magnificant?" when I came out of the dressing room. Why did I leave that charmed life? Perhaps that's something even I did not know.
