I tap my heel sometimes... no real pattern to when I do it, I just sort of start and stop as I please. I'm weird. I try not to do it at concerts, though, and I know I should probably start using my toes rather than my heel. I don't see why your teacher would tell you to stop, though. Wouldn't he rather you be on the beat than look nice?

i guess thats true,
but for example, i never thought of tapping my feet to keep time until i got into band (i play piano).
yu could keep time in yur head cant yu?
plus, tapping your foot adds to unneeded noise plus music. it's like counting out loud, your voice adds to the noise and degrades the overall sound of the music.
i guess thats why, but i love tapping my toes anyways.

Tapping your foot is perfectly fine, and it does help keep tempo. our band director encourages it. just don't to it loudly if you are on stage sweatdrop

I never really tapped my foot before this year... but out of the blue this year, I realized one day... "Hey, I'm tapping my foot.. when did this happen?"
Oh... and I also tap with the heel of my left foot, everyone finds this weird. I sit next to the first clarinet (I play oboe) and every day she gives my a funny look. XD

Our BD was yelling at us today to tap our feet. She encourages it. I don't always remember - sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I've been taught since I started band (5th grade) to tap my foot, and so I can't imagine being told NOT to.

I don't usually tap my foot. I don't know why, I just never did. I mean, one can understand not doing it while playing guitar, but I also play flute, and I just...yeah...never did.
My intermediate school BD always used to harp on people for tapping their feet too loud on stage (honestly, it sounded like a unison stampede), but he was fine with it in the band room.

I tap my foot 90% of the time. The other 10% I either don't have to or it's too damn fast to tap each beat.
My BD doesn't really mind us tapping loud in rehersal 'cause we have a concrete floor so you can't really hear it.

Hn....in band,I just count in my head most of the time. In choir though, I beat with my hand the tempo,since our choirdirector usually doesn't conduct rehersals and we can get lost. ';;

We need to tap our foot to stay in time, which I'm horrible at. xd The metronome is my worst enemy.

That's really mean that your BD says its for babies. My director tells us to all the time. Professional groups tap their feet. Some people can keep the beat inside, but some people can't. There's no way tapping is babyish.

my band director goes nuts getting people to tap their feet. He taps his feet, thers nothing wrong with it. I bet you all of the best musicians tap their feet. Don't listen to him when he calls you a baby because he is wrong. ninja

I always tap my foot, even when we aren't in band. The songs get stuck in my head... sweatdrop
If tapping your foot is the only way for you to keep tempo, then the heck with what your BD told you. 'Twould be better for you to keep tempo and tap your foot than be off beat.
