Hana-Kimi, known in Japan as Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (花ざかりの君たちへ For You in Full Blossoms) is a shōjo manga series written by Hisaya Nakajo. (The official US translation, by VIZ Media, ends the title with a "he" instead of "e".)

The manga is serialized in Japan in Hakusensha's Hana to Yume (Flowers and Dreams), which comes out bi-weekly (5th and 20th of every month). This manga series has ended at volume 23 in August 2004 in Japan, but is only up to volume 14 as of October 2006 in the US. An artbook was released in May 2005 in addition to a character book.

Hana-Kimi is published in English under the name Hana-Kimi by VIZ Media. The English title originated from a fan abbreviation of the original Japanese title.

Hana-Kimi centers on Mizuki Ashiya, a Japanese girl who lives in the United States. One day, she sees a track and field competition on TV, and becomes attracted to one of the competitors, Izumi Sano, competing in the high jump. She begins to idolize the young athlete and eventually transfers to Japan to attend the same school that Sano attends. There is a catch, however-- Sano attends an all-boys high school, named Osaka Gakuen, and Mizuki must disguise herself as a boy to enter.

A new Taiwanese Drama based off HanaKimi is currently airing, titled 'Hanasama Shounen Shoujo' or 'Hua Yang Shao Nian Shao Nu' ('花樣少年少女'). Also, a series of drama CDs has been released in Japanese.

Plot and/or ending details

Ashiya is late on her very first day to Osaka Gakuen, running into Sano (unknown to her at first) and dropping her bag after freaking out (because Sano asked why her hands were so soft). Sano is able to return the bag to her during class however, since they end up being in the same class. His first impression of Mizuki was that she (he) was gay, because she said, "I like you. Let's be friends." Ashiya is also assigned to be Sano's roommate by pure fate. Although she previously believed that she might have time off in forging her masculinity, Mizuki must now keep her false persona about her all day, every day. She is however, overjoyed that she is now Sano's roommate and is determined to be his friend. It also happens fairly early in her time at Osaka high school that she is knocked unconscious and she is forced to include the school's doctor, Hokuto Umeda, in on the secret. Unbeknownst to either of them, the same incident that makes Mizuki tell Umeda also reveals her secret to Sano. Sano, however, keeps quiet so that Mizuki would not have to leave, and he could continue to have her by his side.

The story is usually filled with humor and situations that put all characters involved into uncomfortable places, or at least places they wouldn't have thought they would have entered on their own. Additional characters include Shuichi Nakatsu, a fellow student who is confused over his attraction to Mizuki which often drives the plot forward and Minami Nanba, the R.A. of the dorm to which Sano, Mizuki, and Nakatsu belong.

The gender-bending nature of this series gives for many amusing hi-jinx and a lot of laughter, but at the core, the series also has just the amount of drama and romance that makes it so appealing to the normal shoujo audience.

Important characters

Mizuki Ashiya (芦屋瑞希 Ashiya Mizuki) is the heroine in the shōjo manga Hana-Kimi (Hanazakari no Kimitachi e), by manga-ka Hisaya Nakajo.

Mizuki is Japanese-American and came to Japan to meet her idol, Sano Izumi. She also appears in the Hana-Kimi art books and drama CDs.

Main character of this manga. She pretends to be a boy in order to attend the school that Sano attends. She's very fast at running. Mizuki falls in love with Sano but is unable to tell him because she doesn't know that he knows she's a girl... until the very end of course...

While in Japan, she attends boys-only Osaka Gakuen, living in the same dorm room as Sano. There she meets Shuichi Nakatsu, a talented soccer player who becomes her friend and later falls in love with her feminine side but he doesn't know he is a girl so he thinks he is gay. Other friends of hers are Senri Nakao, a "cute" boy (bishounen) with a crush on the dorm leader, Minami Nanba, Sekime and Noe, two girl-obsessed, but good-hearted boys, Kayashima, a yoga-practicing boy with extra-sensory perception, and Hokuto Umeda, the homosexual school doctor who helps her out. He knows that Ashiya Mizuki is a girl but he helps her out on her love problems as well.

Even though Mizuki puts forth much effort to hide her female identity, Dr. Umeda and Sano separately discover her secret soon after she begins attending Osaka Gakuen. However, neither report her; Dr. Umeda judges her reasons as acceptable, and Sano conceals his knowledge for the sake of keeping Mizuki at the school. Although Nakatsu never gains the knowledge that Mizuki is female, he perceives her femininity and becomes attracted to her, thinking that he himself is gay.

Family and friends in America

Mizuki has a brother, Shizuki Ashiya, from her father's previous marriage. (Shizuki's mother died when he was young.) He is overprotective of her, trying to force her to come home when he discovers she attends an all-boys school.

Her best friend, Julia, comes to Japan for a time as an exchange student. Finding all is well with Mizuki and Sano, she comes back after her month-long exchange.

Gilbert is another one of her friends and is possibly her first crush. He's about three years older than her. She met him after running away from home after peer pressure, staying in his home for a time.

Izumi Sano (佐野泉 Sano Izumi) (Seiyu: Atsushi Kisaichi) - The guy that Mizuki Ashiya likes. He is an excellent high jumper. He finds out that Mizuki is a girl, but does not tell anyone else and actually becomes very protective of her secret. Before Mizuki went to Osaka Gakuen, Sano had been in an accident (he had tried to save his friend from getting hit by a car, injuring his leg), causing him to quit high jumping for a while because he thought that he couldn't handle the pressure. But thanks to Mizuki's deal with her brother (Sano had to jump while her brother was in Japan, or Mizuki would have to come home), he is able to try again, given a second chance to high jump. Sano falls in love with Mizuki, but cannot tell her because Mizuki thinks that if Sano found out her secret she would have to leave. He eventually is able to tell her and even proposes to her in the special chapter.

Shuichi Nakatsu (中津秀一 Nakatsu Shūichi) (Seiyu: Shotaro Morikubo) - He likes Mizuki, but doesn't know that she is really a girl, and some of his classmate believe that he is gay due to that fact. Nakatsu also seems to have come to terms with that fact. As Umeda says,"...he's only attracted to her feminine side," meaning that Nakatsu is responding as any teenage male would to being around a female, although it would appear he is a bit more excitable than his classmates as none of them seem to be affected by Mizuki-- or they simply hide it better. He entered the school with a football (soccer) scholarship, and is very good at it. Originally from Osaka(the city, which is different from the school and spelled with different kanji), he has a thick Kansai accent and uses the Kansai dialect a lot. He has bleached blonde hair.

Hokuto Umeda (梅田北斗 Umeda Hokuto) (Seiyu: Kazuya Ichijō) - The doctor at the school's nurse office. He knows that Mizuki is a girl, and gives her advice. Umeda is gay. He is the uncle of Minami Nanba and brother to both Io (Minami's mother) and Ryo. He is also in love with one of his old friends, another character from a different one of Hisaya Nakajo's stories. For some reason, Karasuma is very terrified of him, but he just explains that he "shut her up" since she was "all freaked out about something and wouldn't shut up" while he was in a bad mood. He has a tendency to kick people in the head.

Shin Sano (佐野森 Sano Shin) - Sano's younger brother. Also a high jumper. He hates Sano for leaving their family, but they are able to get onto friendly terms once again later in the story.

Minami Nanba (難波南 Nanba Minami) (Seiyu: Shinichiro Miki) - The R.A. of Sano and Mizuki's dorm. He's a nephew of Umeda-sensei, and is a year older that Mizuki. He's a "ladies man" although very sensible. He was once in love with his tutor, Kanako Tanabe, but she left him. Umeda claims that this was what caused Nanba to become the "ladies man" he is today.

In the future, it is said that he became a model. He, along with the other R.A.s finds out that Mizuki is a girl, but helps keep her secret (although it wasn't a secret for very long).

Senri Nakao (中央千里 Nakaō Senri) - A somewhat effeminate boy who seriously likes Nanba. He was upset for losing the beauty pageant because he helped Mizuki when she was kidnapped. At first, he was secretive about being in love with Nanba, but eventually he stops being to secretive. He'd even attack the girls that tried to flirt with Nanba, tackling them, glaring at them, etc.
