sybex Shark Deformography sybex Shark They finally aired it?! 4laugh I always wondered why it wasn't aired when othere things were, like, say, Liberty's pregnancy. Didn't seem right. If only we still had digital cable...
I like Manny. She's "slutty", but at least she isn't afraid of making mistakes. Yeah! I was so shocked! I'm like "OMG THIS IS IT!!!!" And they probably had no problem with Liberty's pregnancy because of A. she's doing the "right thing" and 2. Liberty and JT are a bit older than Manny was. I don't like the direction her character's been taking. She cries too much, and has steadily been reminding me more and more of a human wound (messy friendship...). They're older? Geez, shows how much I pay attention.
Really? Haven't been following the show recently, so I couldn't tell.
And everyone else: yes, it's an emo/angst fest, but it's such fun to watch. Besides, it's about teenagers, so the angst-factor is actually pretty accurate. You got that right. *angst-angst-angst*

Quote: I liked that Liberty's baby was taken away. It showed all those brainwashed, pro-life kids that adoption isn't that ******** easy. --- I was under the impression that she put it up for adoption to begin with. It wasn't really realistic, considering such a baby (half-black/half-white) would have very little chance of being adopted so quickly. Quote: I'm suprised the plot with Paige being raped only lasted a precious few episodes. It was a big topic, and it should've been in there a few more times. I mean, Ellie's cutting lasted like 12 episodes. The fact Paige was raped is touched on often, actually. It's very subtle. For example, her personality changes.

I still like how they dealt with abortion in the old show much more. Well, I feel that way about most of the topics. The character was one of two twins, from a very pro-life Christian family. She gets the abortion and her sister doesn't support it, but helps her through it. At the clinic, she is harassed by pro-lifers waving signs and baby dolls in her face urging her "not to kill the little baby" (cut from US version, of course). Then, after the abortion, she starts getting harassed by someone else, who puts pictures of stillborns and red paint on her locker with phrases like "Stop killing the unborn!" and "Murderer!". She finds out who it is, and a huge fight erupts.
Plus, they had one of the best abortion quotes ever in one of the episodes, courtesy of the show's teenage mother... "It's nice to have, you know, high ideals and stuff, but when you're in that situation? 'Right' and 'wrong'... They can get really complicated!"

Of course editted. Hell, they edit the word "damn" out of Daria.
And Godforbid that teenagers see how brutal and evil abortion clinic protesters are.

It wasn't really realistic, considering such a baby (half-black/half-white) would have very little chance of being adopted so quickly. Well, Liberty is kinda light to begin with... Originally, Liberty and JT were going to keep the baby... But they got so hard up for money that JT started stealing drugs from the pharmacy that he worked at and selling them. So, they decided to put it up for adoption. I heard a rumour that JT was supposed to crash his car, killing Liberty and the fetus. But I do think that they could have spent more time on it. It also gives a big "******** you!" to the idiots who think that if a girl cries rape, the guy she accuses is like... put away for 5 million years without a trial.

I'm amazed that any episode of the old/new show concerning abortion makes it past American censors. Look at how our culture, as a whole, feels about abortion. It's like "well, you know you could..." "*ghasp!* NO! I could never do that! It's a BABY!" In school, the only time I've seen abortion even MENTIONED is to say that it's pretty much the worst and most evil option there is, and damn you for having premarital sex in the first place because now it's going to DESTROY YOUR LIFE!!!! Seriously, you guys should see the health and child development books that we're taught. Nothing about the GLBTQ community, either. ********...

One health development book for parents in my school library(it's at least 30 years out of date though, there's newer ones) says "If your child appears to show homosexual tendencies, speak with a pastor immediately." I've heard of other US ones that say "Premarital sex has risks of STDs and unwanted pregnancy," as if marriage magically makes that all vanish.

Oh man, that should be kept at least to warn people about how things used to be. Mine says the same thing about premarital sex. It also says that you won't have any friends, your parents will hate you, and if you get married because you got knocked up you WILL get divorced. I should go find it, it's still in my room somewhere... I hate that book SO BAD.

I've only heard about that, I haven't actually seen it because it's not the book that the upperclassmen use... But ours says NOTHING about b/c (well, not in the book but there's a supplementary video about it), and pretty much has a big shame/scarefest about premarital sex. The STD section? "HAVE SEX AND YOU WILL GET AIDS/HPV/HIV/THE CLAP/DUTCH ELM DISEASE!!"

I think I'm the only one in this guild who has never seen a Individual & Family Life book. Then again, maybe Tennessee works like that. "KEEP THE CHILDREN IGNORANT AND THEN THEY WON'T HAVE SEX!" is something I think they're getting at. Personally, I don't think it's working all that well. (I know of two people from my middle school who have had sex already. No telling how many have done it in the high school.)

In one of our classes we were all actually assigned an STD and we had to find out all the symptoms, what it did, etc. Lord Setar One health development book for parents in my school library(it's at least 30 years out of date though, there's newer ones) says "If your child appears to show homosexual tendencies, speak with a pastor immediately." I've heard of other US ones that say "Premarital sex has risks of STDs and unwanted pregnancy," as if marriage magically makes that all vanish. That's one of the biggest things the textbooks miss. The important thing isn't some magical ring and a ceremony, but protection, trust, communication, etc. Oxymoronic Username I think I'm the only one in this guild who has never seen a Individual & Family Life book. (I know of two people from my middle school who have had sex already. No telling how many have done it in the high school.) Individual & Family life is mostly about development of the individual (as in early life, personality, friendships, etc) and then, as the name implies, the family. There was this huge spiel on "courtship" and marriage. Really sexist and heterosexist, of course. But most IFL textboks have some scare tactics concerning sex.

That last part reminds of the gym teacher in Mean Girls, who teaches the students, "if you have sex, you'll get Chlamydia (sp?)...AND DIE!!!!" Thankfully, I have no horror stories to share about my health class back in high school. Everything was presented factually and all topics were covered, including homosexuality, STDs, and premarital sex. We were taught how to put on a condom, how to identify the symptoms of an std, facts about abortions, etc. I still remember the very first day of health class. As soon as everyone was seated, the teacher wrote on the board the words, "v****a", "breasts", "p***s", "masturbation" and "sex". We were then told to get up and write as many slang words as we could think of for each word. Everyone looked perplexed; we couldn't believe we were actually being told to do something that would normally get us in trouble. So finally, yours truly, took the initiative and wrote "tits". Everyone followed suit, till the entire board was covered in pussies, dicks, headlights, knockers, choking the chicken, knocking boots, one-eyed willy, and various other naughty words. This part of the lesson was used to demystify sexuality and make it seem real, I suppose. I however, will forever remember it as the BEST CLASS EVER. blaugh
