Hithromiel I had one my freshman year where I was going backwards in one set (thankfully not playing) with steps way too big for my short legs. That sucked. I know what you mean by the short leg thing. You have my sympathy as a marcher under 5 feet tall.

"you aren't getting to the 25yd line in 12 counts!!!" i remember getting to only the 35 yard line from the other 35 yard line neutral

Blckpanthr13 [[ Helios ]] Heh, that's nothin'! Every year we do a dance during a drum solo in the last tune of our show, and this year it ends with everyone doing jazz splits. In uniform. That's three layers of polyester. I'll admit, it looks amazing, but it was a b***h to learn. I have never seen jazz splits done correctly before, but I think that is kind of what we have to do when running backfield.
But last year during the drum break which is a 22 count accelerando, the flutes and clarinets had to jazz run backwards from the front sideline to 6 steps infront of the backsideline.....In 16 counts...while accelerating!
We had to get a lot of our drill re-written last year...but they never got to that set. eek How do you do jazz splits while running? You have your front leg stretched out in front of you (like a normal split) but the only difference is the back leg is bent and kind of to the side instead of straight back. Its cool because from the stands it looks like we're doing actual splits even though we're not.

Our visual tech has a fancy name for it and I can't remember it. I thought you meant like while jazz running, extending the back leg straight and kicking the front leg forward by propelling yourself with the back leg so that when you step, both legs come up almost horizontal and on the cross count do a scissor like motion, since the legs have to be straight.
It looks like doing the splits while running or like someone leaping like a gazelle....our guard does it a lot, but we're not trained to do it like them so we look stupid when we try. blaugh

X_X In my show, I have 12 counts to get from the 30 yrd line to the 5 yard line while doing a slide. And of course, I have the furthest to go out of everyone in that set....and of course I am the shortest person in the band.

Aw, come now, jazz running isn't that hard. You know what's hard, a switch leap. (It's like a split leap--doing the splits while in the air--you just brush your, say, right leg in front of you when you first jump and them swing it back really fast.) Hurts my hip everytime...
Jazz splits=pain in my neck! Well, my knee really. This past winter season we had to do them in the show and I always came down to fast and landed sort of on my knee. Well, that's what we get when we have to hold a big a** pole above our heads while doing it...
Oh! Before I forget: What is River running? Is it liek jazz running? Or fluttering?

When I was in guard my freshman year, we had to use 6 foot yellow PVC pipes, along with backdrops. I hated those things with a passion for many reasons...

River running is basically jazz running but out of time. But switch leaps sound like what we are expected to learn while running backfield. We're supposed to river run until we can master the technique of what I guess you call switch leaps.

I know people that have been doing dance for a long time that can barely do a switch leap, and we're talking like ballet classes everyday! I'll see if I can't find a picture or something of it to show you. So many terms! it's hard to keep them all straight! lol

Last year the woodwinds put down their instruments and picked up brass, and that was cool, but doubles? I love doubles, they're fun...but definitely not in our marching uniforms... eek

It's tough enough marching in those thick wool uniforms....I think it would be fun to pick up a brass though.
