It was all Linnea could to to nod stiffly, which for her was a lot. If she was called upon to give opinions she wasn't sure what she would do. Then again, it didn't seem like the two girls would need any outside influences. They seemed fine on their own. Instead of worrying about the future, she quickened her pace in order to keep up.

"If they're falling apart, what's the point?" Ren asked quizzically. Some fashion stuff didn't make sense. But the rest of it sounded cool, and definitely something she wanted to know more about. "Like a bird? Really? That sounds like fun! Maybe she was dressing up for that Hally Ween later. Linnea's doing a costume too! It's gonna look really cool!"

Nodding again, Linnea blushed a little. She wasn't nearly as confident about the quality of her costume, but Halloween was still some time away, so she could improve it.

"Hally Ween? What's that?" Evie twisted, neatly spinning in her cup to look up at Jack. "Daddy? What's Hally Ween? Can we do it? I could be a bird woman, too, right?" Her smile spread so wide that it created dimples in her plump cheeks. "Please? Please?"

Jack laughed. "Sure, pet. If you insist. We'll do Hally Ween." He carefully mimicked her pronunciation. Then he smiled at Linnea. "What's your costume, Miss Linnea? And are you dressing up, too, Ren?"

"Oh yes!" She had worked on her costume carefully, and it went along so nicely with Linnea's neat costume. "I'm gonna be a flower! And Linnea's costume is sooooo pretty! She's-"

"A secret," Linnea blurted out hurriedly. She hadn't meant to sound rude, which she probably did, but she didn't want Ren telling other people about her costume yet. It wasn't finished, and either way she felt a little silly about it. No matter what she was wearing, Linnea felt out of place, and Halloween didn't change that.

Ran looked up, puzzled, and shrugged. She could hop on that bandwagon. "Yeah, it's a secret! A super-duper special secret!"

"Oooohhhh." Evie nodded solemnly. "I understand. It's a secret. Daddy has secrets, too. Like the room at the end of the hallway and the..."

A finger tapped the top of her head gently and she looked up innocently. Jack grinned down at her. "Secrets are secrets 'cause people don't know, luv," he chided gently. "Would you like it if I told Brunswick 'bout your secret stash of choccies?"

Eyes gone wide, Evie shook her head. "Oh, -no-. I wouldn't want that at all." She turned back to Ren and Linnea. "I didn't just tell you about the room, okay?"

"What room?" Linnea asked softly, a tiny smile appearing. These people didn't seem bad. In fact, they reminded her a bit of her own family, and she would do almost anything for them when they were home. At the same time, if they didn't want her to know about this room, whatever it was, she would play along. Maybe they weren't nice, and she wanted to cooperate.

Puzzled, Ren tapped Linnea's fingers. "What do you mean 'what room?' Evie just said there was a room! Weren't you listening? And... but you just said there was a room!"

At this rate, Ren would ruin everything! Horrified, Linnea put her free hand to her mouth in a shushing motion. Couldn't the girl just pretend?

But Ren didn't even notice. She was already diverted, and went on talking. "Oooh, you have secret chocolate? That sounds like fun! But how come it's a secret?"

"It's a secret because people don't know about it." Evie beamed. Jack merely watched and, sure enough, her smile melted away three seconds later as things clicked into place. "Except you know about it now," she whispered in dawning horror. Twisting in her glass, she blinked up at Jack. "Daddy? Can it be a secret yet if it's just Brunswick who doesn't know?"

"Sure, lil bit. 'Course it can." Jack paused by an aisle and stepped out of the way. With a vague gesture, he motioned Linnea and Ren ahead of him. The aisle was Pink Ahoy, a sea of dolls and clothing and furniture and dream houses. "We'll just be sure not t' tell him, hm?"

"Oh, then I won't tell! Pinky swear!" And to prove it, Ren held out her pinky, looking gravely serious. After all, pinky swears were serious things.

Always accomodating, Linnea moved Ren's glass closer to the others. She was smiling again, but her eyes were more on the vibrant toys and accessories that began to surround them than the pair of tiny girls. This aisle certainly looked like it would have what Ren wanted, but it was hard to be sure.

"Definitely! Pinky swear!" Jack tried not to laught again as he obediently moved Evie's cup closer to Ren's. She held out her pinky in a neat mirror of the other girl, waiting to see what came next. "This means it's forever and ever, right?"

"That's right, lil bit." Jack watched as the two girls entwined pinkies solemnly. "'Bout as serious as you can get."

Now that they had that out of the way, Ren could focus on other things, like the color the aisle had turned. "Ooooh!" she squealed, turning her head this way and that, and sending her bob of silvery hair flying outwards from the force of her movements. "Look at all the pretty things!"

Linnea was inclined to agree. Even though pink wasn't one of her favorite colors, all of the sparkles and spangles that accompanied the shade did have a sort of appeal. They would almost certainly find something suitable in such a place. But first things first. It took a few moments of working her mouth to get the words out, but Linnea finally managed a whole sentence. "What are you looking for?"

Evie blinked for a moment, turning slowly to look up at Linnea. Her nose wrinkled. Then, suddenly, she giggled and beamed, dimples showing as she found her train of thought once more. "Clothing! Brunswick said I should wear clothing."

"Don't look at me," Jack murmured, shrugging. "I think it's daft, too."

"And so I asked Daddy," she continued as if he hadn't spoken, "and -he- said we might find something small enough in a toy store so here we are." The little girl spun slowly in her cup so she could better look around to see what was on the shelves. She pointed. "I think I see clothing down there. I don't need a doll with the clothing."

The idea of clothes was a good one, at least in Linnea's opinion. More than once she had felt embarrased by Ren's free nature. But her light protests had been unnoticed.

And again, Ren wrinkled her nose. Again with the whole clothing fuss. It didn't make much sense to her. "Why? I think you look pretty the way you are. Maka too, and she doesn't wear any clothing."

"Nimue," Linnea offered by way of an explanation. Maka, the Nim that lived with them, liked Linnea's quiet company and often stayed in her room. She and Ren had hit it off, in a manner, and like Ren, she wore no clothing. It made Linnea feel like the odd one out.

Jack arched one eyebrow, the name clearly not striking him as any kind of breed or race but, instead, as something far more heavy. He simply shook his head, though, and started to walk in the direction Evie had demanded. "I tried tellin' her that clothing will just get wet, seein' as how she's in a cup and all," he offered to Linnea by way of conversation, "but she won't listen. I don't know if your Ren's the same way but Evie gets set on a notion and away she goes."

Evie rolled her eyes in a manner obviously picked up from Brunswick. "Clothing is pretty, Daddy," she explained patiently. "And Trinity wears clothing. So does almost everyone else." She paused and her nature caused her to add, truthfully, "I probably won't want to wear it -all- the time. It depends. I might not like how it feels." She pointed to a particularly bright-patterned dress off to the right. "Ooo, Ren! Look how pretty!"

Whether or not Ren was set on a notion or not wasn't something Linnea was sure about, so she shrugged lightly, focusing instead on the clothes. Some of them were actually pretty, and she thought it best to be prepared if Ren changed her mind and wanted something after all.

Ren shrugged. If Evie wanted to wear clothes, she could wear clothes. The dress she was pointing at did look pretty, in a way. "I like it," she agreed, "but I like that one better!" The dress she was pointing to was patterned in softer pastels, with a subtler pattern but a great many more frills and ruffles. "It's got pretty stuff on it!"

((Sorry for the delay! I was away for the weekend, conning it up.))

"Are those flowers, Daddy?"

"Hmm?" Obediently, Jack picked up both the bright and the pastel dresses for the girls to inspect. "I think the one Ren pointed out is orchids or somethin' like. Yours are... Dunno. Don't think they're any kind o' real flowers at all."

Evie's eyes went big and she turned to share the look with Ren. "So they're make-believe," she whispered. "Do you think those are the best kind?"

Ren's eyes widened at the description. She knew what orchids were! At least, a little. Linnea had shown her pictures before, so it was no wonder she'd chosen that dress. Evie's daddy had to be really smart to figure all of that out, and to know that the other flowers were only pretend.

And then there was Evie's question. Considering it, Ren wrinkled her nose and looked up at both dresses. "I don't know. I think that 'maginary flowers are pretty, but then you can't grow them in a garden. Or in your window. Linnea has some flowers in our window, and they smell really pretty!"

Linnea blushed, staring at her feet again. She just had a potted gardenia and some jasmine in a windowbox, hardly what she would call a garden. But they were pretty, she supposed. It was nice to know that Ren liked them as well.
