"Is eggbaby," the Nightmare insisted, looking down at the perfect sphere of smooth, glossy green stone. "Is eggbaby, and will -hatch-, and will be Pennyroyal's."
"We've been over this, Pennyroyal, precious," Kit insisted, sighing as she brandished her wooden spoon at the birdlike creature, who looked mortally offended at his dreamer's perseverence. "It's not an egg, and it won't turn into your baby. It's a -stone-."
"Lies, lies," squawked Pennyroyal, and with a little clicking noise of disapproval, he flicked his wings open, and fluttered directly over the wooden spoon, firmly settling his feathery bottom on the cold, bright little peridot stone, fluffing up like a mother hen. "Dreamer lies. We will see if eggbaby hatches. Dreamer should go and... do what dreamer does."
Kit sighed, looked down at the obstinate Nightmare, then at her wooden spoon -- and then, poking the birdlike creature in the center of its forehead right between its scarlet droplet-eyes, muttered, "You are INCORRIGIBLE."
"I am not," parroted the Nightmare primly. "I am PENNYROYAL."
And that was that.

"So," warbled Pennyroyal, one evening as he watched the Jumi girl playing with a small doll that Kit had bought her for Christmas, "is not eggbaby." The birdlike Nightmare sounded decidedly put out, ruffling his bright wings. Kit got the distinct impression that this realization annoyed the birdy little brat.
"No, she isn't," Kit said with a sigh, peering at Pennyroyal over her glasses and her book, as the bird sat on her knee, his wicked metallic talons clinging to the fabric of her pajama pants. "And you're going to have to get used to that."
"Will not," said Peri, and stuck his bright blue head out, his birdy face quite close to his dreamer's. "Eggbaby is still there -- " One ember-flecked wing stretched out to point out the core lodged in the small girl's chest. "Is strange, strange childthing. Not like others."
"I'm not strange," pointed out the girl, looking up with her wide violet eyes, her head tilting a bit and her little mouth smiling. "I'm just like I should be. You're the one that's strange."
A bit taken aback, Pennyroyal fluffed his feathers, turning to stare down at the little girl, sticking out his neck again to eye her with ruby-bright eyes in his blue body-feathers. "Pennyroyal is Pennyroyal is Pennyroyal. Not strange. Not girlthing with eggbaby in chest!" He harrumphed, pointing again with a wingtip.
Peri blinked a bit, lifting a hand to lightly brush against the smooth green stone above the top of her dress, puzzled. "This isn't an egg..."
"Is so, is so, is so!" Pennyroyal squawked, all but hopping up and down, much to his dreamer's dismay, as Kit yelped.
"Claws! CLAWS, Pennyroyal!" She shoved the Nightmare off her knee, and with a screech, Pennyroyal went tumbling down -- and after flipping several times, ended up in the small girl's dress-clad lap, blinking up at Peri.
"Silly bird," burbled Peri, laughing as she patted the feathery head, then righted him gently. "If Pennyroyal is Pennyroyal is Pennyroyal, then Peri is Peri is Peri. So there." She wrapped her little arms around the large bird gently, careful not to ruffle the feathers too much.
Pennyroyal could only harrumph at that, and pretend he wasn't gleeful at the attention.
